    Editorial Reviews:

    Amazon.com
Where Britney Spears's first two albums hewed to the early-'60s formula of one strong single plus a stack of filler--a fair bit of which ended up on the radio anyway--her third justifies itself as a full-length listen. Led by the single "I'm a Slave 4 U," a Neptunes-helmed piece of electrofunk that promises she'll do anything you want as long as it's dancing, the album continues through superior versions of Spears's poses. Calculated frustration with the adult world? Calculated independence? Sheer celebration? Check, check, and check: "Overprotected," "Let Me Be," and a cover of "I Love Rock & Roll" that brings to mind its bubblegum roots. Even without the joyous disco tribute of "Anticipating" and the not-icky ballad "I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman" providing symbolic respite from the rest of this machine-tooled music, Britney is one of the most human discs of the current teen-pop boom. If it spins off the deserved string of radio/video smashes, it may even buy this superstar a second 15 minutes. --Rickey Wright

    4 out of 5 stars A Cool CD   February 14, 2002
41 out of 61 found this review helpful

    1. "I'm A Slave 4 U"- An awesome dance song! The lyrics are slightly odd, but it's still cool. 4.5/5

    2. "Overprotected"- A really cool song- one of the best on the album. A perfect song for anybody who feels like they're being treated like a child. 5/5

    3. "Lonely"- This song has a very cool beat to it. I think anybody can relate to this song (about a girl who's left her boyfriend and proclaiming she's fine without him because he wasted her time). 5/5

    4. "I'm Not A Girl, Not Yet A Woman"- A very pretty song with nice lyrics. 4.5/5

    5. "Boys"- I love this song's upbeat feel to it. Very nice! 5/5

    6. "Anticipating"- This song sounds out of place on this album. It's very "bubble-gum pop." This is the worse song on the CD. 2.5/5

    7. "I Love Rock 'n' Roll"- The opening part of this song rocks. The guitar used in it sounds great! 4.5/5

    8. "Cinderella"- This is another awesome song that I think anybody can relate to. For some reason, it feels to me like it has an 80s sound to it! 5/5

    9. "Let Me Be"- This is an ok song. Not one of my favorites, but not a bad song, either 4/5

    10. "Bombastic Love"- This has a weird title to it, but it's pretty cool! 4/5

    11. "That's Where You Take Me"- This has such a beautiful melody to it! A great love song. 5/5

    12. "What It's Like To Be Me"- A cool song and I'm sure some other singers feel this way, too! 4/5

Overall, "Britney" shows a more edgier Britney Spears, which is a good change! This CD is really cool and has some awesome songs on it.

1 out of 5 stars Carbon copies   November 9, 2001

Well, I have to compliment Britney on keeping up with her image. This CD is very sensual. Seems like all the songs involve her, a guy, & sex. And in all the songs, there's a standard beat, & some girls singing higher than Britney (who is singing low). Some of the songs borrow things from other artists & one of the songs Britney just re-did. There is nothing outstanding about the way this CD was done, and there is nothing stunning about her vocals. A good artist wouldn't have to promote themselves by wearing revealing clothes & dancing among writhing bodies. Sorry everyone.

2 out of 5 stars CONTRIVED AND GENERIC   November 16, 2001

~Britney Spears' third album "Britney" is supposed to be
the teen queen's "grown-up" effort-distancing herself from the
kiddie-friendly Max Martin crafted Swede-pop and delving into
better material and hotter topics. And although "Britney" is
crafted to be that,it's merely a misfire.
Shaped out to be Spears' version of Janet Jackson's "Control","Britney" finds Spears' singing sexy
    Prince-inspired jams like the Neptunes produced "I'm A Slave 4 U"
    With it's a~~ haughty,Vanity 6-like vibe,the track turns out to
be "Britney"'s one gem.The Neptunes' other track "Boys" is
faux-Janet funk.Max Martin chips in five sound-a-like songs
and Rodney Jerkins contributes a decent update of Joan Jett's
    1982 classic "I Love Rock N Roll".
All in all,Britney Spears is headed to Debbie Gibson/Tiffany
Ville.A place where manufactured teen stars spend the last days of their fallen carrers.~

1 out of 5 stars Negative stars. Good T/A bad everything else   November 10, 2001

If there was ever a pop marketer that relied on T/A this is it. At least Madonna has some substance and creativity. Without them this dud would be nothing.

1 out of 5 stars Britney? Disappointed.   November 18, 2001

I would like to say that it was a great CD, and I honestly do like Britney, but quite frankly she has changed her image too much - from the girl next door to the raunchy and (...) girl on the corner. Her songs on this album sound identical from one another. They have the same tunes, the same beats. It was extremely disappointing to me. I think the only good song is "Anticipating" and yet it isn't even that great. I was sitting and wondering to myself why people even like her.. but then again, I guess it's true: Sex sells.
