This edition has been digitally re-mastered from the original master tapes by Eurythmics mastermind Dave Stewart, with input from collaborator Annie Lennox. In addition, there are five bonus tracks: a mixture of B-sides, remixes and previously unreleased material (notably a cover of the Beatles' "Come Together"). The packaging is a six-panel digipack redesign orchestrated by Laurence Stevens Design, the firm who art-directed all the original releases, while the thick booklets contain rare photos and insightful, new sleeve notes.

5 out of 5 stars Remastering Perfection   November 21, 2005

Last week, I ordered the CD here, online. Received it this morning in the mail. The album is entirely worth every penny.
Just for the pictures & packaging alone, it's a "Must Have" for anyone. I'm very impressed with the remastered sound and the colorful & glossy photos, which I've never seen before. Having read reviews of this CD elsewhere & on amazon as well, I wasn't sure if I should buy it...but now I don't regret my decision.
Who cares if the music is "Dated"? This album was originally recorded in 1987, making it 18 years old. "Savage" was recorded at the very same time Annie & Dave decided to go their own ways "music-writing wise". Anyone who purchases this CD will be able to read about the "Behind the Scenes" or "Making of" this album, which is very interesting. Helped me appreciate the album even more, for it was and STILL IS my favorite Eurythmics recording to date.

    Tracklist:

    05- Shame
    06- Savage
    07- I Need A Man
08- Put The Blame On Me
    09- Heaven
    10- Wide Eyed Girl
    11- I Need You
    12- Brand New Day
    Bonus Tracks
    13- Beethoven (Extended Philharmonic Version)
    14- Shame (Dance Mix)
    15- I Need A Man (Macho Mix)

    - Booklet contains NO lyrics. Last page features album credits
    - Booklet contains many photos of Annie in the "Savage" Photoshoot + an interesting "BIO" of the album
    - Disc is silver (almost like original) without the large titling
    - CD is CopyProtected
    - Package contains a small, square "advert" or mini-flyer for remastered Eurythmics CDs

Welcome back to the wonderful world of 80's pop synth. This has always been my favorite album since I was in my early teens.
There are still parts of the album I'm only discovering now. And it's even greater when a remastered recording brings out the hidden "qualities" in a song. How neat, to discover "Come Together" as a Beatles cover tune. It's about time this "Golden Oldie" sees the light from Eurythmics' vault of songs. "Come Together" is fun & ends the album pretty well. Annie's voice is suitable for this song, breathing it new life. The original album cut of "I Need You" doesn't fit in with the other "dark & angry" songs and the "dubbed" background chatter & laughter is trashy and distracting. So...why would Annie & Dave put another "live" version of this track on the CD now? That's my only gripe.

5 out of 5 stars WOW..is all that can be said.....   December 2, 2005

This is Annie Lennox's favorite Eurythmics album and it is clear to see why. It is deeply personal and beautifully put together. The unheard track, 'Come Together' is EXCELLENT and has a whole new slant, when given Eurythmics magical touch. I am profoundly annoyed by some of the tedious complaints in some of the reviews below. "J. Brady" is considerably jaded it seems, and "Dennis Dunigan II" insatiable, if not ungratful. There are only so many tracks that can be stuffed into one CD! As a Eurythimcs collector of 22 years, I am thrilled that these non-U.S. old b-sides are now available to us and remastered, at that! As well, most all of the extended versions that we all had on "12 vinyl in our storage closets, will not have to be taken out and dusted off, because we have them here, with excellent sound quality! So, not EVERY Eurythmics song ever created is included on these new remasters. It is a thrill to have a staggering 44 bonus tracks, countless unseen photos in the liner notes (from the original negatives) and all of the songs so dear to some of us, beautifully remastered.

5 out of 5 stars Take Me To The Desert Where There Has To Be A Whole Heap Of Nothing For You And Me.   November 27, 2005

When "Savage" was released in December 1987, I had already seen the video for "Beethoven (I Love To Listen To)" and "I Need A Man". After "Revenge" I was beginning to wonder where the Eurythmics would go next. I was very happily surprised when I found they went back to their electronic roots. Yet, "Savage" seems like their most technologically advanced and sophisticated album. It felt like their edgiest work both musically and lyrically, and it became my favorite Eurythmics album.

