In the '60s, the comedy The Princess Diaries might have starred Walt Disney favorite Hayley Mills, who often found her characters in similarly farfetched situations. Forty years on, it's a Disney flick, but with a few crucial updates. Among them is this soundtrack album, which collects non-threatening tracks aimed as much at prepubescent kids as teenagers. (When Melissa Lefton chirps, "I love life, life loves me / Everything in the world makes me happy," it's a moment as far from Cobain-style angst as any in post-"Smells Like Teen Spirit" pop.) Even the biggest names here (Backstreet Boys, Diaries costar Mandy Moore) clock in with music hardly as interesting as their genuinely sweet hits; almost everyone else supplies producer-driven filler that seems barely able to rouse even the sunniest child listener. The cheerleading of B*Witched's "Hold On" and Lil' J's cover of Salt 'n' Pepa's "Ain't Nuthin' but a She Thing" are nothing to complain about, but the disc seems designed to go in one ear and out the other. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars This Summers Hottest Soundtrack!   July 29, 2001

This is a great soundtrack! Theres only one song I don't like and that's because I'm not a rap fan! Most of the songs are pop and the album design is a bit girly (the back is pink), but the music is what counts. "Supergirl" by Krystal was a great pick for the films theme song. "Little Bitty Pretty One" by Aaron Carter is very catchy. "Miss You More" by BBMak is a great new song from the trio. "Crush" by 3G's and "What Makes You Different" by the Backstreet Boys are very good. "Stupid Cupid" by Mandy Moore was written specifically for her character to sing in the film and her voice is perfect. I loved all the songs except for "Ain't Nothing But A She Thing" because it's rap. But I have to say that the best song is by 15 year old Myra. It's called "Miracles Happen" and you'll be humming it all day! Buy this album today! If you don't like it, blame me!

5 out of 5 stars Princess Diaries Soundtrack Review   July 25, 2001

Because of limited space, I'll only review a few of the songs on the CD.

Track1) One of the newer artists on the CD, this song has almost a kinky feel to it. The rhythm of the guitar and the beat of the drum combined create a song that just makes you feel like dancing, but move in slow motion at the same time.

Track2) Although mostly `oooohs' and `oohaas,' it still has a catchy tune and is fun to listen to. This song is also a remake of the song played in Matilda.

Track3) One of my personal favorites, BBMak has once again successfully produced a wonderful mid tempo song about he wants her back. A typical theme, well sang, nonetheless.

Track5) One of the few songs of the Boys' where you can actually hear all of their voices. Being a previously unreleased song of theirs, it's nice being able to hear some of their other work.

Track9) With its fifties feel, upbeat tempo, and cute lyrics, this makes the whole CD worth your money. "Hey, hey, set me free! Stupid cupid, stop pickin' on me!"

Track10) After getting over the shock at much their voices have changed from their earlier recordings that so many people associate them to, I realized how talented they actually were. Now with their deep voices and advanced playing abilities this song is great addition the soundtrack.

5 out of 5 stars The Soundtrack of this Summer!   October 10, 2001

This soundtrack ROCKS! I have not seen the movie yet, but this soundtrack makes me wanna watch it when it is released in my country. Here's my verdict!

    1) SuperGirl (Krystal Harris)- 3/5 Average. A rock song to start the album. Sounds a bit like Mandy Moore.

    2) Little Bitty Pretty One (Aaron Carter) - 4/5. This cover song sounds funkier than Billy Gilman's song. Way to go Aaron!

    3) Miss U More (BBMak) - 5/5 Excellent. BBMak ROCKS in this song. Check this out! The lyrics are simple and sweet. Killer Harmonies indeed!

    4) Crush (3Gs) - 5/5 Sexy Cool. The female lead singer's voice is very smooth.

5 What Makes You Different (Makes You Beautiful) (Backstreet Boys) - 5/5 Top of the Pops. A new song from this fabulous band will melt your heart. Howie sings most of the lyrics here!

    6) Miracles Happen (Myra) - 5/5 Happy Song. A Newcomer at her best!

    7) Always Tomorrow (Nobody's Angel) - 5/5 Another Happy song. A cool tune to dance to!

    8) Away With Summer Days (Youngstown) - 5/5 Summer catch! Very LFO style!

    9) Stupid Cupid (Mandy Moore) - 5/5 Awesome. Mandy Moore sounds very cute in this song.

    10) Wake Up (Hanson) - 4/5 Rocks! Although I'm not a Hanson fan, this song catches my attention!

    11) Happy Go Lucky (Steps) - 5/5 An Anthem! I'm happy that a Steps song is found in this album. Steps is BIGGER and BETTER than before!

    12) I love Life (Melissa Lefton) - 5/5 Wow! I'm surprised that this is not the main theme of "Princess Diaries". Watch out Britney, Melissa is here to stay!

    13) Ain't Nuthin' But a She Thing (Lil'J featuring Angel and Tammy Phoenix) - 3/5 Average. A song to sing when you're feeling frustrated!

    14) Hold On (B'Witched) - 5/5 Uplifting. B'Witched gives me hope and happiness by telling me to hold on to life. There will always be a light at the end of every tunnel! I'm looking forward to a new B'Witched album!

    15) The Journey (Mpulz) - 5/5 Another uplifting song. Mpulz says "Spread your wings and fly! Gotta move on from what is breaking your heart. Don't let life pass you by..." This is very true!

Overall, this soundtrack is a cheerful album to grab and listen. The songs are uplifting and sweet! If you're feeling sad or sad, I recommend this album to you. The message of love, hope and strength is conveyed by the singers. You must buy this album if you're into happy music!

5 out of 5 stars Five Stars for Hanson   July 28, 2001

The only reason this Cd would get five stars is for Hanson's WAKE UP. Even if you are not a fan of hanson, listen to this song. It's wonderful. It makes the Cd worhwhile. Trust me. One listen and you will be a fan. Also, Krystal Harris is an amazing singer, so give Supergirl a chance, but the real shining star of the cd is Wake up. Listen, you won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic CD!   October 24, 2001

I bought this cd shortly after the movie came out, and it is great! Supergirl is such a unique song and is sung with an excellent voice. I love Miracles Happen, it includes a harp in the song and really is cheerful and happy! Stupid Cupid is a funny song, and Mandy Moore's voice is like an angel's! I love life is definantly one of the best! I love it! The lyrics are cool! Hold On by B*Witched is worth listening too. All in All- the cd is worth your money and is great!
