    Editorial Reviews:

    Amazon.com
Light R&B hooks, breathy vocals, guest rappers--it sounds like a recipe for the latest effort from J-Lo or Ashanti, but those elements make up the mix on Mexican diva Thalia's self-titled, English-language debut album. It's a slickly produced smorgasbord, but there's little of the personality, energy and growth here that Thalia has exhibited on her last three Spanish-language studio albums. Instead, the singer opts for maximum mainstream appeal which, in this case, includes collaborating with a bevy of hip-pop producers and songwriters, including Rick Wake (Celine Dion, Anastacia), Cory Rooney (J-Lo, Destiny's Child) and Cathy Dennis (Kylie Minogue, Kelly Clarkson). The first single, "I Want You," featuring Fat Joe, breezes in and out of memory almost instantly. The album's six remaining original tunes are equally anonymous. Only the yearning ballad "Closer To You" and a remix of "The Mexican," both repeats from Thalia's 2002 album, generate any real heat. It's not an altogether disastrous effort, but that so much of Thalia's own flavor was lost in the translation is ultimately disappointing. --Joey Guerra

1 out of 5 stars THE EVIL DOINGS OF TOMMY MATOLA! THALIA HAS SOLD OUT!   May 20, 2004

WOW! This album sucks! What was Thalia thinking!? I have been a fan of Thalia for many years so when I found out she was crossing over (even though she swore she never would... LIAR!) I was a little curious. For gods sake I have all her older albums like LOVE and MUNDO DE CRYSTAL! Thalia is known for her hot latin inspired pop music and flawless ballads. What this album is a "ghetto-fied" monstrosity! What a shame! Thalia needed to stay true to her roots and give the anglo community a taste of TRUE latin flavor. For example, her grammy nominated album ARRASANDO. THALIA IS A NOW A BIG J.LO WANNABE... AND TOMMY MATOLA (HER HUSBAND) IS PROBABLY TO BLAME. STICK TO WHAT YOU KNOW, THALIA.

3 out of 5 stars The Mexican Wants To Dance...   June 22, 2004

Thalia has been a household name in the spanish community now for almost 2 decades, it wasn't until the last 3 spanish efforts under EMI records and Emilo Estefan's and Estefano's production and direction that Thalia started charting with intensity. The english effort, released under Virgin Records, is mediocre to say the least. I am a huge fan of Thalia's, and I was fortunate enough to have seen her twice, and met her once. She is a pleasant being with unique capabilities, but she fails to demonstrate that originality in the english debut. I would go as far as to say that she is somewhat of a spanish Madonna for the latin community, she reinvents herself and always surprises fans with new sounds and experimentation. On the 'Thalia' album she sounds packaged. "I Want You" is forgetable, and designed for mainstream. The second single, "Baby, I'm In Love" is slightly above average, the radio mix version on the commercialy released single is far better than the original album version. "Misbehavin'" is an enjoyable track, just redundant. I am not a fan of "What's It Gonna Be Boy?", as it sounds too manufactured and lacks substance in vocals. The third single "Don't Look Back", which went top 10 on the club charts, as well as "Save The Day", "The Mexican (Dance Dance)" & "Closer To You" are a breath of fresh air, as they sound like the Thalia i am used to, and they are the best piece of original work on the album, "Another Girl" is a cliche to say the least, and "Tu Y Yo" was not destined to be re-recorded with the english tongue. Overall if you are a fan of Thalia, you will find something worth listening to, if not I would advise her spanish "Greatest Hits" album, "Thalia" [2002 Spanish Album]or "Arrasando".

    4 out of 5 stars A great crossover   December 29, 2003

It wasn't recently that I had discovered Thalia. When reading her "Thank Yous" in the liner notes, I was amazed to discover this was her 10th studio album. Once I did my research and asked around, I found out Thalia has been around for quite some time. Seems like the Madonna of Spanish music has finally made her crossover, and I am loving it.

"I Want You," a huge success of 2003, opens this album with a bang. The lyrics are fun, and she even brings along Fat Joe to put a hip-hop twist onto the song. Other tracks like "Closer to You," and "Whats It's Gonna Be Boy?" are also nicely done. By far my favorite track is "Baby I'm in Love." It has done great in airplay and the success of the single will hopefully lead to a string of more hits for Thalia.

After seeing her in concert here in Houston, I quickly realized Thalia is a fun and engergetic performer. Although I don't believe she has the best voice, she has easily become one of my favorites with this album alone. I am a bit disappointed "A Quien Le Importa" was not included on this album, although the Spanish versions of 4 tracks are included at the end.

Great job Thalia, hope to hear even more from you with album 11.

1 out of 5 stars Identity crisis?   July 12, 2003

I cannot begin to tell you how surprised I was to see that Thalia was releasing an English language cd. My surprise was to find a weak, rushed, boring material with lack of originality. The first single is a song that dissapears as soon as you hear it, it doesn't stick to you, it doesn't offer anything from her, vocally, lirycally, she sounds like a cheap copy of Jennifer Lopez. And out of the 14 songs only 8 are new material the rest are translated or remixes from Spanish songs. The rest of the songs are horrible, I have to be honest, I thought coming with the intentions of making a crossover this cd shoud've been carefully produced and arranged. Thalia is not original and here is why: out of her 10 cds, 5 have been called "THALIA" and since 2000 she has released 5 cds, you read it right 5 (cinco) cds!!!!; she is killing her audience because she doesn't give them a break, this shows a state of desperation from both the artist and the company. She doesn't tour, she does not know how to work the public, she has no vocal ability whatsoever to make her sound unique; and most importantly the word Crossover does not mean that you sing in a different language and that's it!, crossover means winning a foreign audience, people that normally wouldn't know who you are, Thalia has no cross-over. Her recent TV appearances show poor English and lack of imagination.
As a Mexican singer, she does not offer anything from that side of the world, actually she looks and sounds like "a ghetto wanna be kindda girl".
Please do your selves a favor don't contribute to more artists like this.

    12. Alguien Real- (4/5) Better in english.
    13. Cerca Te Di-(3/5) Not to well.

    2. Me Pones Sexy (video) (5/5)
