Where Britney Spears's first two albums hewed to the early-'60s formula of one strong single plus a stack of filler--a fair bit of which ended up on the radio anyway--her third justifies itself as a full-length listen. Led by the single "I'm a Slave 4 U," a Neptunes-helmed piece of electrofunk that promises she'll do anything you want as long as it's dancing, the album continues through superior versions of Spears's poses. Calculated frustration with the adult world? Calculated independence? Sheer celebration? Check, check, and check: "Overprotected," "Let Me Be," and a cover of "I Love Rock & Roll" that brings to mind its bubblegum roots. Even without the joyous disco tribute of "Anticipating" and the not-icky ballad "I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman" providing symbolic respite from the rest of this machine-tooled music, Britney is one of the most human discs of the current teen-pop boom. If it spins off the deserved string of radio/video smashes, it may even buy this superstar a second 15 minutes. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars The Triumph of Ms. Spears   December 5, 2004
    Jayson Michaels
4 out of 4 found this review helpful

Say what you will about Britney- she can put out an entertaining pop CD. Her peers Christina Aguilera and Jessica Simpson are both better singers (especially Christina) but tend to make albums that aren't perfect. This album is perfect. Or as close as you can get to perfection in modern pop music.

This album is considered by many to be a new beginning for Britney. But that's not entirely true. Britney's fourth album "In the Zone" is really where she shifts direction. In this one, you can hear hints of the direction she will be going, but anyone who enjoyed her first two CDs will find nothing alienating on this one. Likewise, those hoping for a drastic departure will find nothing radically different on this one. But what does it matter when the music sounds this good?

Let me begin by saying there is nothing on this CD as immediately infectious and wonderful as "Oops...I Did It Again" or "...Baby, One More Time." But whereas her first two albums had some good songs, and some filler, this album is good from start to finish. "I'm A Slave 4 U" was the first single from this album and was produced by the Neptunes. At first, this song may not seem like it's Britney's style, which may be why people got the idea that Britney had made a transformation with this album. But after a few listens, it really grows on you. The second track, "Overprotected" was from her movie Crossroads. This is the Britney we remember from the first two albums, and you won't be able to get this one out of your head. "Lonely" could be a hit coming from most pop artists, but Britney had better material ahead on this album. "I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet A Woman" is another song everybody knows, fully worth listening to. Britney's vocals aren't always her strong spot on song's like this, but she pulls it off. "Boys" is another Neptunes produced track and is even better than the first one. "Anticipating" is a song Britney cowrote and a fine one. "I Love Rock and Roll" is another cover of a classic rock song from Britney. While I wish she would keep away from the classics, this isn't nearly as bad as her butchering of the Rolling Stone's classic "Satisfaction" on her last CD. In fact, while certainly not as good as the original, Britney's version of "I Love Rock and Roll" is still pretty catchy and fun. "Cinderella" is another song Britney cowrote with Max Martin, the mastermind behind many of her past hits. This is a definite winner, and one of my favorites on the album. I could go on to mention the remaining tracks and point out that I like them, but there's no point in citing each one specifically when that's about all I have to say for them.

All that matters is that this is a great pop album. You can easily listen to this in a sitting, and you don't get sick of it as quickly as you do with many of the other pop CDs on the market. It ranks with Christina Aguilera's "Stripped" as the best of the modern pop genre. If you are bothered by the fact that Britney can be trashy, try putting that aside and listening to this CD for what it is. Pop is only meant to make you want to dance, or sing along and this CD accomplishes it's only goal beautifully. Don't miss it.

5 out of 5 stars Her best work to date   January 10, 2004
4 out of 4 found this review helpful

When "I'm A Slave 4 U," the first single from BRITNEY, first started getting noticed, I was a bit surprised, didn't know what to think. I was so used to listening to all of the squeaky-clean dance-pop from BABY and OOPS! that "Slave" was a bit of a shock. I purchased the album soon after nevertheless, and I don't regret it. After giving "Slave" a few more spins, I came to the conclusion that it was, and remains, one of her best songs. First of all, there is something on this album that her previous two lacked -- lyrical intelligence and musical diversity. I'm one who appreciates when artists get involved with their songwriting and production, and Britney's not too shabby. She actually started singing about real life experiences instead of all the mushy, good-girl songs. She talks about sexuality ("Slave," "Boys"), not being permitted to be herself ("Overprotected," "Not A Girl," "Let Me Be," "What It's Like To Be Me"), breakup ("Lonely," "Cinderella"), the fun with being a woman ("Anticipating"), getting your groove on ("I Love Rock 'n' Roll"), and, for once, good love songs ("Bombastic Love," "That's Where You Take Me.") Highlights: "Slave," "Overprotected," "Not A Girl," "Anticipating," and "That's Where You Take Me." BABY and OOPS!, although very good albums in their own ways, definitely don't measure up to this fantastic album. This is a great way to start your Britney collection if you're a new fan. It's been my favorite CD since I bought it in 2001. And although I bought IN THE ZONE the day it came out and listen to it quite a bit, BRITNEY's still at the top of my list. Even after 2½ years it sounds refreshing and original - complete ear candy. Buy this CD!!

5 out of 5 stars Britney Spears is "Bombastic"   November 24, 2003
4 out of 4 found this review helpful

Britney is absolutly "bombastic." This is truley one of Britney's better albums, and all of the songs are wonderful to listen too. This is Britney's 1st album that doesn't depend on 2 or 3 singles, instead it is "complete." Since her previous releases, her voice has matured, but she still has that sound that made her a star. In my opinion, she has that kind of voice that's nice too listen to, because she doesn't belt out the notes, instead she sings her songs naturally and in a calming sort of way. My favourite songs on this album are "I'm Not A Girl, Not Yet A Woman", "Let Me Be","Bombastic Love",and "Boys". However, their all great songs.

