rare good numetal July 17, 2004 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
downthesun is, of course, numetal, but they were one of the few numetal bands out there that actually sounded good. The Slipknot references are pathetic. Slipknot is rap, barks, and sloppy music put together to sound heavy.Medicated--starts with some creepy samples and quick attacks of the guitar leading into a fast screaming verse...chorus of the two vocalists screaming at each other..sounds very nice...general heaviness..the ending is pretty cool...repeated fast screaming of "its a wonderful life" then "get all strung out" and ends with quiet samples of drugtalk with a creepy sample of a woman laughing repeating over and over We All Die--slower screaming verse, fast scream/sing prechorus, and a very catchy singing chorus w/ the highpitched vocals going on in the background Enslaved--once again starts out with some cool electronics, fun verse, but the chorus just doesn't do anything for me...the low point of the CD for me Lucas Toole--a softer track, but it is very chilling..the screaming on this song is used very effectively and enhances the feeling...spinetingling Zero--electronic intro track for Pure American Filth...I usually don't skip over it because I like the slowdown before the assault of PAF Pure American Filth--like I just said this song is pure assault..really gets the blood flowing...for the first 2 minutes that is...after that it turns into more or less random screaming of obscenities and such...but the first 2 minutes are my favorite part of the CD Pitiful--the other singer sings on this one, and it really doesn't sound so great...but the background screaming is cool...after the first minute the song really picks up Scapegoat--another one starting out with electronics...the verse isn't innovative, but it is very fun to listen to...my favorite song as far as the electronics go Listen--this is another of the three softer songs, and my 2nd favorite behind lucas toole...the singing is beautiful and goes with the music nicely...song is relaxing and thoughtful Eye Confide--I didn't find this song really fantastic, but it is good...the ending is excellant Jars--starts out with creepy glass jar noises...then goes right into the song...this one really showcases the screaming abilities of the two vocalists...song ends with a really creepy repitition of the line "you're safe with me" being sung, said, whispered..and finally ends with a few last breaths Revelations--I'm not crazy about long instrumentals, but this is definitely the best one I've ever heard
wow...intense October 3, 2002 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
This cd packs punch and a half. This record rips your stomach out, chews it up and spits it right back in your face. "Medicated" grips you by your throat and doesn't let go unitl the end...leaving you struggling the whole time to get free because of how insane the song actually is. It must be the fact that they are from Iowa...If you have been waiting for a band that packs half of the rage and intensity as slipknot, here you go. "Pure American Filth" sums up downthesun in a nutshell with fast double kick and thrashing, down-tuned guitars. There are also two vocalists that create nice contrast towards each other. You will also find some melody in songs such as "listen" and "eye confide". My only complaints are that some of the song structures are similar. "Listen" and "Eye Confide" contain the same start soft and get louder towards the end formula...but if you truly can feel a band that is putting their heart and soul into an album, than you will enjoy downthesun...they are definitely worth picking up. They are an adrenaline shot...
wow... October 5, 2002 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
i downloaded Medicated cause my friend said he'd heard of downthesun but couldnt download any of their songs, and hadnt heard any of them...i heard it, thought "half decent, nice"...then a few days and a lot of persuading of my parents later... the phrase "auditory orgasms" comes to mind if you like nothingface or mudvayne...you better get this CD...i thought it might be a nonstop scream CD too...i thoroughly enjoy screaming, but it loses its punch if it just keeps coming...the interlude of ZERO before diving head first into PURE AMERICAN FILTH is perfect.... wonderfully violent music always makes my toes twitch.. this is a true toe twister i thought no one other than nothingface would ever come close to satisfying my need and craving for beautifully violent music... mudvayne is too...calm...for me most of the time slipknot has no talent for actually singing... spineshank cannot scream at all static-x doesnt even attempt to calm you down before their stormdownthesun...the one and only supplement for any nothingface fan stop reading and freaking buy it!
this is how it should be March 26, 2003 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Downthesun shows how real metal should be done. they are not a little boy band that knows how to strum a guitar and pluck a bass. three good, three evil to balance it all out to make one hell of album. if you wanna put a label on them, good luck cause it will take you the rest of your life to do it. the vocals are amazing, one singing about good the other singing about the negative side, the samples and keyboards are sick as well as the guitar, bass and drums.it's hard to explain it cause it is so original. Downthesun is Downthesun, nothing else like it, not a carbon copy, the real deal. pick this album up, once you get it in your head, you won't let it out or put it down.
Underrated nu-metal...3.5 stars February 19, 2005 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Okay...first of all, being a fan of a more "traditional" sound, sans rap verses, 3-chord playing, and repetitive verses, I was a little hesitant to pick this CD up. In addition, the very sight of a heavily tattooed and pierced man (Satone) writhing on a chair and simulating dry heaves (in the MEDICATED video) was too much of a put off for me. IMO, Satone is the ugliest man in metal :D. That aside, what we have here is perhaps one of the few nu-metal bands that actually possess some good talent in making music. Arguably, "LUCAS TOOLE" is the best nu-metal track I've ever heard. From its chilly intro and gothic vocal verses to its vicious chorus line well accentuated by Satone's barks, it's one creepy ride. The guitar playing is more or less standard nu-metal fare, but it's the creepy samples running through most songs that grab the listener's attention and create a cold and industrial-like vibe throughout the disc. Tracks worth notable mention include EYE CONFIDE, LISTEN, SCAPEGOAT, and PURE AMERICAN FILTH. Definitely worth a spin or two in your player.
