They STILL want $14.98 for This CD?!? December 21, 2004 9 out of 25 found this review helpful
In 1983, I bought "Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables" on vinyl. Ground the grooves into dust with my record player needle, I listened to it so much.
In 1984, I bought "In God We Trust, Inc." and "Plastic Surgery Disasters." Wore them out, too.
In 1986, I bought "Frankenchrist." Listened to it about a dozen times; maybe 3 or 4 times since.
Then, in 1987, I bought "Bedtime for Democracy" on casette. Listened to it once. Have not heard it since.
Songs like "Moral Majority," "Kill the Poor" and "Well Paid Scientist," "I Am the Owl" -- though political -- were cool, because they were funny and had catchy tunes. But, "Frankenchrist" and "Bedtime for Democracy" just became Jello's long-harangue.
The more DK ran out of musical ideas, the preachier Jello Biafra became. Whine, whine, whine on his soapbox, about the Reagan administration, about poseurs taking over the "punk rock movement." Yawn!
"Bedtime for Democracy" is Jello's second spoken word album, the first being "Frankenchrist." His bandmates provided the background music to his diatribes, but the band broke up shortly thereafter.
Now that they've gone onto other things, Jello has the honesty to call his spoken word CDs by their proper name. And, I don't buy them either.
not the best, but still pretty good October 13, 2004 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
there have been some reviews that just bash this last album, however it's not that bad. obviously, compared with their previous albums, this final CD does not do the dead kennedys justice. however, it still flows very well and it's enjoyable. this cd has a whole different feel than their previous ones. but then again "fresh fruit" has a different feel as well. for the first time listener, this CD should not be the one you start with, if you want their hits get "give me convenience or give me death" but i'd say "plastic surgery" gives the overall mix of the dead kennedys even if it's not usually a fan's favorite album since it does not contain "california uber alles" nor "holiday in cambodia", but that's what makes it unique. all their cds are unique however.
in conclusion, this wasn't a bad last effort, there's better but this cd is still essential to the collector.
definitely recommended.
The absolute worst DK album February 7, 2001 7 out of 11 found this review helpful
I love the DKs - Fresh Fruit.., Convienience.., Plastic Surgery.., and In God we Trust Inc. are absolutely killer albums. Not just for their lyrical content but for the tunes. Although rightfully labelled a punk band, the DKs music are more similar to the Pixies and Nirvana than Crass or the Sex Pistols. All of their best tracks (Buzzbomb, California Uber Alles, Soup is Good Food, Trust Your Mechanic etc.) thunder along with deep rumbling basslines and technically great guitar work over Jello's offbeat lyrics. However, this albums is absolute s-h-i-t-e. I bought this album after buying all of their first albums (I'd been wary of the crappy black and white cartoon cover) and I was sickened by it's quality. When an album has this many short songs, you're almost guarenteed quantity over quality. The lyrics (and even the song names - Ticket to Neptune, Rambozo the Clown) are depressingly unimaginative compared to, say, their P.S.D. album. Fast, noisy dirges with Jello in ultra-boring-political mode make up this album (you could sorta see it on the horizon. Compare Fresh Fruit to FrankenChrist to illustrate my point). Buy all their early albums for good loud tuneful 'rock' (I guess) music that doesn't require dull lectures about politicians to get the message across. :|
Some of the greatest lyrics ever written August 1, 2004 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
This album is the pinnacle of the DKs creative expression. Tight, fast-paced performances are highlighted, and the lyrics on this disc put Jello Biafra among the elite of lyrical genius alongside the likes of Roger Waters, Jim Morrison, Bob Dylan, Frank Zappa, Ian Anderson, Neil Peart. This is the best example of what real hardcore punk is about. Buy it; you won't be sorry.
For TRUE Dead Kennedys fans March 8, 2006 5 out of 7 found this review helpful
Bed Time for Democracy is one of Dead kennedys best releases I mean in no way is this weak ,most who think so haven't read the lyrics or are too narrowminded for this. If you do not own this get it punk.
