Amazon.com Depending on your sense of humor, William Hung's 15 minutes of fame on one 2004 episode of American Idol were either a joke or the high point of the show's season. Tone-deaf, karaoke-trained, and a far cry from the series' polished and trendy wannabe pop stars, Hung was booted halfway through his classic cover of Ricky Martin's "She Bangs." Inspiration, his first (and possibly last) CD, gives his legion of fans a chance to hear him in his entirety. Basically, it's Hung with karaoke background music, warbling through classics such as "Hotel California," "Rocket Man," and "Y.M.C.A." A few "inspirational thought" tracks are interspersed between the songs, giving you insight into the UC Berkeley student's self-confidence and enthusiasm. A bonus DVD even contains new footage and interviews of Hung in action. There are plenty of classic, imaginative novelty records out there--consider the Shaggs, Lucia Pamela, and Mrs. Miller--but this isn't one of them. Hung's backing music is too bland and, after a few tracks, the joke wears a little thin. But if you must hear more of this unlikely American Idol, here's your chance. --Jason Verlinde

Give Me a Break! April 16, 2004 67 out of 98 found this review helpful
The William Hung express ran out of momentum before it even left the station. Sure, he was a welcome bit of comic relief on American Idol, but do you honestly expect the American public to pay to hear someone sing badly when you can get it free any night at your local karaoke bar? During one of Hung's "inspirational" messages, he says "I may not be the best singer in the world, but I sing from the heart and I sing with passion...I just enjoy singing." Hey, buddy, so do I. And you know what? I sing even worse than you, so I limit my singing to the shower and in the car when I'm by myself. [I consider it a public service to humanity.]But hyping inept singers is nothing new. Anyone here old enough to remember Mrs. Miller from the late-Sixties? She was a middle-aged matronly housewife who butchered pop songs like "Downtown" and "Sweat Pea." And then there was a point when every celebrity on the planet thought he could be a rock star. Sebastian Cabot sang "It Ain't Me Babe." Jack Webb sang "Try a Little Tenderness." Leonard Nimoy sang "Proud Mary." William Shatner sang "Rocket Man." Hey...wait a minute! Hung sings "Rocket Man," too. Maybe these two guys should plan a summer tour together. They can bill themselves as The Captain and Schlemiel.

This man is a Genius. Either that, or he's mildly retarded. All I know is I bought his CD. And i'm ashamed of it. But deep down inside, "Inspiration, by william hung" changed me.
Worth every penny--he's good at what he does. April 7, 2004 35 out of 46 found this review helpful
Inspiration is worth every penny. You get what you expect, which is rare with prerecorded music these days. I read one other review where the guy says Mr. Hung butchers the song "desperado". He must butcher it pretty bad since it didn't even appear on my copy of this disc. William Hung is simply the man and this cd has it all: Club tracks, power ballads, and words of encouragment. "Shake your Bon-Bon" is, dare I say, better than the original and when William goes for the high notes in "I Believe I Can Fly" it is pure audio bliss. William Hung is living the dream on this disc and he is doing it his way. In the age of "keeping it real", William is as real as real can get. In these days of overslick pop and image driven p.r., there is something to be said for just being yourself. The DVD clocks in at over 35 minutes and this package is a flat out good buy. Even if you do not like William's vocal stylings, I will guarantee this set will put a smile on you face and keep it there for the duration. A war rages, gas prices soar, lots of things are off kilter in this world right now. A little "Inspiration" is in order and, at a list price of under $13, this is the steal of the ages. William Hung does his thing and he does it with gusto and bravado. Don't hate on Hung, because he clearly wants everyone to sit back and enjoy the show. And, it's a truly great show. VIVA WILLIAM HUNG!
Stop giving this fool money April 8, 2004 26 out of 61 found this review helpful

The joke's on me. April 6, 2004 20 out of 24 found this review helpful
I bought this CD as a joke because I really couldn't believe William actually was able to get a recording contract. Well, the joke is on me. When I heard "I Believe I Can Fly", I didn't hear a joke, I heard a man's soul and by the end of the song, I had tears. It made me realize something all of us want, but few obtain. A dream. William Hung believed he could fly, and not only does he fly, he soars. No, the vocal isn't pretty, but the soul behind that vocal is so pure, so honest it makes you believe you can fly too. When things get rough, I listen to a young man who is soaring higher than anyone ever believed, except himself. It is aptly titled.
