Starting off with the very Thrash-inspired Severed Head Stoning, it's clear that Cannibal Corpse have mastered the art of Death Metal as well as flawless production. The guitar, drums, vocals and even bass all shine through on this recording not having one particular instrument over-shadow the rest.

The Wretched Spawn actually shows Cannibal Corpse using a variety of song-structures, tempos and ideas. You have an extremely technical, brutal track like Frantic Disembowelment then you have tracks like Rotted Body Landslide and Decency Defied that could almost be considered, dare I say it ... "catchy;" well, to a Metal fan anyhow. I'd also like to mention that not one particular member of the band dominates the writing. Jack Owen (guitar), Alex Webster (bass) and Pat O'Brien (guitar) all contribute songs on this album giving you a nice variety of writing-styles.

Lyrically, well, it's Cannibal Corpse so you can expect gore-laden themes displayed in the song titles and obviously the lyrics. As far as the seriousness, it's brutal music with brutal lyrics. This style of music would sound quite silly with upbeat lyrics and themes ... the lyrics are not meant to be taken seriously although they often are ... for a reason I don't know.

The Wretched Spawn also comes with a bonus DVD that is simply awesome. I have been a musician for over eight years and I really enjoyed seeing Cannibal Corpse describe their set-ups, how the studio time works and the like. The bonus DVD is a true treat for musicians and fans alike giving you a good look into Cannibal Corpse's studio-life. There are also some excellent jam sessions recorded for the DVD that are mind-blowing (especially Frantic Disembowelment). Basically, if you're a musician (or a fan) you'll definitely appreciate the bonus DVD featured here.

Overall, I'd say this is possibly the best Death Metal album I've heard yet. If you consider yourself a Cannibal Corpse fan you are definitely missing out if you don't pick this one up. If you are just beginning to explore brutal Death Metal, this is definitely a good place to start. Simply put, a killer album from a killer band.

Ladies and gentlemen, meet Cannibal Corpse. The Most Overrated and Pathetic Death Metal band in history. For real stuff, listen to Vader, Malevolent Creation, Possessed, Morbid Angel (even bad Morbid Angel is better then this), etc. This is stuff that Serial Killers jack off to. Speaking of Serial Killers, Macabre is good too. Good Death Metal has lyrics that aren't thought up in 5 minutes, aren't the exact same album repeated over and over, has great guitar solos (these guys suck), and a better drummer (this guy is average at best, check out Vader), and better yet, has a vocalist that has range, volume and can actually annunciate words. Hey look what I can do! I can belch into a microphone and slap the strings on my guitar and it makes SOUNDS!

This sums up Cannibal Corpse and other crappy "Satanic" gore metal bands who try too hard to be evil. I can't stand dumbs*its like this "JesusChrist Died in Vein" moron. Oh I get it now. Vein. Vain. It's like they are the same... but they're not! The same. Yeah. This musical ape trashes melodic death metal? I suppose metal bands are required to have no musical ability or talent. If you can play more than two chords and change your timing in mid-tempo, then F*CK YOU buddy! If you want boring mainstream recycled death metal, yeah... listen to some Corpse. If you want metal that is memorable and played by MUSICIANS who are masters of their trades, listen to some Opeth, Dark Tranqillity, older In Flames, At the Gates, etc... Leave the gore metal to the brainless tone-deaf Satan-wanabees.

Oh yeah.. you want evil? Listen to some Acid Bath. These guys will make your skin crawl without even trying. Unlike some other "really evil" bands.

