    Editorial Reviews:

    Album Description
All sharp hooks and hefty beats, We Are Not Alone starts off with the Middle Eastern melody of the roaring lead single "So Cold," a riff-heavy track that showcases the fretwork of guitarist Aaron Fink, an expressive guitarist with a flair for both color and crunch. Employing a palette of quirky pedal effects, distorted textures and throttled power chords, he amplifies the emotion in each song, be it the confrontational rage in "Believe" or the sweeping emotional plea of "Break My Fall." "Aaron really stepped up on this record," says vocalist/guitarist Ben Burnely. "He's not so much a riff guy as someone who creates atmosphere. His talents really shine through here."

The perfectly paced album is anchored by the propelling rhythms of drums and bass as well as being driven by Burnley, who brings each melody to life with a voice that's both graceful ("Rain") and Godzillian ("Away"). He soars over the mile-high chorus of "Follow," delivering the insistent hook with unbridled passion and grit. "Touring helped develop my singing ability and allowed me to try new things on this record," he says. "It gave me a sense of confidence that was really liberating."

The band credit producer David Bendeth for the album's adventurous spirit, saying that he encouraged them to reach higher by digging deeper. "David has a great ear and helped pull better performances out of us," says Fink. "He also added a lot of flavor to the record. Unlike the first album, which was all bass, drums and guitar, this record is filled with all sorts of tasty ear candy. It's definitely headphones-worthy."

    5 out of 5 stars Breaking Benjamin Don't Miss A Beat   August 29, 2004

Breaking Benjamin seemed to come out of nowhere with their 2002 debut, "Saturate." Their seemingly effortless knack for combining larger than life riffs and beautiful melodies were enough to win over anyone who was willing to listen. And now, just two years later, they follow up with an album that, shockingly, improves upon what was already in place with their debut. Everything you liked about Breaking Benjamin is still here, just taken to the next level; The anthems are more powerful and the ballads more potent. The first single, and opening track, the slow-burning "So Cold" gets "We Are Not Alone" off to a good start, as all eleven tracks go by with ease. "Sooner Or Later," "Break My Fall" and "Simple Design" are the standard for Breaking Benjamin, heavy but sensitive, while other riff rockers like "Breakdown" and "Believe" take things up a notch. Also of note is the band's collaboration with Billy Corgan (Smashing Pumpkins/Zwan) on three tracks: "Follow Me" and the two stand-out ballads "Rain" and "Forget It." Maybe I'm biased, being a huge Smashing Pumpkins fan for so long, but these three songs are easily the high-points of an already incredible album. I really can't say anything bad about this release. Breaking Benjamin did nothing but improve. Their debut was extremely mature for a new band, and the fact that they can put out something even better for their sophmore release means that the next album from these guys will blow everyone away. If you loved their debut or just rock music in general, you owe it to yourself to pick up "We Are Not Alone."

    5 out of 5 stars Breaking Benjamin's Sophmore Album   June 28, 2005

Now this CD is just as good if not better than the debit album 'Saturate'. I'm an alt rock, heavy rock and nu-metal fan and this album 'We Are Not Alone' is a smashing hit. This CD has 1 flaw but the rest is refreshingly good. The first song 'So Cold is one of the best alt rock songs I have heard since Fuel's 'Bittersweet'. The video clip that is enhanced on this CD once you play it on your CD-ROM is breath-taking and a winner. I am now hooked on Breaking Benjamin and a fan. Wow. Another good song is 'Firefly' which is sung perfectly. The song 'Sooner or Later' was my personal favourite of this CD with a pure rock sound and the guitar in this song was exceptional. The only song I didn't like and I felt didn't suit this album was the last track 'Rain'. That was the only flaw in an otherwise wonderful sophmore album.

5 out of 5 stars This album is not alone by being a great album!!!   July 17, 2004

Breaing Benjamin did it again! They pulled off another great cd that is enjoyable to listen to and will get you to bobbing that head until you break your spine! There is only ONE ballad that I like very much and that is called "Forget It" and "Rain." The first single "So Cold" is also the first track kind of has you wondering at first where the rest of the cd is going. The song starts out mellow and then busts out with heavy riffs and you are just locked in! There is only one song "Firefly" that I feel by listening to it that the arrangements and vocals for the song were just thrown together at the last minute. But the rest of the album is well arranged, well vocalized, and well heavy! I really like most of the songs on the cd, "Firefly" is the only one I cringe to, but it is tolerable. It's hard to pick a favorite, but I seem to like "Sooner or Later," "Follow," and "Breakdown" the most. I reccomend this album to BB fans who have the first cd and is wondering, "OMG a second album, I bet it sucks!" Well, it doesn't, it is a great cd and well worth the money. SO BUY IT!!!!

1 out of 5 stars NO!! they certainly ARE NOT alone!!   January 5, 2005

The fact that I even have to write this is eternally frustrating:

Breaking Benjamin, admittedly, IS enjoyable on a certain level. This level is called ROCK. Because this album is full of rock music, I (and apparently MOST people as well) am instantly attracted to it. These boys have a WHOLE lot of talent and it WOULD be easy for me to fall right in line with everyone else and love these guys, just as I've done with other bands like Staind and Linkin Park.