If you love this album, than you should get Britney's latest release "In The Zone." It's even better then "Britney", and shows how much she has matured over the past year. Also, this album truley expresses Britney's talent to date, and what she is capable of doing, and in the end Britney always comes out on top, even if her records didn't sell the "expected amount."

4 out of 5 stars very much so a guilty pleasure, and a surprisingly good one.   November 5, 2003

I have to start off this review with a couple of disclaimers. First of all, I'm a big Britney fan, but I'm not an idiot. I know that her appeal lies almost entirely on her image and dancing, that her singing is barely up to par, and that her songwriting talent seems to be about nonexistent. Secondly, I'm far from the target market for this cd, being that I mostly listen to music like Radiohead, PJ Harvey, Ani Difranco, White Stripes, etc. I'm not coming into this review with no knowledge of what real music is and can be.

But who (besides thirteen year olds who don't know better) is calling this real music? The lipsynching scandal has died down, and it seems just about everyone (except maybe Britney herself, although I think she has a better idea than she lets on) is aware that Ms. Spears is far from a real musician. She's a performer, and at that she is very, very good. And Britney, though the least popular of her albums, is in my opinion the most solid one. It's like a crepe - light and fluffy with no substance, but surprisingly fun and yummy.

Above this, what's also interesting is the number of songs that revolve around finding oneself and being stronger than a man, and refusing to take crap from any of them. I'd almost be willing to argue that, at least in this aspect, Britney is a role model. For a little girl to pick up this CD and hear her talk about sex and wanting to be a slave 4 u [sic] - yes, that's bad. But innocence doesn't last long in today's society, even without the gyrations of Ms. Spears. And for the same girl to also hear a song like Lonely ('now this girl don't need no man / says what she can do or she can't / now I live for me') is very, very good.

And now, for the actual music. Unless you were struck deaf and blind in 2001, you certainly heard (or more likely saw, considering the state of MTV these days) I'm a Slave 4 U, probably more than you wanted to. But admit it. It's not that bad, and it's certainly better than the first single from her previous album (Oops I Did it Again for those of you who've managed to put it out of your head). The beat is sick, and it makes quite a statement on her frustration with being pinholed into the Sweet Virgin role that encompassed the beginning of her career. It's incredibly sexy, even if breathy panting is all she has to offer.

Overprotected is similarly catchy and also includes a statement to the world to 'say hello to the girl that I am.' It also holds some virulence against (in my opinion) all the critical press that surrounds her wherever she goes. It's easy to dog a celebrity, but it's damn near impossible to be one, especially at the age that Britney's spent in the spotlight. Is it so surprising that a college-age girl would want to experiment with drinking, smoking, and clubbing? Hardly - it's just some strange American expectation that celebrities have to be somehow superhuman.

The next song, Lonely, is just about the best track on the CD. All about standing up to a guy who's been a less than ideal boyfriend, the staggered beat and heavy bass makes it a pretty 'heavy' pop song. Naturally, it's followed by the weakest track, the saccharine I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman. In my opinion, it's a real stinker, but maybe if I was still an adolescent I'd feel differently.

Boys is decent, but aside from the merits of its best line ('boys, sometimes a girl just needs one') and the addition of Pharell (N.E.R.D. is amazing, you know) on the remix, it's pretty standard. Anticipating, on the other hand, is a standout track. Janet Jackson influenced, yes, but it's also uniquely Britney. A great song to start your night to, the jangly beat and use of xylophones really makes me want to dance.

I know I SHOULD hate the cover of Joan Jett and the Blackheart's I Love Rock and Roll, but I just CAN'T. Maybe it's the video, where Britney proves that, despite her lack of musical chops, she'd make a pretty damn good rockstar. Maybe it's the 'owww!' I'm not sure what it is. But it's definitely another example of why this CD is such a guilty pleasure.

Okay, so basing a song on a fairy tale is a little cheesy. Or a lot cheesy, take your pick. But Cinderella, while not the best track on the cd, isn't the worst either. It's the best when the chorus drops in. Next is another song (Let Me Be) about the enigma that is Britney, and how she's a lot tougher than you think she is. Her voice swings into her nasal register quite a bit here, but that just seems to be her style of singing.

Bombastic Love is the least feminist song on the album, so at least it's got some good music to distract you from Britney's grandiose declarations of love, made more pathetic by her realising 'when I wake up everything is still the same / and you don't even know my name.' That's Where You Take Me vies for a spot with I'm Not a Girl... as the worst song on this CD, so I don't listen to it. I advice you not to either.

But then the kicker, the grand finale of the album - a Justin Britney duet! Teenyboppers all over the world probably swooned at the mere dream of such a thing, and here it is (What It's Like to Be Me) in all its pseudo-beatbox glory. Justin's got a good voice, which helps add some clout to this song, and the fact that they broke up not too long after this was recorded makes it an even more interesting listen. Yeah, I'm a bit of a pop culture junkie, but beyond that I'd still recommend this album to just about anyone open-minded enough to indulge in some mindless pop once in a while.

2 out of 5 stars Britney Spears-...   June 30, 2002

Well what can I say. Many people either hate Britney Spears or
like her. In my opinion I liked her years ago but now I don't really care for her music. The music is catchy but the songs are the same. Its like listening to her whole album in one song. It is pretty annoying. But that is my opinion if your daughter or you enjoy Britney then hey buy the CD. I mean why me stop you. All I can say is please don't buy this CD if your child is under 10 years old b/c of the sexual content in the CD. I mean If you want your child to be hearing ima slave 4 you, dance up on me,hell, and swearing words then buy it lol. I just hope for better music in the future from Britney maybe a different beat.I know she can do better then this.
