    Editorial Reviews:

    Album Description
Band's 8th full-length studio album, produced by Cannibal Corpse and multi-platinum first time Corpse producer Neil Kernon (Queensryche, Nevermore, Skrew, Macabre & more) focusing on technically powerful guitars and unmatched bass & drum syncopation that will leave the current crop of corporate makeup metallers slack jawed. The CD cover will be masked for retail outlets as no 'censored' cover will be available domestically. NOTE - INITIAL PRESSING WILL INCLUDE A COVER OF METALLICA'S 'NO REMORSE', Identified By Factory Sticker. ONCE THEY ARE GONE, THIS REVERTS TO THE STANDARD RELEASE. METAL BLADE RECORDS. 2002.

5 out of 5 stars Scream Bloody Obsession   March 3, 2002

A new Cannibal Corpse album. What's new? Very little, and that's the way it should be.

You don't buy a Cannibal Corpse album expecting subtlety, innovation, and great musicianship. You buy Cannibal Corpse expecting bludgeoning death metal, blood thirsty lyrics and great musicianship. Corpse's riffs have become ever more complex over the years, and have continued to do so here. Hey, they ain't Meshuggah or Atheist, but there's a huge difference between what's on offer here and their debut "Eaten Back To Life". There are unexpected flourishes thrown in here and there, but the listenability remains. The solos are frenetic, as would be expected, but are perhaps a shade cleaner than in previous albums. The drumming is less straightforward than the earlier blast-blast-blast style, with a few odd rhythms thrown in. Never fear though, there are still still plenty of blast beats here!

Perhaps the best feature of this new album are George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher's vocals. They are actually clear enough for most of the lyrics to be understood without closely following the lyric sheet. Corpsegrinder is still bestial in his delivery, but now the murderous lyrical creations are given a fuller horrific scope. Corpsegrinder's style suits the band far better than his long departed predecessor. He has developed a two tone style, both gutteral, adding a touch more variation and venom to the overall sound.

"Hatchet To The Head" is bound to become a new moshpit favourite, with a shout along chorus in the vein of "Skull Full Of Maggots" and blast beats aplenty. "Dormant Bodies Bursting" sees the band cut back the speed a fraction on the chorus, to great effect. It's downright menacing! There are no dud tracks here at all.

The final act of this album is a surprising, but extremely well executed cover of Metallica's "No Remorse". To describe it as heavy is an understatement! A nice solo has been added at the beginning, and the rhythm and bass absolutely thunder along... This is really what this song SHOULD sound like!

Cannibal Corpse don't so much get in your face with this album, as leave you "Sanded Faceless".

3 out of 5 stars Wait... before you fly off the hinges, let me explain   March 27, 2002

I am a HUGE Cannibal Corpse fan, been with them since "Eaten Back to Life". Seen them live, both times with the original singer, Chris Barnes, at the helm, and they killed both times. I have all their CD's, a lot of their shirts and some posters.

"So why did he only give it three stars?", you ask? Mainly because the production on this CD is horrible. This is by far the worst produced Cannibal Corpse album yet, and I know it has something to do with Neil Kernon at the board. The mix on this album stinks, it's all guitar and vokills. The drums and bass are pretty much non-existant. Sure, you hear the snare drum just fine, but where is the crushing double kick drum of Paul? Where is the punishing punch of Alex's bass? It also sound like one guitar is louder than the other, and the solo's are also buried beneath the wall of guitar riffs.

As for the music, it has improved ten fold over the last few albums. I had a hard time getting into "Gallery..." or "Bloodthirst" since I could pop in "Vile" and not distinguish between them. This one however is quite a leap forward for the band. I like the fact that they "experimented" a little more on this album. I'm just having a hard time getting past the crummy production, that's all. I know you devoted Corpse fans will click on the "no" button, but I don't care, I have a right to express my opinion. Later.

5 out of 5 stars The best with CorpseGringer   February 27, 2002

I got this album when it was released. I have only heard of "Hatchet Unto The Head" on radio while I worked at Nightcrew... So it kinda inspired me of buying this album. The album "Gore Obsessed" is pretty much a "Bloodthirst" part 2 but a whole ALOT better in my opinion.
Musically Cannibal Corpse has managed to create one of the best riffs ever made (listen to "When Dead Replaces Life" and you'll know by what I mean). The production is very clean just like Bloodthirst. Lyrically, it hasn't changed much so don't expect any surprises. CorpseGrinder's vocals are more amazing than Bloodthirst. Cannibal Corpse remains Cannibal Corpse and this work is their 2nd best release overall (their 1st would be Butchered At Birth). Anyways best tracks in this album are "Pit Of Zombies", "Hatchet Unto The Head", "Hung And Bled" and "When Dead Replaces Life".
Buy it now, it can become the greatest release of 2002.

5 out of 5 stars Best Corpse album since The Bleeding!   March 13, 2002

This is the best Cannibal Corpse album with George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher and gives me hope that this band may still have a bright future. The best part about this album is the vocals. Corpsegrinder seems to have finally gotten it right and his vocals absolutely shred. The best song on this album is "When Death Replaces Life". The riff to that song is unbelievable and is one of the best Corpse songs of ALL TIME! If you thought Bloodthirst was boring be sure to check this out because Cannibal Corpse has improved big time. This surprises me because it is rare for a band that is 8+ albums into their career and they can still improve and put out high quality albums. Hail death metal!

Went to the local record store last Wednesday. Looked under the Mariah Carey section. Found this in its place. Put it in my CD player. I have never heard such disgusting, disgraceful, despicable garbage in my whole life. Once you have been exposed to this kind of filth, you have been contaminated for life. I may never be the same again.
