She may have played a teenaged girl mistaken for a pop star in The Lizzie McGuire Movie, but after releasing a Christmas album in 2002, and crooning two songs on the movie's soundtrack, Hilary Duff looks like she means business. The only trouble is, she doesn't sound like it. Although dubbing her first album Metamorphosis, the disc is anything but. Her singing is as coy and kittenish as her on-screen persona and she mugs her way through most of the 13 songs with charm and aplomb, but little natural singing talent. But to her credit, the actress has managed to cover a multitude of vocal sins by hiring a team of crack producers, who double her voice whenever possible, giving many of the tracks the rather anthemic feel of a cheerleading squad. The best songs on the disc are the three masterminded by the Matrix, the same production team that oversaw Avril Lavigne's hit disc and they give the lissome actress's singing some attitude and grit, like on the infectious and spectacularly bratty "So Yesterday," and the cleverly conceived "Math," complete with heavy metal guitar riffs. But Duff is not inhabiting that saucy jailbait territory staked by Britney Spears. At the ripe old age sixteen, she's much more Barbies than bustiers. --Jaan Uhelszki

    4 out of 5 stars A review from a pop fan   October 4, 2003

Ok, I went through quite a bit of the reviews to figure out whether I should get the CD or not... and of course it was kind of useless because all there was, was too many people going "I LOVE HILARY, she's the best" and too many people going "I HATE HILARY, SHE SUCKS!" and I was like... ok..... like those are gonna help my decision. Truly, I don't think people should review unless they are into the type of music the artist is considered because mostly on a country album there'll be rap fans reviewing "THIS SUCKS" when they most likely dont have the album, and in this case, 23+ year old girls saying its just teeny bubblegum pop. OMG!!!!! What the heck do they expect. The Facts: Hilary Duff is 15, She is a teenage girl with a life, she is a beginning singer and yet there are people comparing her to Mariah Carey and Whiteney Houston???!?!?! First off, if you're into adult contemporary.. you shouldnt even be tempted to listen to this, and face the facts.. teen pop is in and teens would not give a f*$# what you think.

Now I am a pop fan so this will be a true review. Well, unlike the past pop-princesses, Hilary is not sexual at all and keeps things on a G-rated basis which is actually kind of good. The songs are catchy ad the ballads are soft, her voice is pretty alright.. much different from Britney and Christina. The catchy songs are really great to dance to and move your head to... its great! Songs like "So Yesterday, Come Clean, Party Up, Sweet 16 and Why Not" just get you straight into a good mood while "Love Just Is, Anywhere But Here, Love Just Is, Inner Voice" are nice to lay back and enjoy the ballads. Overall.... IF YOU LIKE POP!!!!! this is a great addition to your CD collection...and if you dont.... why the heck are you spending your time here?

5 out of 5 stars Impressive debut   December 27, 2004

A few of the songs are a little cheesy and/or shallow, and some parts are a bit overproduced, but besides that this is a very strong and enjoyable album. Hilary sings within her voice well, without forcing it to sound like someone else (something she doesn't do quite as well in her self-titled album). It's not a spectacular voice, but it's pleasant...and often times pleasant is easier to listen to than spectacular.

My two favorite songs are "Come Clean" (which has a wonderful message about grace and new beginnings, which is completely lost in the music video of the song, which cheapens it by making it about waiting for some guy to come) and "Love Just Is" (cheesy lyrics, but very beautiful melody).

This is a very impressive first album, which establishes Hilary as more than an actress and a pretty face.

    Well, well, well.
First off, I would like to say I don't have anything really against Hilary Duff. I mean, she's a decent actress, she's pretty and everything. Her only problem is her "singing" career. She has an ok, voice- don't get me wrong- but that's just it. It's OK. Her CD is really repetitive in theme, lyrics and beat; and the stuff she does is very cookie-cutter. She reminds me of Britney back in the day. Innocent at first, fresh from a Disney show, but as her success grew, her clothes tightened and lessened in length, and her make-up grew. I don't like her CD at all, and I think for as much money as Disney spent on her, she should have been able to buy a better vocal coach. Lol. Anyway I don't have enough bad things to say about "Metamorphosis," but I truly hope I don't offend anyone.
    Thanks for your time!

1 out of 5 stars It's the Spice Girls all over again   December 31, 2003

I was a young elementary schooler when The Spice Girls hit the US. For almost a year i loved them and never understood what the older kids meant when they said that The Spice Girls sucked. I grew out of them, but it is not until now that I realize what they meant. Hilary Duff is simply a teeny bopper with 90% of her fans under the age of 10. Just as the kids from 7 years ago latched onto the spice girls' glittery outfits and fluff songs, they latch onto Hilary Duff now because she is the "cool older girl." She doesn't even write or have much of anything to do with what goes into her songs. Even other singers such as Christina Aguilera make up for some of that in singing talent. While I do not think her songs on Metamorphosis sound like "nails on a chalkboard," they are certainly nothing special. She might have had to "make it on her own" into the acting world, but her singing career is nothing but the record industry making easy cash off of a familar face. Those of you who have daughters under the age of ten, they will love her bubble-gum music. For anybody else looking for a new artist- I advise you to keep looking elsewhere.

    3 out of 5 stars Don't Dismiss it Yet   December 24, 2003

Reviews should not be a flame war between those who hate stars and those who love them, each side ferociously clinging to their prerogative that their belief is the only true one. That being said, despite this CD's (many) flaws, the lovable Hilary Duff still triumphs.

First, let's be honest; Duff is not a singer, and this CD makes that obvious (KMart's exclusive "Metamorphosis Remixed" CD makes this even more painfully obvious). However, she deserves bonus points for keeping her clothes on and not betraying her Disney fans by selling out her celebrity in favor of tube tops and skirts that may as well be belts. Further, Duff doesn't claim to be any more than she is, and is wise not to present herself as such. Thus, Duff delivers some truly catchy songs with good production. Voice lessons will undoubtedly make future albums compulsory in any pop music fan's collection.

This is a good start, and any flaws the CD has are easily overlooked by catchy hits and Duff's winning, force-of-nature personality.