I'll admit that "Beethoven (I Love To Listen To)" was an unlikely first single, and it still is one of their most bizarre songs, and the video was perfectly disturbing. There were no hits from this cd and for good reason, radio wasn't ready. That's not to say that this album was lacking in memorable melodies, but the content was perhaps the darkest in the Eurythmics catalogue. Broken relationships was the main theme here with the brilliant, should-have-been-a-hit-single "I've Got A Lover (Back In Japan)", the awkward "Do You Want To Break Up?", the emotionally stirring third single "You Have Placed A Chill In My Heart" which probably failed to crack the top 40 because of it's ill-timed release in May 1988, just in time for the summer. "Shame" is a beautiful track. The title track is another strange entry in the Eurythmics canon, a vindictively whispered tale. "I Need A Man", the second single, is a great tirade about what kind of man makes a quality man. "Put The Blame On Me" is more of a disco track followed by the relaxing, meditative almost instrumental "Heaven". "Wide Eyed Girl" is again more disco sounding followed by the album closers "I Need You", the only acoustic track here and "Brand New Day" which should have been a hit single.

As is the norm for this remastered series, Dave Stewart tended to the remastering job which is excellent. The b-sides are just okay. "Beethoven (Philharmonic Version)" is just an instrumental orchestrated version of the original which is okay, but nothing special. "Shame (Dance Mix)" and "I Need A Man (Macho Mix)" are interesting reinterpretations of the originals. "I Need You (Live)" is okay. Their cover of The Beatles' "Come Together" is also interesting, but not very special.

Again, no lyrics included here, but the liner notes and additional photographs of the time are good. I found that "Savage" is also Annie's favorite album as well. I think of this recording as a test for true Eurythmics fans. If you found this to be their best work, you must truly love the Eurythmics. The same cannot be said of their next release, "We Too Are One". I think it would have been nice to include the Annie Lennox/Al Green 1988 cover of "Put A Little Love In Your Heart" from the "Scrooged" soundtrack right following "Brand New Day". It would have fit nicely I think.

5 out of 5 stars Stunning "Savage"   December 2, 2005

I remember buying this album in 1987, and being struck by the beauty, darkness and stylishness of this album. I had been a fan of Eurythmics for some time but this was the one album by them that made an impression on me. From the stunning album cover photography to the unique opening track "Beethoven (I Love To Listen To)", this was unlike any other Eurythmics album.

I liked that Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart made an album that may not have been as commercial as previous albums, but they stayed true to their vision, which was admittedly often dark. "I Need A Man" was one of their most raucous songs, and although it was not a big hit on North American radio, it still remains a pumping track, thanks to Stewart's powerhouse guitars, and Lennox's Jagger-esque vocals. "You Have A Placed A Chill In My Heart" is a biting but also touching love song over a techno beat, and both "Shame" and "Savage" are moving and haunting.

The newly remastered version of "Savage" is a true gift to fans who have waited almost 20 years to hear this album in pristine sound. The bonus tracks are wonderful, including the 12-inch dance versions which are a reminder that the Eurythmics have always been popular in the clubs.

"Savage" is my favorite Eurythmics album because it truly represents their innovative vision, and it remains an underrated album that was released at a time when teen-pop (ie. Tiffany, Debbie Gibson, The Jets) was making its mark on the charts in the late 80s. The Eurythmics' songs of breaking up, lust, loneliness and cruelty may not have been what radio wanted to play alongside "Could've Been" or "Only In My Dreams" but they demonstrated a band at its peak, and almost 20 years later, those songs still retain the power they did when first released.

5 out of 5 stars More savage beauty   January 1, 2006
2 out of 3 found this review helpful

This 1987 album saw Eurythmics return to their electronic/experimental roots after the soul/R&B excursion Be Yourself Tonight (1985) and the full-bodied pop-rock of Revenge (1986). It has been substantially enhanced with the addition of 5 bonus tracks and deluxe packaging that includes a booklet with historical notes.

Whilst Beethoven (I Love To Listen To) is experimental yet catchy and I've Got A Lover (Back In Japan) tuneful and pleasant enough, it's with the buoyant Do You Want To Break Up? that the album really gathers momentum.

The next 3 songs are true classics, each mirroring a different side of Eurythmics at their most creative. The deceptively breezy You Have Placed A Chill In My Heart is a strange mix of cynicism and hope, despair and elation.

Shame is perfect 60s nostalgia at its most evocative and hypnotically tuneful, while the eerie title track creates a beautifully bleak landscape of alienation and despair - Love Is A Stranger devoid of romanticism.

Atypical of the album, I Need You has prominent acoustic guitars and a live feel, whilst Brand New Day starts out as a moving morning-after ballad and develops into an atmospheric uptempo number.

Amongst the bonus tracks, my favourites are the extended philharmonic version of Beethoven and the dance mix of Shame. There is also a powerful live version of I Need You, and the album concludes with the Lennon/McCartney song Come Together.

The bonus tracks and the deluxe packaging have improved an already classic album by these masters of innovative synth-pop. Savage is a must-have for Eurythmics fans and all those who love timeless pop music.
