Amazon.com In 1999 the Donnas reached the age where they could Get Skintight. Then the racy foursome went on to Turn 21 in 2001. And for 2002, theirs is either an invitation or an offer to Spend the Night. And it'll be a whopper of a night. "It's on the Rocks" opens the evening on an anthemic note. The stoner paean "Pass It Around" appears just past midpoint, and "5 O'Clock in the Morning" closes the event. What's in between? Straight-ahead drumbeats, snarling guitars, and sassy vocals are the band's calling cards, and they're all very much in evidence here. Songs like "Take It Off" and "Please Don't Tease" are built upon bouncing melodies that are revved by choppy pop-punk guitar and simple rhymes ("tease" and "knees," for example). The Donnas' party--"Take Me to the Backseat" included--doesn't rage so much as it embraces a kind of postpunk free love that swaggers like the Ramones circa "Rockaway Beach." --Andrew Bartlett
Album Description This album finds the San Francisco-based quartet at their powerpop-rockin' best. Tracks like 'Take It Off' and 'Backseat' are all fit to burst with that patented Donnas attitude, loud guitars, punky hooks and irresistible energy. Atlantic. 2002.

Music good - Copy Protection ...! October 28, 2002 13 out of 24 found this review helpful
I pre-ordered this CD..., and when it arrived, it would not even PLAY in my Dell 8100 laptop with a CD/RW drive! Put it in, it spun around and around, but no music - nothing! Then I noticed the "Copy Protected" label in *teensy* letters on the back. This is a WARNING to anyone who wants to buy this cd - IT WILL NOT PLAY ON YOUR COMPUTER's CD/RW DRIVE! And since that's the only drive I've got in my laptop, this CD is useless to me. I listen to CD's on my laptop constantly. I'm now tempted to fire up Bearshare or Limewire just to get the .mp3 ripped tracks, since I already paid for this piece of crap CD. Don't get me wrong - the Donnas rock, and I love the music, except I couldn't even HEAR the music on this CD, even though I paid for it! I'm returning it immediately.... I recommend buying it from some source that will NOT force the CP (Copy Protection) ... on you. It's a waste of your money. Joe Griego Bishop, CA
Remember when rock was fun? May 5, 2003 10 out of 12 found this review helpful
A perfect rock album. Yep, these four girls, using the standard "bass, guitars, drums and vocals" rock instrumentation, singing simple, fresh, often naughty lyrics and slashing away with huge power chords and twisty solos...mostly at breakneck tempos...have crafted an outstanding rock album...rock with a capital "R", "A", "W" and "K". It's a fun listen. You'll smile while pumping your fist and flailing away on your air guitar. The single "Take It Off" gives you a good idea of the record...if you like it, you'll totally enjoy the rest of the album. But, there's hardly any tunes I skip now...it's maddeningly catchy. Check out these up and coming bands now...The Ataris, The Androids, The Exies...and The Donnas. All tuneful, driving, great rock...this is a great time to be listening to this type of music. Too bad radio/MTV hasn't picked up on all this good stuff. I've had enough of hip hop and rap metal...
Hey! It's A House Band Album! January 31, 2004 10 out of 17 found this review helpful
"Spend The Night" is the first disc I've ever owned by the Donnas. It's okay, but I feel as if I got caught up in the hype-machine over these ladies. The songs contained herein are all really catchy, stereotypical rock-poppers. I heard "Take It Off" live on television and I saw all of the kids in the crowd loving it so much that I just had to see what all the fuss was about. What I saw was a superb house band with average songs that you'll here in just about any bar or club that happens to be in the hippest part of town.Understand that I really enjoy this album when I want to get a quick pick-me-up or I'm getting ready to go out on the town. Other than that, this album isn't that memorable. There aren't any stand outs on the disc and, as stated before, the songs are average. If I saw the Donnas in person, I'm sure that I'd have a good time. But when the morning rolled around, I wouldn't be able to pinpoint any one good song because they all sort of sound alike. In closing, if you want some tunes that'll pump you up for a night at the club, listen to this disc. It's a fun album but I don't see it making any major impact on bands in the future.
The chicks that have the licks... March 1, 2003 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
Took a chance on The Donnas and DAMN, did I win big...these girls ROCK!!! They're not Metal or punk, but more straight hard rock, no-frills, upbeat and fast; the kind you'd wish more girls would play. After hearing ten million women sing sappy ballads of heartbreak, it's damned refreshing to hear a girl DEMAND "Take me to the backseat". I can't think of who to compare them to since most girl bands don't rock this hard...maybe if the Runaways and AC/DC collided in a car crash, the Donnas would emerge. There's no great instrumental prowess but there doesn't need to be any: three minutes, three chords, they're in, they're out, next please. The only semi-slow song on the CD is "Too bad about your girl", and that's not even that slow. One of the best things about The Donnas is they actually CELEBRATE casual sex/getting laid (at least according to their lyrics) instead of crying over it like Britney or her ilk...If you don't "Take it off" fast enough they'd probably break a bottle over your head, and "Pass it around" might just as well mean a guy's johnson as well as a drink. Can't wait to see them on tour...
Move Over Joan Jett....The Donnas Are Here! November 16, 2002 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
The Donnas have abandon the punk-rock sound of there first few albums and have strayed into "Riot Girl", Hard Rock Territory. Where the Donnas could often be descirbed as a female Ramones, the new album blends the sounds of a harder rocking Joan Jett, with Kiss & AC/DC. If anyone out there has ever heard of the great Australian band, Angel City...this album sounds alot like there harder rocking music. Of course the Ramones/Punk influences are still here, but mainly in the lyrical content and song structure. The sound is pure, straight ahead rock. The only fault I see here is some of the ruff edges have been smoothed over production wise and the guitar riffs/solos seem to be less frequent. The vocals also seem to be more studio "enhanced" than before. Regardless in the age of Pink, Spears, and Christina...its great to see some of my teenage heros of the 70's and 80's have rubbed off on the newer generation. Actually minus Ace Frehley, this is the best album KISS never did!!
