    Editorial Reviews:

    Amazon.com's Best of 2001
Unlike those other members of her family, Janet Jackson's albums are still worth waiting for. The best parts of All for You, her first disc since 1997's The Velvet Rope, continue to display the first-class pop-R&B talent who broke through decisively in the mid-'80s with "What Have You Done for Me Lately" and "Nasty." Jackson's longtime cohorts Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis are of course on board, and the production-writing trio demonstrates its mastery of everything from dirty funk ("You Ain't Right") to peppy, radio-perfect ("Come on Get Up" and 2000's No. 1 "Doesn't Really Matter") and hypnotically undulating sounds ("When We Oooo"). While much of All for You is irresistible, its handful of failures are poorly conceived and executed. Most glaring among these is "Son of a Gun (I Betcha Think This Song Is About You)," an unlistenable sequel to Rope's "Got 'Til It's Gone" that substitutes one self-regarding singer-songwriter diva (Carly Simon) for another (Joni Mitchell), thereby wrecking Simon's one golden moment, "You're So Vain." "Son of a Gun" and "Truth" apparently target estranged husband Rene Elizondo, but Jackson is hardly as convincing a revenge artist as she is a sex kitten. In fact, the likes of "Love Scene (Ooh Baby)" and "Would You Mind" out-spice even the carnally obsessed Velvet Rope and Janet. --Rickey Wright

2 out of 5 stars Since when did swearing become an artform on a Janet album?   April 29, 2001
26 out of 33 found this review helpful

I've been a fan of Janet's since "Control", and knew she reached her artistic peak with "The Velvet Rope". "All For You" on the other hand shows that she has reached an all time low with her music.

My main problem is with the cursing in her lyrics. I mean it's one thing if you do it in public, but her lyrics are meant to be personal when listening. I felt she was deliberatley trying to be shocking, and looked rather foolish. This should have been slapped with a "Parental Advisory Warning" since these days she is attracting a pre-teen audience.

Another problem with the album was Janet's "sex-kitten" obsession. It's getting repetitve and boring, she's been doing that for the last 3 albums for crying out loud. Even Madonna knew that it was time to move on after 93, and she's done much better since then. Tracks like "Would You Mind", "Love Scene (ooh baby)", and "When We Oooo" are just trashy lyrics that are just beneath her. It's one thing to write sensual, exotic lyrics, but lyrics that are on par with Lil' Kim are just not amusing.

My third problem with the album is that musically, it's boring. Her long-time producers have officially lost it with Janet. Most of the songs suffer from generic R&B that acts like TLC and Destiny's Child would sing to. Such examples are "All For You", "Someone to Call My Lover" (so TRL-oriented, it's sickening), "Feels So Right", and "Doesn't Really Matter".

There are only a few good tracks here. The electronic-orchestral "Trust a Try". The sensual Asian-themed "China Love". The lyrically-lovely ballad "Truth". And the disco, drum and bass mixed "Come On Get Up". The Carly Simon duet on "Son of a Gun" wasn't pleasing and was just riding on the coattails of the wonderful Joni Mitchell-inspired "Got Til It's Gone".

Other problems include the interludes (they aren't getting any better, though they were never good to begin with) and that album runs way too long at 73 minutes.

Seems like Janet is trying too hard these days to win our attention. So is this album "All For You"? If you happen to like all the things I just denouced, then I guess Janet was right in the album's name.

2 out of 5 stars OH JANET!...ALL FOR YOU IS "NOT" FOR ME!   April 26, 2001
22 out of 32 found this review helpful

I AM a Janet Jackson fan and have been so since her "Control" days back in 1986.

"All For You" her latest effort from Virgin is such a big disappointment.

First off the first single "All For You" is the teaser in the album, no other song sounds like the rest of this mish mash. The only other stand out songs are "Come On Get Up" and "Someone To Call My Lover" which is sampled from a 70s song which eludes me at the moment.

Another song "Son of A Gun" a duet with Carly Simon is a waste. Carly Simons vocals and the sampling of her song "You're So Vain" are absolutely wasted in over production and sound effects in this travesty.

The album is so over produced that Janets vocals are completely in the background over the bass, instruments and production.

The only fair to midland song is "When We OOOO" which is cute at best, but Janet has to resort to profanity in this album which I feel is unlike Janets personality and her past efforts. Does she think because she is pushing mid 30s that she has to shock us and the young crowd to sell records?

The album goes into slow dribble with "China Love", "Truth" and "Love Scene" and even gets slower with "Would You Mind", all these songs have no ummmpf!.

And to make things worse she puts in "Doesn't Really Matter" her #1 single from the Nutty Professor II soundtrack that we have already worn out.

Janet 4 years later and this is what you come out with!???? I didn't think you could do worse then "Velvet Rope" and you did.

I really tried to like this CD but this is NO "Control", "Janet" or "Rhythm Nation" or even "Velvet Rope" her weakest before this travesty.

A fan for 15 years and this is what I get....profanity, muddled up mess.

I give it (2) stars for the reason of the catchy single "All For You" and the danceable "Come On Get Up".

