New Found Glory - Catalyst. August 12, 2004 lipgloss_and_letdown (Singapore) 28 out of 31 found this review helpful
*Note: I give this 3.5 stars I've been listening to New Found Glory for awhile now and to me, it seems after the selftitled, their sounds has altered. This record is more towards 'Stick And Stones' sound; a very polished sound. I can't explain it, but it seems all their things are standardized. There arent many of those super fast songs back in the 'Nothing Gold' and Selftitled era. Also, it might be me, or is Jordan voice higer pitched and nasaler on the newer records? But, having said that, this albums is filled of catchy pop songs, but at the same time, they really experiment a bit with more heavier sounds and even add a cameo of the amazing Reggie And Full Effect. You may be thinking, every band out there seems to be adding screaming to their songs, and NFG are just jumping to the bandwagon. Well your wrong, with Chad Gilbert the former frontman of hardcore legends Shai Hulud, screaming has always been part of NFG veins. Heres a rundown: 1. 'Intro' - Wow. New Found Glory are better then ever. I love this track to bits. Its fast, its loud, its awesome. I love it. It will make you move. 2. 'All Downhill From Here' - First single, everybody knows it. 3. 'This Diaster' - Another fast track, its a good song with yet another catchy chorus. 4. 'Truth Of My Youth' - One of my favorites. Its fast, its catchy, its good. The verse and prechorus are bound to make you move, and the chorus will kill you. 5. 'I Don't Wanna Know' - This is so different from any other New Found Glory track. I've never heard them like this before. Its slow, and features female vocals. A good song, but the chorus gets a bit annoying with Jordan nasal high pitched voices, and a chorus singing pattern that reminds me of a nursery rhyme. And the lyrics arent that special. 7. 'Doubt Full' - Typical 'new' New Found Glory. Good song, with a great chorus. 8. 'Failure's Not Flattering' - The song featuring the keyboardist of Reggie And Full Effect. Theres a new dimension with the keyboard, but i wish there was more keyboards in it. Good song, catchy as usual. 12. 'I'd Kill to Fall Asleep' - This reminds me of Something Corporate. The chorus is just "i'd kill to fall asleep" repeated. Its a nice song though. 13. 'No News Is Good News' - This song shows how New Found Glory have grown. The lyrics are more mature then ever, sounding even a little political. Good and catchy, and fast. 14. 'Who Am I' - A great closure to the record. The first few chorus's are just Jordan and a piano playing. Beautiful. Good song as well, and catchy. Overall, a decent record from New Found Glory, though im sure this will sleep on you quick. But its good while it lasted. It had some fun moments, some emotinal moments, and some filler moments. They have experimented succesfully, but they sort of played it safe. A better pick up would be the selftitled and 'Nothing Gold Can Stay'. But fans of 'Sticks And Stones' will like this.

Hey there, i've been an NFG fan for quite a few years. I really love this album!! I'm disappointed that all i can give them is 5 stars!! Every single song on this album is awesome, there aren't any fillers. NFG has grown lyrically, and musically. I actually like "Nothing Gold can Stay" better than I liked "Sticks and Stones" but i feel as if NFG found a good balance of both albums. I feel as if fans of both albums will be satisfied with "Catalyst" Buy it, check it out, it's amazing!!

