4 out of 5 stars A nice addition to any metal collection   August 24, 2006

I have to admit, when I first was introduced to ...And Oceans I wasn't impressed. I listened to their latest one (at the time) called Cypher. The track names were all weird (example: track one is called "Aphelion: Light Evanescence: Into Extinction") I listened through the album and heard mostly weird industrial avant-garde sort of stuff. It left me with one good song to add to my library and a sort of confused, dazed feeling. I stayed away from And Oceans for the longest time. Then, just recently, I read a review that sympathized with my own experience. This reviewer said something about their new stuff "Not being the same band as the older albums." I decided to give them a second try, and was very pleasantly surprised when I listened to The Dynamic Gallery of Thoughts. It was classic semi-melodic black metal (my favorite sub-genre)! After the first song I vowed to right a review recommending this product. But as I got into the album, I realized that many of the songs were just a tad repetitious, and perhaps a bit too black and not enough melodic. This is the reason is only gets four stars. However, it is still, as I said at the top, a nice addition to any metal collection, and would probably be appreciated by many black metal and regular metal fans. If you can stand the growling (and occasionally weird screeching) vocals, definitely at least look into this CD. Just be sure to stay away from their newer stuff.
