5 out of 5 stars Powerless To Resist This Song's Charms!   June 1, 2004

When Nelly Furtado released her debut album "Whoa, Nelly!" in the fall of 2000, she quickly became one of the most talked-about and hyped female artists for years. The album sold 7 million copies worldwide and spawned the massive hit singles "I'm Like A Bird," "Turn Off The Light" and "...On The Radio." Even after all this success and the Grammy, Nelly still felt it was time to focus on her second album. Her world tour of 2001/2002 was a complete success and she was blessed in early 2003 when she announced she would be expecting her first child. She gave birth to the baby in late 2003 and named him Nevis. She was a 24 year old mother and international superstar with a highly-anticipated sophomore album in the pipeline. It was finally released in November 2003. It was called "Folklore," and to me, it's definitely one of the best albums I have ever bought in my life! There isn't a bad track on offer - they're all fantastic. Yeah, this album commands credibility, but there's nothing wrong with that. With music as brilliant as is on proud display here, you can't blame her for trying!

This high standard of music is reflected in the album's first single, the infectious "Powerless (Say What You Want)." The song didn't became a massive hit worldwide but on the radio, it was on top! My local radio station must have played this song a million times, but I'm not complaining! The song opens with a fantastic beat and a very catchy drum and guitar beat plays the song in. The edgy beat sets in, before Nelly opens with the first verse, "Paint my face in your magazines, make it look whiter than it seems. Paint me over with your dreams, shove away my ethnicity. Burn ever notion that I may have a flame inside to fight and say just what is on my mind, without offending your might." Nelly then sings the glorious chorus, "Cuz this life is too short to live it just for you. But when you feel so powerless what are you gonna do? So say what you want."

The edgy beat then surfaces as Nelly moves into the second verse, "I saw her face outside today. Weatherworn, looking all the rage. They took her passion and her gaze and made a poster. Now it's moccasins we sport. We take the culture and contort. Perhaps only too distort what we are hiding." Nelly then sings the chorus once more before singing the bridge, "Hey you, the one, the one outside, are you ever gonna get it, get in? Hey you, the one that don't fit in, how ya, how ya gonna get in? Hey you, the one outside, are you ever gonna get in with your broken teeth, broken jaw, broken mojo." The song then dies down to just the simple beat and catchy banjo and Nelly sings the chorus once more, before singing it a few more times until the banjo plays solo and the song ends.

When I first heard this song, I knew that Nelly had returned and that she was about to make her second big career impact. The song is catchy as heck, and the banjo is very representative of Nelly's Portuguese/Canadian roots. The video is fantastic, as is usually the case with Miss Furtado, and she completely sells the song from deep down inside her soul. Her depth, her passion, and her dedication to her culture is not only beautiful, it's inspiring.

Nelly Furtado, one of the year's most refreshing (and best) artists continues to release uplifting, spirited music with "Powerless," a quirky song with some meaning.

For all those of us who live our lives by the moon, Nelly Furtado splahes our hopes and dreams across the music industry with energy and soul. A must have for all free spirits and music lovers.

4 out of 5 stars Great song- but no club mixes here   March 1, 2005

I bought this single hoping the Josh-desi Remix was going to be the lively dance mix I've heard in clubs & loved so much. No such luck- it's more of a re-working of the song than a true remix & it's definitely not clubby. Not bad- just not even close to what I was hoping for. Love the song! I just wish I knew where to find that club mix!!