This is a solid album.for the all the people saying to listen to "real music" such as the ramones, sex pistols, the clash, etc, People who claim NFG can't play and whatever else I question you. Have any of you, ever attempeted to play an NFG song on the guitar or bass or drums? earlier i too would have said to listen to "real music" but then found the tabs to "All downhill from here", and relized it's not a easy as it sounds. So before you go on saying NFG can't play i suggest you actully learn to play some of the songs first, then attack their simplicity. As for all the people who claim Jordan can't sing, i agree he's not the best singer, but neither was Joey Ramone, in fact his voice sounds the same on all the song. Don't get me wrong the ramones are a great band but how can you say NFG singer is terrible and then recomend a singer who isn't as good. if you don't like pop-punk don't listen to it, and don't review it. The people who are reeding the reviews are honeslty thinking of buying it, so your reveiws that have nothing to do with the album arn't doing anything. Anyhow this is a good album. it's catchy and got a lot of good songs, theres no bad songs on this album, but often i'm just not in the mood for one song. The Standout songs are: All downhill from here Faluire's not Flattering The Truth of My Youth Your Biggest Mistake At Least I'm Known for something ya so i'd give the album a spin in Amazon music sampler and if you like most of the songs then you'll probably enjoy the album if not whatever.
At this point, they're not capable of making a bad album February 1, 2005 Katie (CT) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
And although this is not their best work, it is far from even being mediocre. The band proved a long time ago that they know how to make awesome albums and Catalyst is just further proof of that fact. This CD showed the band branching out and experimenting with different sounds, but their signature formula is still evident and going strong. It's still the NFG that I've been in love with for years. 1. Intro- This short track is an awesome way to get things going and get you pumped for the rest of the CD. It hits you hard and fast, the pit goes crazy when they play this at shows. 2. All Downhill From Here- The perfect transition song fron Sticks and Stones to Catalyst. It's got some old flavor mixed in w/ the new and more complex sound. Just all around awesome, we've all heard it before. 3. This Disaster- This chorus is so catchy. It may seem like it could have come off Sticks and Stones, but there's the slightest difference in the sound that pinpoints it as a song off Catalyst. 4. Truth of my Youth- My favorite song off this CD and one of my favorites out of all songs by NFG. Cyrus Bolooki, the drummer, really shows off on this song. It's fast-paced and keeps driving until the last note. The lyrical content is some of Steve Klein's best. 5. I Don't Wanna Know- The softer side of NFG comes out on this one. Kendall Payne sings backup and all I can say is it's beautiful. You may feel like you want to skip this one, but I'm telling you not to ignore it. 6. Your Biggest Mistake- Time changes sometimes seem forced in some songs, but not in this song. It seems perfectly natural and the stride is never broken. You'll be humming this one for days. 7. Doubt Full- This song is awesome, there's no other way to put it. One of the lines is, "Sounds like I'm preaching the choir" and the vocals really make it sound like there is a choir. You can feel the sound of NFG surrounding you. 8. Failure's not Flattering- I've got one word for this song: eighties! It's definitely an 80s throwback and I love it. James Dewees of Reggie and the Full Effect plays the keyboard and you can't stop yourself from bobbing your head or tapping your foot, maybe even both at the same time. 9. Over the Head, Below the Knees- Heavier than the band has ever gone without qualifying as hardcore. It sets the mood for the serious lyrical content. 10. Ending in Tragedy- Although it may not seem to stand out from all their other material, you'll find yourself thinking about this song and wanting to hear it again. 11. At Least I'm Known for Something- A song that could only be by NFG. I love the message of the lyrics and the song itself will be stuck in your head for days. Chad Gilbert and Steve Klein's skills on the guitar seem to be showcased more than usual on this one. 12. I'd Kill to Fall Asleep- Another great song, but not my favorite. It sounds musically challenging without straying far from their signature sound. 13. No News is Good News- NFG's attack on the media. Actually, it's not really an attack as much as it is just a statement of opinion. It's got a great message and the awesome music to back it up. 14. Who Am I- The best closing song ever. It sounds as if it alternates back and forth between 2 songs. The lyrics really make you think and they're not that easy to figure out the first time you listen to the song. NFG is great at coming up w/ the best songs to close their CD's w/. There you have it. While the self-titled album still holds the dearest place in my heart, Catalyst is no run of the mill album that I'll forget about next year. So does NFG still have it in them to produce a great CD that doesn't get lost in the mix of albums released by current pop-punk bands that all seem to be the same thing? Of course. I wouldn't expect anything less from the band that sits at number 1 on my list of favorites.

For all of you "non-conforming"(haha...non-conforming...right: the punk and indie clicks are worse than mainstream and don't even realize this) "true punk fans" who think being punk involves bashing others and their tastes...last time I checked that was everything punk isn't morons. I don't like britney spears but i don't bash her. don't even review the cd if you haven't heard any of the cd. My pet peave is people who bash bands that get grouped into stupid genres. My fave band is Deftones and they are always being grouped into nu-metal which is not even close to their sound. NFG is the same. Go to a live show and experience an excellent band that really takes on influences from early tours with H20, Glassjaw, and Finch. And for the record, they are not like Blink at all. They don't write songs about kiddie things, many of their songs are applicable to everyday life for me and i'm 19. Pop-punk is my least favorite "genre" (if we need to go there), as my fave bands include deftones, thrice, thursday, refused, tool, glassjaw, etc. and NFG is right in there and are so much different than the likes of GC, simple plan, etc. (i can't stand much of that crap at all). If you sit down and listen to it w/an open mind you'll enjoy it as it's good music with some punk influence.
