It's hard to say what adds more ballast to singer Kelly Rowland's solo debut, Simply Deep--her chart-topping past with Destiny's Child or her insanely sexy duet (and accompanying video) with hip-hop star Nelly on the song "Dilemma." For certain, Rowland will take her place alongside fellow Destiny's Child member Beyonce Knowles as a hip, self-assured R&B force with a terrifically elastic voice, if not groundbreaking material. A slick, mostly upbeat clutch of smoochy urban ballads and he-done-me-wrong laments, Simply Deep sounds expensive and Cristal-soaked, which was doubtless the goal. And there are notable exceptions--"Love/Hate" is a electronically juiced rump-shaker while the poignant album opener, "Stole," stands as a beacon to the underdog, delivered in a voice as striking as the face it belongs to, which is saying something. --Kim Hughes

I love this CD, it's songs are beautiful I think this is the best solo album yet!

    2. Dilemma w/ Nelly - Awesome song, hot beat, hot chorus, hot lyrics! But they play it on the radio too much so I'm kinda sick of it. 5/5 STARS

    3. Haven't Told You - This is a hot song!. Good job Kelly.
    4/5 STARS

    14. Make U Wanna Stay w/ Joe Budden - I don't like this song at all. The beat is hot and the lyrics are hot but the way Kelly sings the chorus is so phony if she sang it different and got rid of the rapper it would be a hot song. Worst song on CD. 2/5

4 out of 5 stars Not a really good solo debut album......   October 22, 2002
15 out of 21 found this review helpful

3 1/2 stars...... This is the solo album from Kelly Rowland of Destiny's Child. Although not a good Destiny's Child type album, it is a album containing mostly R&B and a couple of hip hop track.

The album start off with the first single STOLE - A good song which kelly really show how great her vocal is, it also has a great music with some guitar as background. 10/10

DILEMMA FEATURING NELLY - All of us had heard this song from Nelly's NELLYVILLE. The song seem to be slighly overplayed on the radio now but its quite good actually. 10/10

HAVEN'T TOLD YOU - A mellow song from kelly that is usually sang by Beyonce in Destiny's Child. Kelly finally get her chance in her solo album. A great song again. Kinda sounds like EMOTION from SURVIVOR but w/o Beyonce. 10/10

CAN'T NOBODY - This is the song that makes the album go bad. the song has a hip hop beat and Kelly is trying to match her vocal with the beat. I usually skip this. 5/10

SIMPLY DEEP FEATURING SOLANGE KNOWLES - This is the album title track featuring Beyonce's sister Solange. This is another song that i will skip. Both Kelly and Solange vocal is weak in here. not a really good album track. 6/10

(LOVE LIES IN) STRANGE PLACES - This is a song that make the album good again. It is a good R&B track that Kelly is best in. Her vocal is meant for this type of music. One of my FAVS. 10/10

OBSESSION - After a good song..... The album goes bad again. plain and boring song... Considered is filter. 4/10

HEAVEN - This song sounds like a gospel track. Kinda an average song, Not as good as others but its okay... Kinda average in fact. 7/10

PAST 12 - This is the best song from the album. Sounds like a typical Janet Jackson songs. The music is great and so catchy. a very good R&B song that Destiny's Child has never done before. Hope that this will be the next single. This song is wonderful, my no.1 favs on the album. 10/10

EVERYTIME YOU WALK OUT THAT DOOR - A ballad that is soft, plain and simply perfect for kelly. A R&B song that is a must listen. Just simply nice. 10/10

This is a album for true Destiny's Child or Kelly fans. If you are just a R&B lover, this album is not for you. Kelly has a really good vocal but it's not fully shown in her solo album. In Destiny's Child, Beyonce usually lead the band and Kelly tend to be missed out. This album really let more people know how good/bad Kelly's vocal is.

    5 out of 5 stars Kelly's 'Simply Deep' Destiny   November 7, 2002
12 out of 14 found this review helpful

Everyone figured Beyonce Knowles to breakout and be the first chart topping member of R&B super-group Destiny's Child, but unassuming Kelly proved the band's diva wrong. Kelly's duet with rapper Nelly soared to the top of the charts, while Beyonce, and her first solo effort failed to make even the tiniest of tiny dents. Now Kelly is up with her own solo track, in the powerful "Stole", and it is following the Nelly duet "Dilemma" to the very top.
The rest of the album is just as strong as these first two singles. It's very laid back, very smooth, on many of the tracks. The best of Kelly's chilled out cuts include "Simply Deep" with Solange, "(Love Lives In) Strange Places", and "Train On A Track". Not all the tracks are mellow, some do drive hard. Those are some of her best tracks, the hip-hop number "I'm Gonna Make U Stay" featuring Joe Budden, the rocky and passionate "Love/Hate", and the excellent "Can't Nobody" and "Past 12". Kelly really can pull it out solo.
An excellent album, a great effort in pop and R&B, a wicked debut release for Ms. Rowland. I wonder if Beyonce's work will even come CLOSE. Great!

