Better than Jessica's November 16, 2003 26 out of 42 found this review helpful
When I received this album, the only hope I had was that Mr. Simpson would show some skin. When I opened the case, I was disappointed to find no skin, not even a little glimpse. So I prepared to chuck the album in the sell bin after I gave it a listen. I popped it in and listened, TWICE.1. Shut Up (8.5/10)- I couldn't get this song out of my head for hours. It's catchy, great first release! 2. Let Go (6/10) 3. This I Swear (7.5/10)- If this hadn't been the theme to Newlyweds and crammed down my throat everytime I watched it, this would be a nice ballad. It is slightly different, better, than the theme. 4. Could You Love (8/10)-has a ballad/ upbeat mix to it. 5. Carry On (7/10) 6. You're the Only Place (3/10)- boring, has a Richard Marx, 80's ballad sound to it. 7. Can't Stop Loving You (4/10)- upbeat but not a favorite 8. Edge of Eternity (10/10)- Surprisingly, I love this ballad. If this is the second release, I think SoulO will surpass "In This Skin" sales. 9. It's Alright (9.5/10)- woohooo a dirty song. This makes me happy! The squeaky clean boy sings about pushing her up against the wall and a few other unmetionables. Gotta love that! 10. I Fall In Love Again (2/10)- I skipped this. It's the same story, different artist. 11. Open Your Eyes (7/10)- has the boy band sound. Not anything to get excited about. 12. On and On (6/10) The album has some great songs, some mediocre songs and those that should have been left off the album. For a first solo release, it isn't horrible and isn't nearly as forgettable as his wife's third attempt. If he could get away from the boy band ballad thing, it would help his solo efforts. I hope he does not follow in his wife's lead and put her in any of his videos. His audience is teenage to late twenty-something females, and in order to keep them happy, he needs to not remind them that he is indeed married. By the way, my copy still hasn't made it to the sell bin. I'm scratching the jacket with a penny with all hopes that it is like a lottery ticket and his shirt will come off!

Now, we all know that Nick and Jessica's antics have been milked to death, but I just want to point out that earlier this year, Nick appeared in an interview where he expressed his dismay on the low sales of his solo debut album, SoulO (cheesy title, isn't it?). Well, maybe that's because a lot of people were in the same boat that I was in; until a few months ago, I didn't even know this album existed. This is basically an average album. Nick still has a great voice, but a great voice can't cover up not-so-great lyrics. Take the single "Shut Up", for example. Nick uses stupid lyrics to get the mood right like: "You bite my neck/I pull your hair/Next thing we know/No underwear." There are also some cheesy ballads like "You're the Only Place" (well, the first verse, anyway) and especially "This I Swear". The only one that really works is the very last one, "On and On". There are a few other questionable songs on here too, especially the techno vibe of "It's Alright". As I said before, Nick's voice is still impressive, but what he has to work with really isn't. This album is strictly for diehards. Anthony Rupert
Nick's best choice! November 15, 2003 16 out of 18 found this review helpful
Before the release of Nick Lachey's new album, "SoulO", I had recently downloaded the entire CD 2 months before its release date (shame on me). All of the songs that Nick recorded are phenominal, with a few exceptions. 1. Shut Up - Nice, up-tempo song. Great first single. 2. Let Go - Interesting story for an interesting song. 3. This I Swear - Best ballad on the album! Very heart-warming. 4. Could U Love - Pop sound with some techno. 5. Carry On - Nice acoustic guitar. Not one of the best songs on the album 6. You're The Only Place - Another nice ballad. Somewhat of a tear-jerker...not really. 7. Can't Stop Lovin You - Great song to learn on the guitar. Nice pop song. 8. Edge of Eternity - Ok song. Not the best song. 9. It's Alright - Dance, kind of song with some techno, drums, and trumpets! 10. Fall In Love - 3rd ballad. Nice ballad. Not the best ballad on the album. 11. Open Your Eyes - Probably the best up-tempo song on the album. 12. On and On - 2nd best ballad. TEAR-JERKER! PASS THE TISSUES!
Mindless and Boring Pop April 29, 2004 16 out of 28 found this review helpful
Nick should have stayed with 98 Degrees, because on this cd he offers nothing new or exciting to the scene. He is basically doing the same fluffy pop songs that he used to do with his old group. Nick has a decent voice, but corny love ballads and cheesy up-tempo songs makes this cd sounds like garbage. It appears his record company doesn't have faith in him, they didn't do a very good job marketing him. So that should tell you something. This cd is basically a rush job to cash in on his new status...the status of being married to Miss Chicken of the Sea.
Great 'Soulo' album from Nick Lachey! November 12, 2003 15 out of 23 found this review helpful
I got this CD because I love 'This I Swear' and I don't regret getting it at all! This is actually a very good CD and I pretty much love the whole CD. "Shut Up" is pretty enjoyable up beat song. "This I Swear" is my favorite. I hope that the radio will give him some airtime.
