    Editorial Reviews:

    Amazon.com
Despite the piercings and spiky hairdos of Good Charlotte frontmen Joel and Benji Madden, the filth and the fury of punk are not in evidence on The Young and the Hopeless. Rather, Good Charlotte lean toward the sunny power pop favored by the lighter Huntingdon Beach, California, outfits. Nevertheless, with the title track and "The Anthem" ("I'm just a minor threat"), the band appeals directly to high-school outsiders. Relationship problems are delved into in "Wondering" and "Say Anything," and they even find space to explore comic horror with "My Bloody Valentine." So they're not as intense or enraged as the hardcore likes of Black Flag or even Linkin Park. But the undeniably strong melodies this bunch comes up with have plenty of appeal on their own terms. --Dominic Wills

    5 out of 5 stars a talented, mature, well-rounded record   October 12, 2002

Good Charlotte's 1998 release was pretty impressive. This CD, though, has quite obviously come a long way from there. To give you an idea, I'll break it down track by track and rate each song:

    1. A New Beggining - A short instrumental, it has no lyrics, so -0/0

    2. The Anthem - A powerful, pretty typical punk rock anthem about not conforming. Pretty good - 4/5

    3. Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous - The single that's getting the airplay. Pretty eclectic, well-produced - 5/5

    4. Wondering - A simple, cute song that Benji wrote about his dog, Ca$hdog. Fun, and really catchy chorus - 4/5

    5. The Story of My Old Man - Fast, fun song, about one of the band's favorite topics, their dad who left them - 5/5

    6. Girls & Boys - Probably my least favorite track. It's simple, but not outstanding, but still good - 3/5

    7. My Bloody Valentine - Despite its pretty graphic subject matter, it's really well done and sweet - 5/5

    8. Hold On - Definitely my favorite. Very gripping, touching, powerful ballad that EVERYONE can relate to - 5/5

    9. Riot Girl - Cute, fun, fast song dedicated to all the girls who love Good Charlotte - 4/5

    10. Say Anything - A semi-sad song that leaves you sympathizing with Joel the whole way through - 4/5

    11. The Day that I Die - Another song about death. What brings it down is the fact that it's so melancholy - 4/5

    12. The Young and the Hopeless - The title track, obviously. An honest and poignent declaration - 5/5

    13. Emotionless - The much more meaningful "Dad" song. Very sad, makes you very sympathetic but still rocks - 5/5

    14. Movin' On- A great way to end a great CD. Upbeat song about the future with positive vibes - 5/5

Overall, GC has come a very long, good way. You can tell how much they've been through on this CD, and it really makes you see just how much they've learned since the first CD and just how much they've grown musically. All their fans WON'T be disappointed!

1 out of 5 stars worst band in the entire universe in all its entirety   November 15, 2003

Since I'm the prime age group for Good Charlotte, or "GC" if you're a teeny bopper, I bought this album thanks to the encouragement of my friends. I am now beginning to recover after listening constantly to Greenday, Pennywise, The Suicide Machines, Rancid, the Ramones, and the one and only Sex Pistols. The teeny boppers who listen to this and think they are rebbels sadden me. Punk is about independent thought, and standing strong against the man. All the Good Charlotte fans are way too late to do this. They are just copying like they always do.

1 out of 5 stars as expected...   November 8, 2003

After listenning to the first 5 minutes of this album, it did not take long for the word "major label" to come to mind. Because that's what it's all about. I'm not a punk, I'm just a lover of many kinds of music (dominately indy and rock&roll), but to exploit what The Lower Class Brats, Cheap Sex, The UK Subs, ETC. has proudly kept to the devoted fans of the genre is somewhat irritating. However, I decided to keep listenning. I wasn't exactly amazed as so many kids were, I was more insulted really. How could this band rise above the other pop-punk bands and make it to the corporate media is beyond me. Maybe it's because 12-yearold girls find Benji cute. I didn't expect much better from MTV, so I'm glad I listenned with that in mind, or else I might have became angry. I don't hate Good Charlotte or anything, I just wouldn't prefer their music to a great extent. Please, for the fans of "music" who enjoy this (well, the kind of music fans that don't know music very well), please do me a favor and listen to The Smiths, The Shins, Autumn Defense, Bright Eyes, or Elliot Smith. Thank you.

