Forget Destiny's Child; Mexican diva Thalia has a lock on independent-woman anthems. Her self-titled, eighth album (and fourth for EMI Latin) is ripe with girl-power ditties, from the ska-tinged "En la Fiesta Mando Y" to "A Quien le Importa," a devil-may-care ode to individuality. It's familiar ground for Thalia, who explored similar themes on 1997's Amor a la Mexicana and 1999's Arrasando. This new set is not as instantly addictive, but it showcases Thalia's continued evolution as an artist. "La Loca" is a smorgasbord of rock, cumbia, and rap rhythms, while the glittering "Vueltas en el Aire" is destined to fill dance floors. Mrs. Tommy Mottola also teams with the Kumbia Kings on "Tu y Yo" and enlists Marc Anthony as backup on "The Mexican." The inevitable crossover is also foreshadowed on the yearning ballad "Closer to You" and a cover of Dead or Alive's "You Spin Me 'Round," which finds Thalia purring like a sex kitten. If she keeps it up, we'll all soon be a slave for a new kind of diva. --Joey Guerra

    5 out of 5 stars Hot!   October 12, 2002

THALIA, Thalia's self-titled album is hot. A lot of people are complaining that this is too different for Thalia or whatever but I think this is her best yet. It's got a lot of well crafted pop songs on here. Up-beat gems like "tu y yo" and awesome ballads like "no me ensenaste" and "y seguir". Thalia sings with passion on each and every track. I really enjoyed this Cd fully. This is one of those albums that you can play from beginning to end, enjoying each track. Thalia also sings a few english tracks. "The Mexican 2002", "closer to you" and a remake of "you spin me 'round". "Closer to you" has a very nice melody but the lyrics are a joke. Still enjoyable though. THALIA is an excellent mix of pop/rock, dance, and latin sounds.

5 out of 5 stars Thalia's new album has a wonderful production   May 21, 2002

The new Thalia's album is full of surprises. Thalia come back with cool covers (Alaska y Dinarama in "¿A Quien Le Importa?", y Dead Or Alive in "Spin Me Round"), or else, she really came back to 80's with this album. The production got with the hitmaker Estéfano who wrote the most song of the album and co-produced with Julio Reyes. The american Cory Rooney who already worked with J.Lo and Marc Anthony helped Thalia in English songs. Steve Morales who worked with Christina Aguilera in her debut latin album "Mi Reflejo" produced the gorgeous song "Closer to you" that Thalia has presented in Rosie O'Donnel Show recently.
Thalia shows all her power in ths album, there's no many latin tracks, the album has more ballads with guitars sounds, is pretty cool!!!!! The best songs of the CD are: "Asi es el destino", "Y Seguir", "Closer to me", "No me ensenaste", "Heridas en el alma", y "En la fiesta mando yo", this last is much danceable. Buy this album now, it's incredible!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Her Best Album To Date!!!.....   May 24, 2002

Once again, mexican superstar Thalia comes "Arrasando" with a new album, new sound & new look. In my opinion i didn't think that this album would surpass her grammy-winning album 'Arrasando', but of course it did. On her self-titled album [Thalia], the singer shows her more mature and infectious voice. [Thalia] has a similarity to her first three albums but in a more better sound and vocals. Just by hearing these songs, you can right away notice the stronger vocals and great alternative tunes.
Leading the new set is the first single "Tu Y Yo", which also comes in a cumbia remix featuring A.B. Quintanilla and the Kumbia Kings, which should keep you dancing for a while. Other songs that will also have you dancing are, "En La Fiesta Mando Yo" (excellent song), "Vueltas En El Aire" (a good song with great vocals), "A Quien Le Importa?" (great song!!! really indentifies her), "The Mexican 2002" (w/Marc Anthony & also in an english version), and my favorite, "La Loca" ( a type of rap song). Thalia also included good (and way better) ballads like, "Asi Es El Destino", "No Me Ensenaste", and "Y Seguir". These songs are sure to become hits if they are released.
The album is definitely filled with many more surprises. And one of the surprises is three english songs including a cover of Dead Or Alive's, "You Spin Me 'Round (Like A Record)" and the tender ballad, "Closer To You". Even though we already got a preview of her english debut with "Its My Party" (Arrasando's english version), its still good te get some more. Overall this is Thalia's best album to date!!! I would recommend this to everyone, especially the fans. You will really enjoy it........

3 out of 5 stars 'Thalia' falls short on expectations   May 30, 2002

First of all, let me say that I am a fan of Thalia work. This includes her soap operas as well as her music. In my opinion, her best musical work is still "Arrasando." While I expected 'Thalia' to be as innovative as 'Paulina,' this was not the case. The first single 'Tu Y Yo' is somewhat of a remake of her earlier hit 'Pacto Entre Los Dos.' Like the rest of the album, the songs sound outdated. I will give props for the inclusion of the 'Tu Y Yo' Kumbia King remix. The remix is incredible and sure to be a dancefloor favorite. The same can be said for her remake of Dead or Alive's "You Spin Me Round." I am sure this has to do with DJ/Remixer/Producer superstar Hex Hector helming the production of this song. If the EMI marketing group knows what they are doing, they will promote this song to the US market. I understand that Hex has remixed "En La Fiesta Mando Yo." I am really looking forward to hearing that mix. To those thinking of buying it, buy it because it is Thalia. However, just becuase she worked with the same people that produced "Paulina," do not expect it to be anything as musically diverse or innovative as "Paulina." Thalia, I love you and I am looking forward to hearing the english cd. One advice--continue working with HEX.

    5 out of 5 stars A wonderfully Fun Album.   June 8, 2002

The Spanish language tracks are wonderfully fun, and light, and just make you wanna move. Thalia at her very best. The English language tracks fall just a shade shy of that mark, because she has not yet quite learned how to translate the delicious playful things she does with her voice in Spanish into English. When she does, Thalia will outshine all other cross over stars. Till then one can pray she continues to make such sparkling music.
5 stars for the spanish portion, 4 1/2 for the english.
