5 out of 5 stars Buy this if you want to nearly kill yourself...   November 11, 2005

Seriously, if you get this cd and you don't preview it before you take it for a drive in your car, there is a likely chance that you will get into an accident from laughing so hard. I had to physically turn off my cd player in my car because I was laughing so hard in the first 8 minutes of the performance. NOT SAFE! Hahaha. But it's completely worth 10x the pruchase price, its one of the funniest cds I've ever heard. I'd kept hearing how funny Dane Cook is but I hate buying into hype right away so I wasn't in a rush to buy it. I'm sorry I waited. If you have ANY interest at all in the art form of COMEDY, buy this CD immedietly, but be forewarned about listening to it for the first time while driving... it's a hazard!

1 out of 5 stars He's the biggest thing in comedy? Really?   September 13, 2006

Man, have I given this guy a chance. Multiple chances. Listened to the CDs, saw the big HBO special. I mean, his career is red hot now. He clearly has lots of fans. Mostly college age (perhaps this should be a warning to some of you). All I can say is "maybe they'll grow out of it." He is NOT funny. His act has no bite, no point of view, no opinion/viewpoint at all. His comedy consists of spewing observations his audience can relate to (the "this is all happened to us" or "has this ever happened to you?" school of humor). He runs about manically, acting out every little word that comes out of his mouth (for those in the audience that may not be so good with words). His fans acknowledge that, yes, they can relate. "Yeah! That's happened to me!" "I know that reference!' They laugh, cheer, clap, and plunk down their hard-earned dollars for his vanilla wit. He never actually COMMENTS on the things he discusses in any intelligent, interesting way. He has no edge. He's not outraged by anything. He's cute 'n' cuddly. Richard Pryor must be rolling in his grave at the very fact that Cook is classified as a stand up comic. "Pryor? The guy writing this must be OLD!' Okay, try this on for size: Chris Rock is good comedy. Same with Dave Chappelle. Carlin. Laura Kightlinger. Kinison. Rodney Dangerfield. Bob Saget. Gilbert Gottfried. Dom Irrera. Lewis Black. Robert Klein. The late Mitch Hedberg. Jim Norton. Patton Oswalt. Brian Posehn. DeGeneres. Jon Stewart. Bob & David. The UCB. I'm not even a big fan of Sarah Silverman, but at least she's trying to bring something different to the party. Anything but this! God help us. Let's hope he goes the way of Carrot Top and Dice soon (don't forget, Cook fans, Mr. Top and Mr. Clay were once as popular as your boy here).

    5 out of 5 stars 5 STARS?? HOW ABOUT 10!!!!!   August 16, 2003

I first saw Dane Cook on Comedy Central like most people, and he won me over from the start. I immediately searched amazon to see if he had a comedy cd out. Once i saw "Harmful If Swallowed" was out i instantly bought it without hesitation.
The cd itself is absolutely hilarious!!! My favorite tracks are his rants on how uncool Kool-Aid is and the quiet pickles lady at the "BK Lounge" drive-thru. It's the best to listen to any time, anywhere. Especially when sitting in traffic, it'll put a big smile on your face. If anyone tries to cut you off you won't be cursing, you'll be laughing when u catch yourself saying "ummm... helllllooooo???!, ummm hiii???!!" as Dane points out on the cd.
I've demanded my friends to watch the dvd and every single one has cried from laughter. It's got an unedited version of his comedy central special, with ALOT of deleted jokes - which i was surprised were cut from the show b/c they are way too funny!! I, myself, can't sit through it without my stomach hurting by the end. Do yourself a favor and buy this cd/dvd combo. It's a great deal and the comedy never gets tired or old after a few plays! GO BUY IT!

1 out of 5 stars Umm, guess you needed to be there   August 28, 2004

I'm being slightly unfair because I haven't heard this CD, but there is no way in hell I would. Is this what passes for comedy now? If so then you guys can keep it!

Dane Cook doesn't make jokes, he talks about really lame subject matter using weird voices and sound effects squeezing a laugh out of his audience. Without his irratic behavior his jokes boil down to simple references of his life with seemingly clever references to pop culture. Throughout his comedy show Dane also attempts to coin a few phrases and test out new "hip" lingo. None of it actually sticks though. About the only funny moments of his show (and they are a chuckle at best) are when he says something you can actually relate to. This, however, is extremely rare. I've never felt the need to seek out people getting hit by cars, take a crap on someone's coat, or become a spitting dinosaur from Jurrasic Park. Almost like the next Jim Carrey he'll overact as much as possible to even get a smile out of his audience. If stabbing yourself on stage would get a laugh I'm sured he'd go there too. I wouldn't really call him a physical comedian though, I wouldn't call him a comedian at all because he doesn't make me laugh.

However, if obnoxious noises and lame subject matter are your cup of tea then I think Dane Cook can provide the scolding hot water. Excuse me for saving my laughs for someone who actually says clever things and is a bit more than some lonely frat boy that always got his ass kicked for playing lame jokes on people at parties he wasn't even invited to.

    Part II:
Shawn, you shouldn't be so mean. You completely misunderstood what I was trying to say. Personally speaking, I think this album deserves only one star because every single joke is 10% punchline and 90% delivery. I couldn't retell any of these jokes to my friends and family because they're not funny and I'm not going to make a complete fool out of myself by flailing around and talking in weird voices the way that Dane Cook is so apt at doing. If I were to retell these jokes with normal inflection and a straight face they would mean absolutely nothing. He's like the lowley popstar who has absolutely zero talent except for the fact he can dazzle the audience by memorizing dance moves.

So therefore this is the perfect CD for the typical American. Buy this CD now! Buy it twice! Play it for all of your friends! Do Dane Cook impressions at parties! Nurture your mind with bombastically over-the-top drivel! Most important of all, continue the American tradition of idiocy!!! If Americans are so infallible as you say Shawn, then how did Kidz Bop 7 make it to Billboard's Top 10? It's because of CD's like that many people don't believe in God.

For those of you who dropped out of high school or are currently drunk and didn't understand, "You guys is all retarded."

What a total hack. Do people really think this guy has talent? He is ruining the genre! Stupid me bought the CD because it seemed to be everywhere...big mistake. AVOID.