5 out of 5 stars Janet's Best and Most Personal Cd Yet !!!   May 10, 2001
17 out of 19 found this review helpful

I bought my favorite singer's new cd being a long-time fan of hers. My favorite cd of hers was tied between Rhythmn Nation and Janet and my least favorite was The Velevet Rope. But in my eyes she can do no wrong and with this cd she gives us everything we wanted and more. Her songs are great, catchy and extremely personal in some. The lyrics are often harsh, fresh and real - something none of the Jackson's seem to be able to give us. This cd seems to live up to its title - All For You - being exactly what long time Janet fans want: Great music and Personal lyrics. So, here is my opinion about each of the songs that appear on All For You:

#1. Intro - Just one of her many "Interesting" interludes

#2. You Ain't Right - I didn't like this song at all when I first heard it and it has grown on me ALOT. The chorus seems annoying the first few listens, but after a while it becomes a very fun song and a great start to an amazing album. 09/10

#3. All For You - I loved this song the first time I heard it and I still do. Its Janet at her best. Breezy, Catchy, Fun and very enjoyable. Very much like Escapade. Although, I like the Video Mix on her cd single better that plays like her video, this song is very cool. 10/10

    #4. 2WayForYou (interlude)

#5. Come On Get Up - This was instantly one of my favorite songs on the album. Very good and makes you wanna get up and dance. I hope this is one of her singles 'cause I would love to see a video for this. 10/10

#6. When We OOOO - This song is very trance-like and reminds me alot of That's The Way Love Goes. It's just sexy and sweet and very mellow. It's not mt favorite, but its good and catchy. I like the music that goes with it. 07/10

#7. China Love - I really did not like this song the first time I heard it. It starts out great and then I lost it. But now I have grown to like it. I really like Janet's voice on this. It's very sexy and sweet sounding. And I love the China sounding music that plays behind her voice. 07/10

#8. Love Scene (ooh baby) - I could do without this song. It's not bad, but it's very predictable and sounds like alot of her other songs. Rain plays in the background and if you remember Anytime, Anyplace then you already know this song. 05/10

#9. Would You Mind - Since this cd did not come with a warning label on it (which it should), I will warn you all that this song is VERY pornographic and is full of sounds, moans and language. However, it is a great song and very catchy. And the ending is funny. 08/10

    #10. LAME (interlude)

#11. Trust A Try - This Song ROCKS!!! This is my favorite song on the cd and I hope that there is a video for it. This song is very angry. Very Black Cat and it's lyrics express so many emotions. The music that goes with the song is AWESOME and I can see this being one of her bigger hits. If you want to know why you should buy this cd, this song is the reason why. 10/10

    #12. Clouds (interlude)

#13. Son Of A Gun (I Betcha Think This Song Is About You) - I thought this song was sooooo weird when I first heard it. Carly Simon's deep voice and Janet's sweet sounding voice make for a very odd pairing, but after getting use to it, it has become my one of my faves. It grows on you and the lyrics are extremely catchy and hard. I wouldn't wanna mess with Carly or Janet! And they have successfully sampled one of Carly's songs to give both of them a very original classic. 10/10

#14. Truth - This song is my second favorite on her cd. It is so personal and touching and her voice has never ever sounded so better and more soulful in her career. This song feels like a gift when you listen to it. Like you are getting into Janet's head and her heart. Songs this good is rare. 10/10

    #15. Theory (interlude)

#16. Someone To Call My Lover - This is another great song that would make a great video. An acoustic guitar and bass filled beats have never gone together so well before. This is another fun, care-free song that makes a great dance song and makes you wanna get up and dance. 09/10

#17. Feels So Right - This song is another I could live without. In fact, I don't even remember most of it, but since I am listening to the cd right now, I can honestly say that I could take it or leave it. It's fairly catchy and that's about it. 06/10

#18. Doesn't Really Matter - This song is one of my favorite songs she's EVER sung. It's so catchy and filled with funky beats that make you wanna do every thing you always wanna do when you think of Janet. If her career could be summed up in one song, this would be it. It's a classic and unlike All For You they have made this version into the video mix which makes it sound just like the video which makes it a hundred times more awesome. 10/10

#19. Better Days - A very good and uplifting song to end this cd. I have noticed that this is one of the only Janet Jackson cds that doesn't end with the sounds of rain. Instead, this cd ends with a beautiful symphony that plays out like the clouds are finally separating. That seems like an amazing triumph to me and can't wait to see what Janet does next. 09/10

    #20. OUTRO - Janet Being A Sweetheart.....

5 out of 5 stars All for You is Janet's Most Revealing Album Yet   April 24, 2001
14 out of 24 found this review helpful

I must say that as a devoted Janet Jackson fan, my icon never fails to impress. After coming from a painful and very publicized divorce, Janet has emerged with an extraordinary carefree album that rivals any of her previous works in scope. From its infectiously contagious title track to the heartfelt and personal testimonial "Truth" Janet takes us on a journey of former pain ("You Ain't Right"), a search for new love ("Someone to Call My Lover") and even gives us a glimpse of what's in store for her down the road ("Better Days").

All for You truly has something for everybody. Hardcore dance fans will love the multitudes of remixes waiting to be spun off while R&B/Soul enthusiasts will be satiated with some great grooves during the middle of the album. And even I love the rock-infused Trust a Try with its operatic intro.

It is clear that the Queen of Pop is firmly seated in her thrown at the prime of her reign. Expect this album to continue to break records and inspire a new wave of "Jan-atics" well through the competitive summer season.

2 out of 5 stars Not bad, but not her best...   April 24, 2001
10 out of 17 found this review helpful

I rushed out on my lunch break to buy this today... I could have waited. while not an entirely bad album, it falls a little short on the Janet legacy. All For You is a strong single, but the rest of the album tends to be a let down. I guess that is why she included Doesn't Really Matter. The 'in-between-song' snips are back again, which I find a treat. However Janet's "sampling" is not. Her voice tends to get lost in some of the strong beats, while other songs like Son Of A Gun are torture. Janet has been working with the same producers throughout her career & always says "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." Well Miss Jackson (if you're nasty) it may not be broken, but it is becoming a bit stale.
