Amazon.com essential recording In 1976, when the Eagles, Peter Frampton, and Heart ruled the rock airwaves, along came five scruffy young men (the lead guitarist was maybe all of 18 and dressed in a schoolboy's uniform) from Australia playing some of the rowdiest, hardest, dirtiest rock of all time. Screaming "It's a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock 'n' Roll)," singer Bon Scott teased like a braggart. Sensing the rock community's growing dissatisfaction with bloated, epic-scaled bands, AC/DC were indeed a high-voltage act: their drummer nailed the beat with fury, their bluesy guitar riffs mutated into something metallic and sharp-edged, and Scott's vocals took the shrillness of early Robert Plant to a leaner and meaner place. "Live Wire" is one of the most electrifying hard rock songs imaginable, "High Voltage" and "TNT" are the musical equivalent of touching exposed nerves with a rusty fork, and "Jack" proves that white rock dudes can, contrary to popular belief, get down. Whew! --Lorry Fleming

One of the Greatest Debut Albums Ever May 13, 2001 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
High Voltage is an amazing album, in my opinion it captures AC/DC at their all time best, now don't get me wrong I'm a huge fan and seriously like every album but for some reason none of them can even compare to this one. Every song is classic, Angus Young's playing is top notch, the rhythm section of Phil Rudd and Mark Evans is incredibly solid, Malcolm Young also proves that he's the most underrated rhythm guitar player of all time, and what can be said about legendary frontman Bonn Scott, his whiskey drenched voice fits the blues based rock very well. The production on the album is also great courtesy of George Young, older brother of Angus and Malcolm. The album kicks off with one of AC/DC's finest songs ever, It's A Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock 'n' Roll. Everything about it is perfect, great solid rhythm and great guitar playing by both of the Young brothers. Rock 'n' Roll Singer is another really cool song, not very different than anything AC/DC's done, but great none the less. The next song is The Jack, this is to this day an in concert favorite, AC/DC's blues influences shine on this one. Live Wire is not anything that you wouldn't expect from AC/DC, great rhythm, top notch guitar playing, and excellent singing. The next song is probably AC/DC's best ever, T.N.T. This is also an in concert favorite, and it's extremely well written. Can I Sit Next to You Girl is another rocker it's then followed by Little Lover which is another blues based song similar to The Jack. She's Got Balls is a classic, the music is awesome and just the song in general is fantastic. Angus is great and Phil Rudd's drums compliment the song, the best part about him is that he doesn't overplay. The album closes with the title track, High Voltage. This song is also amazing, the best part about AC/DC is that even though their songs sound similar they are all really good. So that's it folks the end of one of the greatest albums of all time, only nine songs but not one bad one, this is a must have for any music fan.
HIGH VOLTAGE DEBUT!!! October 20, 2001 Jared Insell (Canada) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
AC/DC first North American release was a collection of songs about the rock 'n roll life style. Hard rock with a mild blend of blues, AC/DC's sound was very memorable and their High Voltage album would be too.Who could argue that AC/DC would not be a band to remember. During 1976 rock bands like Heart, Peter Frampton and The Bee Gees ruled the air waves and to have a group of rowdy ruff hard rocking Aussies with a maniacal front man show up, who wouldn't notice? Anyway the album is a classic! The title track HIGH VOLTAGE, TNT and LIVE WIRE are the highlights but other good tracks are IT'S A LONG WAY TO THE TOP IF YOU WANNA ROCK 'N ROLL, ROCK 'N ROLL SINGER, CAN I SIT NEXT TO YOU GIRL, and THE JACK. The other two songs SHE GOT BALLS and LITTLE LOVER are basically filler but some fans may like them a lot. Bottom line AC/DC's debut should not be avoided. Sure it's no Back in Black or Highway to Hell but it is a good rock album. I love the guitar playing on LIVE WIRE! I enjoyed the album very much! Almost every songs is good! Highly Recommended!
WORTH EVERY PENNY March 30, 2000 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Most of the tracks on this album are actually from AC/DC's second australian release "TNT". The only thing that can be said about "Highvoltage", or any Bon Scott era album for that matter is OUTSTANDING. This stuff is the rawest and most enjoyable Rock N Roll you'll ever hear. All releases between '74-'79 are consistently good, so buy them indiscriminately.
Beautiful... May 23, 2000 Alex (Virginia) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
When my adventure with the "Thunder from Down Under" began, I was 12. My dad loves AC/DC. I took it upon myself to buy "Back In Black", and thought to myself "This is a pretty good rock album." He said ,"You should get some of their older stuff, it's ten times better." So, when I received this CD as a gift, I immediately popped it in. I was totally blown away. This was the dirtiest, rawest, most beautiful thing I had ever heard in my entire life. Anything less than five stars is blasphemy.
Definition of Hard Rock December 2, 2000 ray (Chicago, IL) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Hard rock is defined by this album. Loud, fun, raunchy, but clean and rhythmic. Some of the Young brothers' best work is on here as well as the other guys. Why you don't hear more of these tunes on the radio is mind-boggling. "Live Wire" and "High Voltage" are so underrated, and "Rock and Roll Singer" is as good as any early AC/DC work. AC/DC's ability to make smooth, bluesy sounding hard rock is what separates them, and this album, from the rest of the hard rock crowd. If you are a borderline AC/DC fan, you will be transformed after hearing this one, guaranteed.