4 out of 5 stars Beyonce who..???   November 4, 2002
11 out of 12 found this review helpful

That's what you'll be sayin once you've heard this cd.Miss Kelly does all right on her own and I like her voice wayyyy better than awful Michelle's. We'll have to wait for Beyonce's solo debut before we can make comparisons but here's a review of the songs real quick:

    1. Stole- Probably my favorite song on the cd. Meaningful lyrics kind of sad but not boring!!! Its about school shootings. (2nd single)
    2. Dilemna- We've all heard this. Nice song, wayyy overplayed, but still nice although I don't really consider it Kelly's song.About a guy and a girl who like each other but the girl's already in a relationship. (1st single)
    3. Havent Told You- I like this too. Its a nice little slow love song. I like the beat. Could be a single but I think only some ppl would like this song.
    4. Can't Nobody- this is ok. I dont love it but i dont hate it. I usually skip over this.
    5. Love/Hate- I like this. It has a little Janet Jackson vibe in the beginning.
    6. Simply Deep- simply sweet. I like this one too but it had to grow on me.
    7. (Loves Lives in) Strange Places- I like this song a lot!!! Cool beat!! Possible single.
    8. Obsession- Ughh Dont like this song. Pass please.
    9. Heaven- sounds interesting in the beginning but then gets boring. Its no slice of heaven that's for sure. (Sorry for the bad joke)
    10. Past 12- I love this song!!! I hope its a single. Sounds like something Destiny's Child would sing. Upbeat song!!!
    11. Everytime You Walk Out That Door- I like this too. The chorus is nice.
    12. Train On A Track- I love this song!!! The lyrics, the beat, everything!!!! Hope its a single!!!!
    13. Beyond Imagination- More like beyond boring. This one's a sleeper.
    14. Make you wanna stay- I absolutely hate this song!!! The rapper Joe Budden annoys me.

Overall worth the money. Here's my top 5:
    1. Stole
    2. Past 12
    3. Train On a Track
    4. Love Lives In Strange places
    5. Everytime you walk out that door

    5 out of 5 stars Simply Kelly !   October 23, 2002

I can't believe I can honestly say that I love this album. When I heard she was coming out with a solo record I had my doubts. She seems like the weak one out of the DC3 click which I am personally not a fan of. She shines over them all on this album though some of the songs sound just like DC3 is performing them which makes me see that Beyonce' does not have that great of a voice because Kelly's tone can outshine her anyday. Anyways Simply Deep is nice though I think the title track could have been left off the album... I couldn't tell whether it's Solange or Kelly Singing it doesn't matter anyway. Well hears my run down.
    1. Stole- is nice it has a catchy hook but I hate the reference to Kobe Bryant...maybe she should change it to MJ or Vince Carter somebody, anybody but Kobe. It gets 4 stars.
    2. Dilemma-What else can I say everyone else likes it so I guess I do too. I think that I am going to like it a lot more once they stop playing it so much. 5 stars
    3. Haven't Told you - I like it it nice not radio material but nice. 3and a half stars
    4. Can't nobody - This song with the Bonus track Make you wanna stay is worth the album alone. This song is one of the best songs on the album.. I just can't stop playing it.It's addictive. 6 stars out of 5 stars
    5. Love/Hate - Nice beat...nice words...the hook could be better it's something missing. But I like this song a lot. This is another one of the good ones. 4 and half stars minus half for that hook
    6. Simply Deep - I don't like this but I think I might listen too it when I am really really depressed. The words aren't bad it could be worse but it's so what's the word special that's it. 2 and a half stars
    7. Stranges Places - This is another song that tells stories .. she likes telling stories. But I like it the lyrics are different. 4 stars
    8. Obession - This one is different don't know how to describe it just different. I guess it 's because she is letting her little sister write her songs she did this one and #6 and "13 which i actually like. I would have to say that she didn't do bad...not great but not bad at all. 3 stars
9.Heaven - Another slow song. It has and old school rythym to it. It's would be good to play when you're getting cozy. 4 stars
    10. Past twelve - i like this song...nice beat...it sounds like something Rodney Jerkins would do.. it's smooth and it's less serious than some of the other songs on the album. 4 stars
    11. Everytime You walk Out the Door - Another slow song...nice ..This is a come back to me baby song. like it though 4 stars
    12. Train On a Track - I love her voice so much that I didn't know whether I liked this song or not. Because her voice is so great on this so i guess i like it then 3 3/4 stars
    13. Beyond Imagination - I Love songs with a violin in the background.. i like this ...words are real serious just like most of the album. On this it seems like she has some aggression to get out. First time on the album that she uses her vocal power... 5 stars
    14. Make you Wanna Stay (Bonus) - I love this song....This is the bomb I am serious. This rapper is new I think but they click..just like with Nelly. Love this hook ..I love this song did I mention that...This song is the bomb. Go kelly Go! This should be the second single it would shock the hell out of them. Just Raw 6 stars out of 5 stars

I truly believe this album is more than worth the price. It is really good and it shows that this girl can really sing. First of all she didn't have lots of major producers like Justin and Beyonce most likely will but this album it's her own. Though at times it sounds like DC3 style it clearly is unique. So i think you should rename your album Kelly if you're reading this and take off that track # 6 and name it Simply Kelly because that is what it simply is Kelly!
