Album Description Superb Finnish goth rock, in the vein of Sentenced and HIM. Powerful, yet melancholic. Heavy, catchy and somber. Debuted at #3 on Finnish album charts. 11 tracks. Spinefarm.

Good, but Not Great February 26, 2008 Been a big fan of Goth Rock since the mid '90s and the Swedish band "Misery Loves Co.," and Portugal's "Moonspell." Charon, for those of you who are completely unfamiliar, is much more in the vein of H.I.M. Now, before anyone flames this review, I will state now that for an album to be "great" it must be able to do its style of music in some truly NEW way, or redefine the genre. Charon is a welcome addition to this genre though it must be said that this and all other of their albums are available domestically at lower prices, and this addition comes circa '01 and not '06 as Amazon incorrectly states.
As for this album, it's beautifully sung and guitar-wise has more solid solos and leads than theur more recent "The Dying Daylights." This album does suffer from the same lack of repeat playability I complained about from that album as well. There's some tunes worth hearing, such as "Craving." The initial track, "Bitter Joy," is to me, the most uninspiring song on the disc. It begins with a really lazy sounding and VERY USED riff pattern and carries it throughout the song. Lyrically the song "Little Angel" is really awful... its a cliche goth love song. The BEST SONG on the disc, the one that makes this disc deserving has the most cliche title of all, "Sorrowsong." There's nothing inherently new about it, but it is good and is a great contribution to the genre.
Cliche best describes why this disc only garners 3 stars. There's some good moments and to me is still worth getting because I'm a fan of the genre as a whole, but they don't do anything that hasn't been done before. That said, you can tell the guys have a lot of fun making these records, and the songs "Craving, Fall, Erase Me, and Sorrowsong," are all very worthy of individual purchase and praise, though the first three less than the last.
