This is one good buy May 4, 2003 Andre Felipe (Brazil) 15 out of 15 found this review helpful
'American Life' must be one of those Madonna singles with tons of versions with no much difference... Though something special is missing here (like, an enhanced video or a b-side), the tracks are indeed the best versions to be collected. The CD opens with the ORIGINAL VERSION (WITH RAP), yeah, the uncensored one everyone already knows: psycho-duck noises are looped all over the song, accompanied by an acoustic guitar with no stand-out melody, following a slight hip-hop influence. Secondly we have the brilliant OAKENFOLD DOWNTEMPO REMIX, which should be seriously considered as an alternative radio play version. It's got electric guitars all over it, giving the singing a much more ectic feel. The chorus is wonderful, Madonna's voice gets filtered giving out an emotional effect. The rap sounds much better as well, her voice is cleaner and more natural. Finishing the single there's the FELIX DA HOUSECAT REMIX, a totally different version. He digitally altered the vocals to completely new notes - less warned people may think it's another song. Very dancey, though not that pumping (stiff and dry beats, just like the rest of the new album). The rap sounds horrible on this one, Madonna sounds like a rich spoiled South Park character here, belting out her possessions. Anyway, it's just not a 5 stars single for its lack of content, though overall, it's worthy. But let's wait for more versions of the single.

I find it hard to believe that someone as bright as Madonna did not add her "conteversial" American Life video to this CD. If she had the single would have hit the charts in the number one position. I love this CD but feel strongly that the video should have accompanied. The remixes are great.

This song is not really a favorite of mine, however being a Madonna fan, I bought the cd singles of this song( 2 were released in Australia). I hated the red version of the remixes, but found a great version on the blue cd single that I really liked. It is called Felix Da Housecat remix. Now, whenever I listen to this song, this is the version that I listen to. It is much better than the album version I think. Good buy for all Madonna fans.
Dear Madonna: WRAP don't RAP! You ruined a perfectly ruined song! November 2, 2005 One World (Denver, CO USA) 0 out of 6 found this review helpful
This song would've been ok to listen to, but was not something I would buy, neither is it's full cd. I find the music too mechanical and too simplistic. I really miss Madonna's working with Stephen Bray and Patrick Leonard. However, her "Music" album had some good songs to offer, American Life, however is totally a let down. Now notice, I said "this song WOULD'VE been ok to listen to, but was not something I would buy..." What totally wraps up this song's final fate is...well the RAPPING. OMG!!!! I thought my friend was joking when he said Madonna did a rap on this song but then I heard it and UUUUUUUGGGGGGG!!!! Talk about nails across a chalk board! PLLLLLEEEEAAAASSSSSEEEE STOP already! That was torture! Madonna, if you must rap, Christmas is in about 1-1/2 months. Oh, whoops, that is WRAPping. Is there a non-rap version of this?
Very disppointing!! July 15, 2003 2 out of 21 found this review helpful
