To all mindless reviewers and confused pagans... December 30, 2006 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
I was originally going to write an extensive review of the music, but after seeing the ineptitude that results from obvious Amazon searches, I lost all interest. Plus, those who would enjoy the band already know them. First of all, to the three complaining reviewers and anyone else who stumbles onto this page and gets excited over the use of the word, actually, you are the ones in the wrong--get a clue about etymology. "Wicca" in Old English referred to a sorceror/necromancer/male witch, far before the word was usurped by any religious groups or society. Early use of the term can be found in old texts of the Laws of Alfred/Aelfred. So please get back to watching "The Craft" again (as if you need anyone to press you to do so) and leave serious occult discussion to those without lobotomies. I will say that my (already low) opinions of pagan/nature-polytheism are totally justified if "followers" use the search engine of a commercial shopping site to fulfill their theological needs. Anyway, just a bit about the actual Mystifier double CD set. While it is their best material, Osmose unfortunately only repackaged it (as a digicase, ugh), and there are no bonuses, hence I remove a star. This is worth mentioning because both albums have been reissued as seperate CDs with bonus material of varying origins, both old and new. So the only appeal of this 2CD version is from the relative ease of obtaining it compared to other versions, or if extra material from the band is of no interest to you.
People, it is just an album title! March 18, 2006 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I laughed out looud when I saw three people in a row complain that this album has nothing to do with Wicca! Maybe that is because it is just an album title! Come on people. Do they complain that Darkthrone's "Goatlord" album isn't really the lord of goats? Or that Bathory's "Nordland" albums are not really the North land? And to the guy who said it is just pretentious goth music, you clearly have no concept of what early black metal music is all about. Want to know what I bet? I bet the people who complained that this has nothing to do with Wicca just typed "wicca" into the Amazon.com search line, and were willing to buy anything that came up, because they thought it would make them Wiccans. I don't know how they get off acting like elitists after that one! The holier-than-thou Wiccan who would buy anything labelled as "wicca"! You make me laugh out of spite! Now, onto the music. This is a very good example of the early Brazillian black metal scene, when it was still heavily influenced by death metal. I for one also see a strong Sarcofago influence on this album, which certainly is a good thing! The Goetia disc is the highlight of the album, and certainly overshadows the Wicca disc, in my opinion. It is slow, visceral, and absolutely oozing with a Satanic dark atmosphere. This album, musically speaking, is the definition of minimalism, which works exquisitely, I might add. The vocals on this disc are amazing, and unlike any other. The closest comparison would be to the vocallist for Sarcofago. He uses a very low, raspy growl, that is more spoken than anything else. It fits the music perfectly. Well, don't take my word for it- play the song samples! All in all, it is simply one of the darkest, most evil sounding releases I've ever heard. To sum up my review, this is a great album, the epitome of Brazillian blackened death metal. I recommend it to all fans of early black and death metal, like early Bathory, Sarcofago, and the like. The only downside to this album is that it is an extremely oddly shaped digipack, that really doesn't fit anywhere where a normal cd case would. A slight inconvenience that really cannot tarnish such a good album.
BRAZILIAN EVIL BRUTALITY September 12, 2001 6 out of 10 found this review helpful
This is an intelligent reissue by OSMOSE as both LP's became rarities on their original forms... So you are supposed to get this cd principally if you are a latecomer to black/death metal or if you are an afficcionate of brazilian metal. "Wicca" was originally released in 1991 (debut LP) and it is Mystifier's best work, simply terrifying with sinister vocals and great compositions! The intro/outro "OUR GLOAT" is unforgettable and the brutality of the coming tracks is simply unbelievable. Some of the precious black jewels presented are "OSCULUM OBSCENUM", "AN ELIZABETHAN DEVIL WORSHIPPER'S PRAYER BOOK" and "TORMENTUM ETERNUM". Man, this is one of the brazilian discs ever recorded on the black/death metal genre, although the original production was poor. It is interesting to note these guys come from the state of Bahia, northeast of Brazil (from where just a few good bands in this style raised). They will remember you of BLASPHEMY at the first view... Some tracks present slow-tempo passages that create an original and terrific atmosphere. The "Goetia" part of this cd (originalproduction = 1993), that was their second disc, is better produced and shows a faster style, but featuring keyboards passage that sound very well put and original - this Lp was originally produced in 1993. The re-recording of "An Elizabethan Devil..." is the best track at this work. Not as shocking as Wicca, but equally good. The cover featured at the reissue is Goetia's original. Despite the (satanic) lyrics with english errors and the brazilian accent, this is an essential classic from Brazil, don't loose it!!!
This has nothing to do with Wicca March 31, 2003 14 out of 23 found this review helpful
I don't understand how Wicca can even be in the title, this CD has nothing to do with Wicca.
Misleading Title vs. Content October 3, 2005 Greg T. Currie (London, Ontario) 5 out of 10 found this review helpful
This collection is completely mistitled for its content. Don't buy if you are looking for something Wiccan for your collection.