1 out of 5 stars N'Sync pretending to play intruments   August 15, 2004

The title of this review pretty much sums up what this "band" (I use that term loosely) is, but I'll elaborate a bit to kill some time. Once upon a time the record execs at Sony saw other labels getting rich off of posers like Avril Lavigne who pretended to be rock. Sony wanted to a piece of the action so they searched far and wide for their own posers to get rich off of. What they found were 4 pretty boys in Washington D.C. known as Good Charlotte who they thought were perfect for the job. They spiked their hair, looked real good on camera, prenteded to care about everyone and, best of all, had none of the darker qualities which make up rock. Didn't matter that the singer sounded like a whiny, tonedeaf two year old or that no one knew how to play their instrument or that they lacked even an iota of credibility, they looked good and Sony knew that all the little rebel teenage girls (you know, those idiots you see everday who think dying their hair black makes them gothic or being a minute late to class makes them bad) would love them. Sony couldn't have been more right and in a year or two both Sony and Good Charlotte were rolling around in money harvested from the poor, depressed, jaded teenage girls who couldn't see that Good Charlotte's angst was contrived solely for the purpose of making their wallets a little lighter. That's the sad but true story of Good Charlotte who now sit in mansions for having no talent, sincerity, or integrity. Their only accomplishment was being in the right place at the right time when Sony made their big money grab with their N'Sync with guitars idea. I hate punk rock but that's not even the reason I'm reviewing this. It's about time people stopped buying every piece of trash big record companies throw at them. I know no one cares what I think and no one will listen to me, but it's about time someone stood up as a voice of dissent. F*ck Good Charlotte and all the other homogenized trash music out there. Century Media, Nuclear Blast, Season's of Mist, Candlelight, Metal Blade, Black Mark and other underground labels are the only place to find quality bands these days. I hope all the posers disappear soon and true talent is finally recognized. I know that will never happen, but it's a nice thought isn't it?

5 out of 5 stars Excellent cd, I loved every song.   December 30, 2002

Track 1, A New Beginning, no words, kinda creepy feel, pretty cool 4/5. Track 2, The Anthem, about sums up high school for me, and still my way of thinking, it rocks!! 5/5 Track 3, Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous, love it, almost tired of "it" and the video, it's still cool though. 5/5 Track 4, my fave off this cd, man's best friend very sweet, love the emotion in Joel's voice, excellent song. 5/5 Track 5, The Story of My Old Man, reminds me of "some" fathers I know (shame), rocks also. 5/5 Track 6, Girls & Boys, very poppy, catchy, and true, a decent song. 4/5 Track 7, My Bloody Valentine, very poetic and deep, love it. 5/5 Track 8, Hold On, very real and filled with emotion, If you prick us, do we not bleed ? 5/5 Track 9, Riot Girl, very upbeat and also I noticed a bit of a Rancid like feel to the song, in the middle repeating the "I knows", at least, "I" hear Rancid, it kicks. 5/5 Track 10, Say Anything, melodic, filled with emotion, and just plain killer. 5/5 Track 11, The Day That I Die, sort of similar to Social Distortions Ball and Chain, Benji's vocals are great here, punk/rockabilly and a pretty good tribute to SD, rock on GC!!! 5/5 Track 12, The Young and The Hopeless, what can I say, but awesome harmonizing, the very end of this song has to be the best Joel, Benji, harmonizing ever(?) my ears just heard beautiful. 5/5 Track 13, emotionless, the brothers went through a lot and made it through, this song shows that emotion, it's a killer.5/5 Track 14, Movin' On, more great harmonies in some parts, and the total punk angst, I feel it, nothing to prove and their movin' on, punk they are, and punk, they always will be. They may not be as hard as some of the punk bands out there, but Good Charlotte to me is definitely punk and I've "made comparisons" to two other bands, actually more like a tribute or a feel. I definitely feel they can rock alongside of the aforementioned groups I named earlier. This is my new favorite cd and I crank it up regularly, it rocks!!!
