It's anyone's guess as to whether record-company wisdom or Shakira's vow to stay true to her roots prompted the Colombian singer to make her first hits package 100 percent en espanol. You won't find any of her English hits here--just the best Spanish-language tracks from her four solo albums. (The cover art even features an older, pre-crossover photo of Shakira sporting darker red and black hair.) This is simply Shakira at her best, from heartfelt early ditties "Estoy Aqui" and "Donde Estas Corazon" to rockier-edged gems from her best album, 1998's Donde Estan los Ladrones?. Keepers include the schizophrenic "Ciega, Sordomuda," the aching ballad "Inevitable," and "Ojos Asi," a pulsing club thumper highlighted by Asian and Middle Eastern flourishes. Grandes Exitos also includes more recent hits "Suerte" and "Te Aviso, Te Anuncio (Tango)," which rank with her best compositions. --Joey Guerra

3 out of 5 stars Excellent songs but this is no Greatest hits   November 26, 2002

I agree 100% with the reviewe who said that this was more designed for a pop-market and it isn't Shakira's true Greatest Hits. Sure, every track here is excellent and I love them all but some of Shaki's best are absent for no reason!
I don't really understand why "Si Te Vas" was chosen to be on the album yet the amazing "Se Quiere Se Mata" is nowhere to be found! Not only that but there isn't anything from Shakira's best album "Mtv Unplugged"!. It's such a shame 'cos it's very obvious that Shakira didn't choose these songs herself as they are definitely not all her best hits!
I can't believe that "Moscas En La Casa" and "Antologia" have been put on the same album as they sound very similar. They only work well on seperate albums.
So overall, it's a disappointing "Grandes Exitos" and I feel that Shakira needs to wait for a few more years (and albums) before she considers making a better one.
(And one last thing, when are we going to hear Shakira's first two albums "Magia" and "Peligro"??)

3 out of 5 stars Record company wants your money   January 1, 2003

Maybe I've been spoiled by the likes of U2, who are always trying to give something new to their audience -even if they're releasing just a Greatest Hits album.

Don't get me wrong, I've known and loved Shakira since 1995 and I have supported her English crossover. But this is A PRODUCT, I really don't think she was even involved... there are NO new tracks, and not all of her SINGLES have been included. At least in Mexico, "Moscas en la casa" was never released. Instead I'd include "Pies descalzos, suenos blancos".

The songs are great, but the album doesn't offer us anything new except for the VCD, which doesn't include any full lenght videos. This CD screams "buy, buy, buy!" even if nothing special has been offered.

1 out of 5 stars Shakira, vas de mal en peor.   March 11, 2003

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Brilliant   November 8, 2002

I first discovered Shakira on a visit to Chile in 1999. I heard the song Ojos Asi on the radio and became hooked. Shakira is so much more than just a pop singer - she is the voice of a people, a nation, a youth. She sings about her love, her heritage, her country. She is the perfect role model for young people and I admire her so very much.
This CD is the perfect mix of Shakira's music, ranging from songs from Pies Descalzos, Donde Estan los Ladrones?, and of course, Servicio de Lavanderia (Laudry Service).
All songs on this album are, of course, incredible. My favourites however have to be Ojos Asi, Tu, Ciega Sordomuda and Suerte.
This is a must for all Shakira fans. And for those of you who are still deliberating as to whether or not to purchase Laundry Service, I highly recommend that you purchase Grandes Exitos - it is classic Shakira.
As Shakira embarks on her world tour, the world will now really realise what an amazing woman she is.
    Te quiero Shakira.

3 out of 5 stars Greatest Hits OR Best Of? Neither   November 21, 2002

The review which you are about to read is written from a Shakira follower, someone who continues to support her, although dissapointed in her recent work. This so called "grandes exitos" collection includes some of Shakira's best Spanish songs, it really does try. Although there are really, no filler material here..all the songs included are great...it makes u wonder on certain songs that they chose to exclude to give preference to songs not in the same league. and what saddens me is that she obviously gave more preference to her recent material, rather than the amazing 1996 album "Pies Descalzos"

a perfect example...where in the world is the rocking mega-hit "Pies Descalzos, Suenos Blancos"? Where is "Se Quiere, Se Mata"? There songs are two of her most rockin' songs, all I can think and feel is that Sony is trying to establish this CD for the poppy market, where the current Shakira of today is aiming for, instead of truly establishing a compilation of what Shakira truly is (or was).

For those reasons alone, and due to the fact "Te Dejo Madrid", probably her most popular Spanish song of the last year,is absent, I give this album 3 stars..It truly is worth it if u want a taste of the easily-swallowable side of Shak, but I highly recommend you buy her first album "Pies Descalzos" if you truly want to feel her soul.