But NO!!! There is something HORRIBLY WRONG here!!!! While it is absolutely obvious to me that Breaking Benjamin (like so many other bands) is trying with all of their might to be diverse and different, they still fail worse than any band I have ever heard in my entire life . . . except for Smile Empty Soul, and my own garage band fronted by yours truly. But that's another review entirely.

I have read about 70,000 reviews on this site that SWEAR Breaking Benjamin is the most original thing they have ever heard. And yet, not a SINGLE REVIEW can explain WHAT IT IS that makes it SO DANGED ORIGINAL!!!!!!!! Could it possibly be those AWESOME hard rocking guitar riffs that all retain virtually the EXACT SAME recycled, churning tempo, structure, sound, tone, feeling, and general CRAPPINESS????? Might it be the *AMAZINGLY* deep and emotional lyrical topics that deal with ANGER and DEPRESSION and FEELING BAD with NO deeper meaning beneath it all to give us SOMETHING to THINK about????? WOW, that's *INCREDIBLE*!!!!!!!!!

These songs are FRIGGIN catchy, no doubt, but BB is no NIRVANA or PEARL JAM or FREAKING TOOL, though some of you shmucks somehow seem to think otherwise. That's like saying Britney Spears was John Lennon's greatest influence. Each song is essentially the same thing over and over and over again in all aspects, be it churning tempo, structure, sound, tone, feeling, and general CRAPPINESS, to the suffocating point where you begin to realize that Breaking Benjamin has actually written ONE song, and then played it 10 more times because it worked so well the first time. The problem is, it hardly anything great to begin with.

Vocally, this band is a Nickelback. Musically, this is a Linkin Park crossed with Staind, the main difference being that _those_ bands created music that actually made me FEEL SOMETHING. Breaking Benjamin fails this in every possible way. The bottom line is, I *TRULY* HAVE HEARD about twenty other bands record this EXACT SAME album, and most of the time it was fifty times better (Nonpoint, for example). Folks, just because you may really really like something, DOES NOT in ANY WAY make it original!!!! I WILL NEVER EVER understand why people will listen to this and say `greatest album ever!', and then go and completely ignore a *MUCH* better band like Fuel. You guys are TOTALLY missing out on a *MUCH* more fulfilling musical experience.

At least Breaking Benjamin has the perfect title for this perfect pile of poop: "We Are Not Alone". No, they certainly ARE NOT ALONE. They honestly sound like everything else pumping out of my stereo. BUT, I WILL award the band 2 stars for making an old idea sound cool on the opening track `So Cold'. And oh, as much as I hated this album, it WAS better than "Saturate".

1 out of 5 stars Why is this happening?   September 6, 2005

Oh man you guys, this band rocks! I love the average, thick-fisted hard rock beats! I think the downtrodden lyrics are fantastic, even though I'm only fourteen years old and I've never heard bands like Smashing Pumpkins or Soundgarden say the same things with introspective, poetic substance!

I mean, that 'So Cold' song is totally SWEET, right?!?! I'll bet that even though Billy Corgan of the previously mentioned Smashing Pumpkins wrote this song with(/for) them, they could've made it sound just as original and haunting without him there at all! I'm sure I would still love this album even if Corgan's touch had been far, far away, doing something worth his and the music scene's while!

I'm so glad Breaking Benjamin has nothing that makes them stand out; how every song is the same thing; how the band can only make you feel one emotion or think one thing at a time. I love the standard riffs. I love Ben's soaring vocals! Oh man, I love bands with SOARING FREAKING VOCALS MAN! THEY SOAR!

I love how every song is in 4/4 time. I love how, outside of 'the Rain Song,' the tempo doesn't change. I love how the feeling is the same. I love how the band doesn't take you anywhere; how they just stir you up and let you settle, and how that accomplishes a great deal of nothing.

I like things that have nothing to them.

    * * * * *

[...]I want all of you to go and purchase "Superunknown" by Soundgarden for [...] at [...]. Listen to it, and tell me that a 72 minute album where songs average 5 minutes, using riffs built on 5/4 and 6/8 and 7/4 time signatures, played in guitar tunings that don't even exist, fronted by a vocalist who can hit notes higher than a [...] Mickey Mouse and yet encapsulate a power and beauty unrivaled by any other mere mortal, fueled by a guitarist who could play faster than Hendrix by the time he was THIRTEEN, and where every song is ALIVE and BREATHING and exists OUTSIDE of itself, outside of YOU...... after listening to all that, tell me that something like the superunknown and something like "We Are Not Alone" even belong in the same universe.

If you tell me that they do, I will vomit. Down your throat. And spit in it too. Because that is essentially exactly what Breaking Benjamin are doing to you. They are puking rehashed ideas into you're ears. The fact that you like it is the added aural bonus of a big wet lugey.

Please listen to Tool's lyrics. They are gutwrenching. They are weighty. They are landscapes of color and feeling.

Please ignore BB's lyrics. They are painful. They are sorrowful. They are a mess of scribbled crayon all over your face, and it doesn't become you.