Cannibal Corpse.....now I know these guys are supposed to be the next big thing in Death Metal, but honestly, this band is bad. Yes, the guitar solo's are good, the guitars are good, the drummer is alright, and as for the bass player, you could never hear him becasue of the guitars. There are too many times in their songs where they sound as if they're playing any random note or chord. Now don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of heavy metal...but this stuff is just horrible and stupid. How perverted are these lyrics....constantly talking about all of this gore crap in ALL of their songs? I mean ask yourselves, what is the point about CONSTANTLY singing about raping, tortuing, and beating women, killing people, ripping out people's insides, ripping off people's skin, talking about certain body parts, butchuring and killing babies, talking about maggots, venom, and death? (just to name a few of the VARIOUS gory topics they talk about) and just writing horrible music like that? I mean these guys think its cool and think it's a joke but it isn't. The guys from Cannibal Corpse keep talking in their interviews about how their lyrics aren't supposed to be taken seriously, but if that's true, then why are so many people mad about it? I thought heavy metal lyrics were supposed to be about your emotions and feelings, or about how you're angry at life, how you're sick of certain things. I thought lyrics were supposed to be meaningful. Cannibal Corspe is heavy no doubt about that, they're probably the heaviest band you'll meet. But I don't feel right listening to their songs, realizing that this is the stuff they talk about. You can be able to tell that this is a putrid band just by looking at the artwork on the CD cover or the song titles. But you know something, I think these guys are doing it just for the attention, to be honest. No one else has written these kinds of lyrics before, no one has made violent graphic disturbing artwork on a CD cover like this. I really think this is done only for attention. Everybody likes them because of how "cool" and "tough" Cannibal Corpse looks. Cannibal Corpse probably thinks that takling about beating women, killing babies, and all of that sort makes them look tough, and is a way of selling albums. Oh yeah, that's tough, but I bet that they never have the balls to do that in real life. It should be illegal to write music like this. Why write lyrics about things that happen in for other people's unfortune in real life? This stuff shouldn't be taken lightly and taken as a joke, it shouldn't. The band Cannibal Corpse has been a band for about over a decade, and made LOTS of albums, but the sad thing is, they haven't changed their lyric style AT ALL. A whole decade of nothing but "GRRRRR EEEEEEEE, smelling a girl's insides, it was so enchanting, EEEEEEEE, I raped her and then beat her on the head with shot gun, while masterbating to it, EEEEEE OOOOOOOOOOH, and it was exicitng, then I go outside, and see zombies, EEEEE, with venom and blood dripping from their heads, and maggots flying out of their skulss, EEEEEE then I hack out their brains then eat the brains, the gooey water flowing from their insides tasted good to me as I drunk it up, GRRRRRRR, OOOOOOOH, EEEEEE" in ALL of their songs. I mean how stupid is that. See, even I can write a Cannibal Corpse song, I just did when I just gave you that example. Seriously, anyone can just sit down and write gory scary lyrics like that, I bet even a 6 year old could do it. I mean I'd rather listen to Avril Lavigne than to listen to this. And their music is not THAT great. The solos are good, but just the music they play in general gets old after a while, becuase all of their songs sound the same and you can't tell the difference between any of them. This isn't good music at all. This band would be a whole lot better if it wasn't for the extremely perverted lyrics, and if they started being more organized with their music, becuase like I said, their are parts in their songs where it seriously sounds like they're just playing any random note/beat/chord. This is not worth your time listening to at all. Listen to some good metal bands like Lamb of God, Black Label Society, As I Lay Dying, Trivium, Rammstein, System of a Down, Static-X, Necrophagist, Mastodon, and the best guitarist ever, Jimmy Hendrix. Just don't waste your time on this...it's not music, just garbage.

The only beauty/talent expressed in this album lies in the evenness and precision of their unflagging rhythms. Other than that what could possibly be special about this album? The singing is just a broadband set of frequencies that lacks dynamic, melodic and rythmic (the singing only emphasizes the basic pulse) sophistication. The lyrics are corny (BTW just look...look at the names of the tracks, Frantic Disembowelment for example). The guitar plays almost-as-uninteresting things (playing in phrygian all the time gets old). The tracks lack variety.
I can see the general desire for angry music, but it should be seductive (I don't mean sexually), thus drawing people into it. The artists demonstrate a lack of understanding of music in general, theoretically and conceptually. Don't support filth like this. In three words - uninteresting, masturbatory hatred. Listening to this music will only make you a lesser person. You are not hard core for enjoying this, only tasteless.
