Amazon.com Blu Cantrell is tired. Tired of no-good, wrong-doin', sweet-talkin', always-cheatin', ever-schemin' men. Luckily for listeners, the Providence, Rhode Island native (discovered by Arista CEO Antonio "L.A." Reid) has decided to settle her scores in song. In the process, she delivers a gorgeously heartfelt soul album that manages to avoid no-scrubs, bills-bills-bills clichés, and get down to the business of broken-heart healing. Lacing scats into melismas and blues runs into R&B riffs, this torch-singing newcomer doesn't just take it to church with her debut: she takes it to the dimly lit juke joint, the crowded club, and the smoky underground cafe. Transitioning effortlessly from starry-eyed breathlessness to Eartha Kitt growl, to full-throttle, shiver-inducing wail, Cantrell incants catharsis with haunting ballads like "That One," in which she muses upon finding a soulmate, and "I'll Find a Way," on which she offers up a glorious, show-stopping vocal transition out of the song's bridge that would do Chaka Khan proud. Cantrell, the daughter of a jazz-singing mother, also manages to succeed with up-tempo numbers here--"Hit 'Em up Style (Oops)," the album's first single, is a jubilant revenge anthem, complete with an infectious, finger-wagging, Charleston riff that should have the ladies wiggling and their fellas checking themselves--and their wallets. --Sylvia W. BLU CANTRELL IS FIRST IN STYLE, GRACE AND FINESSE. September 23, 2001 11 out of 12 found this review helpful
Blu Cantrell has arrived with "So Blu" An album that has the jazzy, rhythm, blues style with a smokey jazz club written all over it.Blu's vocals are some of the finest in todays music market. It is so nice to see her first single "Hit Em Up Style (Oops!)" which is definitely beyond pop music norm is in the Billboard Top 10 on the Hot 100 Singles chart....How refreshing! A song with Oops! in it that has actually vocals, style and a refreshing jazz quality all its own. Blu Cantrell definitely has her own style, sound that I just can't eject from my CD player. A fantastic CD from beginning to end. Forget all the hoopla! about Alicia Keys who I feel is overrated. Get blue with Blu Cantrell and you will definitely won't be disappointed. All the songs are strong - my favorites include the first single, also "Swingin'", "Waste My Time" and "So Blu". The Ella of our generation has arrived!
Buy This CD... You won't be Blu July 31, 2001 10 out of 12 found this review helpful
Facts about me: I buy new CD's almost every week. I always give new artists a chance and I always know about up and coming artists before anyone else. Its a hobby, I love it. The first time I heard "Hit Em Up Style" back in April, i knew that the song was going to be a major hit. Now, a few months later, I am glad to see the album release of this beautiful young rising star. Not all the songs on this CD have that jazz fused with R&B sound, as a matter of fact, there is only two songs that are like that. But thats good, the CD shows diversity in the R&B genre. The ballads "I'll Find A Way" and "I Can't Believe" are awesome. Ms. Cantrell has an amazing and powerful voice that will keep you satisfied track after track. Producers include Dallas Austin, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, and Redzone. The CD also includes all the lyrics to every song and a biography of how Blu got started in the music industry. While there is nothing as stellar as "Hit Em Up Style" on this album, there are 13 great tracks. Definitely worth every penny I spent on it. I am going to see Blu Cantrell live on Aug 18th at a radio show... and I am definitely looking forward to it. What a talent! Don't pass it up!
Bitter Woman's Biography September 19, 2001 7 out of 15 found this review helpful
1. Blu needs to get some vocal training. She strains for too many notes out of her range which make her sound like a wet cat. 2. All of her songs are about some man doing her wrong, how she's been hurt, I'm getting revenge, I opened up my heart and you stomped on it, etc. It's all very depressing. 3. Most of the songs have the same beat, rhythm. I was very surprised that she could get 13 songs on that CD. 4. I think Blu could improve with some vocal training and some better material, but I assure you that anyone who gave this CD more than 2 stars is trying to convince themselves that they didn't waste their money. If you want a nice quality CD, get Alicia Keys. Seriously
So Blu? I think not...I'm glad I bought it! August 1, 2001 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
I must admit that when I first heard Blu Cantrell on the radio, I was not thrilled with the lyrics to the song, "Hit Em Up Style" yet the song intrigued me. Even more than her physical beauty, the beauty in her voice also compelled me to purchase this album. While many will say that Cantrell both physically and vocal bears strong resemblance to fellow r&b chanteuse Faith Evans, Cantrell's style is in actuality quite different. Other than on the first single, Blu shines in the slower and jazzier tunes on the album. Her mellow voice breathes fire into such songs as "I'll Find a Way", "All You Had to Say" and "So Blu." It also helps that she collaborated with producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis (of Janet Jackson fame), and Dallas Austin ( of TLC and Monica fame). Songs such as "Swingin'" and "10,000 Times" were better left off of the album. However, in spite of those additions, Cantrell delivered a solid debut effort.
Afterlistening you will be anything but so blu August 7, 2001 6 out of 8 found this review helpful
Blu Cantrell is probably one of the strongest voices to come out in a while. Her new single is still cleaning up on the charts and now we finally get to hear what else she was saving up to do. This cd is a mix of Hip-hop, R+B, Jazz, and some 50's type of jazz music. The best songs here are: waste my time, hit em up stylee, til im gone, swingin, 10, 000 times, when i needed you, and blu is a mood. The song "swingin" is probably the most creative song on the album. It has the same vibe as "oops" but uses a 50's type jazz background mixed with hip-hop to make somethign different to what you hear all the time. If she had more songs like this I think I would give her 5 stars but 4 is good for now. If your into hip-hop/r+b and like hearing good singing?, then this cd is for you. tight!
