    5 out of 5 stars WOW, I can't believe I'm the first one!   September 17, 2002

Kelly Clarkson, the winner of American Idol 2002, sounds phenomenal on this CD single. I have been a fan of hers all summer, and couldn't wait to get this today. The songs are kinda low-bid love songs. Very generic, very wedding-appropriate (which is not necessarily a bad thing). But the fans of AI have been talking about how poor the songs are. All I have to say is this: They may be poorly written songs, but Kelly sings them really well. She sounds extraordinary; she makes you feel her joy when she sings. Her voice is powerful and strong to make you sit up and listen, but also soft and tender enough to put you at ease, to relax and enjoy.

But this CD. The songs as they are written are not the greatest. Diane Warren formula love songs. But Diane Warren has been mega-successful sticking to what she does best. And she has hit it again with these songs. Diane could not have asked for a better singer than Kelly to interpret these songs.

If you don't like sappy pop love songs, then this isn't the CD for you. But if you are an AI fan, or just enjoy excellent vocalists, pick this up. It's cheap, no big investment. Get your feet wet with Kelly. You won't be disappointed.

    5 out of 5 stars Stunning!   September 17, 2002

It is obvious why America chose Miss Kelly Clarkson as the first American Idol. Her stunning voice was the best of the competition and she puts it to use in her first 2 songs. A Moment Like This and Before Your Love. The songs are very sweet and to the point, but with Kellys vocals they become soaring powerhouse ballads. Her voice is so beautiful, natural, and effortless. We have not had such a lovely voice in music in quite a while and the songs here are a nice change of pace from the rap/hip-hop/rock music getting airplay. Hopefully her entire album will be just as wonderful, and hopefully the industry won't snub her come Grammy time just because she was the product of a television show. In my opinion Kelly should win Best Female Vocal Performance. A wonderful new talent that deserves all the success that comes her way.

    5 out of 5 stars FUH - NOMINAL!   September 22, 2002

Kelly Clarkson is an amazing talent. It really irritates me to hear people talking about her like she is just a product of television. This girl has a voice that rivals even Whitney and Mariah. I think it's great that she got this oppertunity, and got the exposure she might have had to work for years to get. America obviously knew she deserved it now. She can really belt 'em out. Both songs on this single are powerful ballads, which wouldn't have nearly the same impact if it wasn't for her strong and beautiful vocals. What I love about Kelly is that she can sing just as good live, if not better, then what's on this single. Most artists today, like Britney and Christina, can't sing nearly as good as what's on their albums, and lipsync most of the time. As Paula Abdul said, Kelly is the real deal. Even though she got her fame so fast, she certainly has the talent to back it up. She also seems like a very sweet and humble girl, who I think will always stay true to who she is, and not develop a 'diva' complex. I'm sure she's gonna have a long and happy career ahead of her.

3 out of 5 stars Talent wasted on poor songwriting   September 25, 2002

I just received this single yesterday (9/22/02). Kelly Clarkson is a wonderful singer, but she is brought down by cheesy songwriting. I don't think she does lovesongs very well. She shines in songs that she performed in the American Idol Series, such as RESPECT. The cheesy song 'moment like this' does not allow Kelly's awesome singing ability to come through. Now, if I could get a cd quality recording of all the songs she performed on her way to winning, I would buy that in a heartbeat.

    1 out of 5 stars A Star Isn't Born. It's Manufactured.   October 2, 2002

It's only appropriate that Kelly Clarkson, the winner of the mammothly popular "American Idol" TV show, is billed as the next Celine Dion. Like the Canadian vocalist, this 20-year-old Texan has respectable pipes, but there's something curiously Vegas-like about her. Maybe it's this song, which has a predictable melody and Hallmark-trite lyrics. Devoid of any craft or surprises, it shot right to No. 1 on the charts due to incredible first-week sales, showing once again the power of the hype machine. To paraphrase an old saying, "the devil finds work for 'Idol' hands."
