| Editorial Reviews:
Amazon.com While the premise of Ben Stiller's Zoolander, a film about an intellectually challenged fashion model cum unwitting international assassin, sounds decidedly loopy, it's a movie with a smartly campy soundtrack to match, trading heavily on vintage '70s and '80s kitsch and covers. The Wiseguys' ubiquitous runway/car commercial/ballpark fave "Start the Commotion" kicks things into an infectious groove carried on by Frankie Goes to Hollywood's "Relax" (also covered flaccidly by Powerman 5000). But contemporary cuts (Orgy's "Faces," "Ruffneck" by the Freestylers, the Crystal Method's "Now Is the Time") take a back seat to modern covers that range from the sublime (Rufus Wainwright crooning a heartfelt take on the Hollies' "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother"; the Wallflowers' subdued reading of the Bee Gees' "I Started a Joke") to comparatively ridiculous (Nikka Costa and Gwen Stefani turning in pale impressions of Debbie Harry and Donna Summer on "Call Me" and "Love to Love You Baby," respectively). Herbie Hancock's "Rockit" and the ever-sly Moby's tasty sub-mix of Michael Jackson's hit "Beat It" also neatly bookend 15 years of club beats. -Jerry McCulley

pretty unsatisfying soundtrack save one man... October 2, 2001 7 out of 15 found this review helpful
Two words... Rufus Wainwright... Soundtracks (like Ben Siller/Will Farrell movies) are typically hit or miss, but when the divine Rufus Wainwright is thrown into the mix, it's always a hit.
An Upbeat Soundtrack November 5, 2002 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
An upbeat collection of music from the upbeat hilarious movie, where "up" and "beat" are equal partners. This is fluffy pop music with a strong rhythmic backbone, suitable as backdrop for action secquences and catwalk performances of your own. This music will make you want to strut your stuff, if nothing else. There are one or two quirky selections in the material that keep the album from devolving into dancemix monotony. But even those numbers that are danceable in a nouveau noir club kind of way have more soul and interest than your typical club mix. Most people will find no new material in this collection, but will greet each selection as a long lost (or even familiar) friend.
For most, worth it because of the wiseguys September 28, 2001 5 out of 9 found this review helpful
"start the commotion" the slowly rising in fame song that was first heard by most Americans on a car commercial, and on all Zoolander previews, will be enough of a reason for many people to buy this soundtrack. Some of the other songs are revivals, such as "wake me up before you go-go" and "beat it" which no one really can tell how they will float this time. The Wallflowers are always worth a listen, and this soundtrack could give a good introduction for many people to Powerman5000. Hope you enjoy it!
worth it for Rufus ... November 4, 2002 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I'd ever really appreciated the Hollies song "He Ain't Heavy...He's My Brother" until I heard Rufus Wainwright's version on this soundtrack. This single track is worth the price of CD, no question. Awesome voice, awesome conviction, awesome arrangement. It takes my breath away every time I hear it.
