5 out of 5 stars Essential Listening From An Amazing Band   November 25, 2005
    Shogun (TheCityThatNeverSleeps, FL)
If someone were to ask me to describe the sound of this EP/CDM then I would have to say it's like a heavier version of "In Response". The band was definitely in a transitional state at this point, and you can really tell the experiments they are doing with their sound. However this experimentation is probably the most refreshing and successful the band has done to date. Mike Shaw and company turn out the most diverse recording TDF has ever produced with "Kairos", and it's easy to see why their following full length "In Response" was the amazing gem it was. "Kairos" is a good introduction to the band if you have never listened, and it's not that costly, so you are getting a great bargain for your money.

Opening up with the title track "Kairos", you will immediately get aquainted with what This Day Forward was going for on this EP. The brutal screams that Mike Shaw unleashes are now ballanced with plenty of melody and soft melodic interludes, making some amazing moments on the recording. While Shaw's melodies sounded better on "In Response" and his screams sounded better on "The Transient Effects Of Light On Water", no other recording can offer you the diversity this one does. Musically you can tell the band is in a transitive state, as the riffs are a lot less metallic and hardcore in nature than on previous releases, and are much more rock oriented with a focus on the mood and vibe. This really shows on tracks like "Isomorphism" and the album closer "Sunfalls And Watersets" (featuring Geoff of Thursday), which sees the band showing some of the most melodic aspects of their sound, along with their brutal guitar stuctures. There's still plenty of heavy jams on this EP though, like the aformentioned title track "Kairos", "Geocentric", and "Allegory To The Cave". Every single song on this Ep is great, and can be listened to over and over again. I really never get tired of hearing any of these songs.

If someone were looking for a heavier alternative to "In Response", but a more melodic offering than "The Transient Effects Of Light On Water", then this should be the first place you start. You can definitely tell the change the band was going through, but change is not always a bad thing, and in This Day Forward's case, it was an amazing evolution that still kept their core sound intact, while adding new elements to further their musicianship. "Kairos" is an essential piece of the band's catalogue, but then again every release by TDF is an essential piece of their catalogue. If you're into screamo or hardcore and you've never listened to This Day Forward, then do yourself a favor and pick up this EP, along with "In Response" and "The Transient Effects Of Light On Water", and be amazed at how you somehow seemed to have skipped this band for years in the past.

5 out of 5 stars Very Enjoyable.   April 8, 2002

Every single song on here is fabulous. Even though this EP is a little more rock-oriented than their previous releases, This Day Forward have created a memorable record that you'll be listening to non-stop after you get it. And even though there are only 5 songs on this disc, they never seem to get old no matter how many times in a row you hear them. The main gem on this would have to be the final track "Sunfalls and Watershine" featuring Geoff from Thursday. It is beautiful.
