Amazon.com You hear a lot of echoes throughout Ashlee Simpson's Autobiography, but her big-eyed, bright-smiled sister Jessica isn't behind a one of them. That'll come as no surprise to fans and anyone who has caught the "darker" Simpson sister on MTV, which is responsible for hurtling the hard-edged "Pieces of Me" onto radio playlists across the country and creating a mini frenzy over this CD's content. Stoking the gossip-fueled flames is track three, "Shadow." On it, 19-year-old Ashlee spills her childhood resentment over her sister's attention-gulping career, ending up on a conciliatory note that has the surprising effect of making the Simpson divas' drama seem believable ("Everything's cool now
and the past is in the past," she sings). But serious music fans ought not to dilly-dally with the celeb stuff and dive right in, because this disc dishes up more than a lot of us bargained for. "LaLa" revs up the unsuspecting by way of out-and-out lustiness, "Love for Me" lays on the lovelorn angst thick, and the title track is a take-no-prisoners, love-me-or-leave-me rock anthem. Rippling throughout are cunningly malleable vocals, bending here for a kittenish Gwen Stefani effect, stretching there to sound Christina Aguilera-cathartic. Sweeter moments call to mind the indie sensibilities of Jill Sobule. More than others of her reality-show insta-star ilk, Ashlee Simpson's is an autobiography that shouts, "bring on the sequel." --Tammy La Gorce

GIVE IT TIME...SHE'LL GO AWAY. January 14, 2005 74 out of 98 found this review helpful
Just like so many other prefabricated pop artists (anyone remember Eden's Crush from back in 2001?...uh uh, thought so), she too will disappear in due time. We live in a disposable society in which, for whatever reason, Ashlee is the talentless hack du jour. But her time will come where the masses will have moved on to the next hot thing, hopefully one with more talent. Fret not fellow consumers, timing is everything.
By the way, I too find it funny that Ashlee thinks of herself as a free-thinking artist. If she had bothered to look at herself during certain episodes of her MTV show, she would have seen that she's nothing but money-making fodder for the record company. I mean, really Ashlee, do you seriously think a major record company is going to let you dictate how their money is going to be spent? It doesn't matter that you want a rock album; you're getting a pop album if that's what the company wants. Heck, they'd have you singing disco polkas if they thought it would sell by the millions. Wise up, girl, even you can't be that stupid.
More bubblegum trash January 5, 2005 53 out of 80 found this review helpful
After having endured the spectacle of Ashlee "performing" at the Orange Bowl (and receiving a thunderous barrage of well deserved boo's) it easy to see what Ashlee is - a packaged bubble gum queen with no musical talent whatsoever who was awarded a recording contract because of her name and her looks. There is nothing defensible in these songs, they are pure trash. This is just another example of Recording Company exec's hoping to score an easy buck on the backs of yet another teenage bimbo who can't sing, can't dance and can't write any remotely interesting songs. Its too bad young kids are spending their money on this junk. Hopefully Ashlee's 15 minutes are up.
Ashlee had no Backup Plan October 25, 2004 35 out of 43 found this review helpful
Ashley had no Backup Plan,
When you are Live on any show and if you use tape recorded clips for the entire band you better make sure the sound engineer has his or her act together. The entire band was strumming their guitars after the guitarist on the right hit an effects pedal. That pedal was not for effects, it is to turn on and off the music track already mixed from the studio. Not only was Ashlee faking her vocals, the band was faking the music. The only person who was microphoned live was the drummer. It's had to fake a drummer in a live audience and make it look real. If you look at the Bass player while he is playing, you can see that he runs his hand up and down the neck like he is stroking his chicken.
And when the guitar player on the right hits the pedal on the floor, you can hear the bands sound get loud and turn up the studio track.
I watched the SNL show and laughed at the skits, but the best, most funny was Ashlee dancing her "Hoe-Down".
Ashlee could have turned the entire episode into a funny skit. She could have said, OK, who is playing jokes in the back? Or something like that. The problem is, her Microphone was not even working because she was lip-sync.
If the band started playing the wrong song, most bands would just laugh and start playing the right song and start over. Since the entire show is a fake, the band has no guitar skills so they could not "Go Live". Not only does it show that Ashlee cannot sing, her band cannot even play the guitar, they are all "Props", like puppets. If any of those guys in the band have any talent, they will quit the band and join up with someone who can sing.
Anyone who plays the guitar knows you cannot jump up and down while you are playing because you will make mistakes. And strumming the guitar like a nut only shows how fake they are. Why does the guitar player on the left have a Gold Top Les Paul if he is not even playing it? The band should just sit down and play backgammon.
When Jessica sings she sticks out her Jaw and she looks like a chicken. When Ashlee (fakes it) it looks like she was Charlie Chaplin doing a silent movie. If you watch the video clip with the sound off, it does look like a Charlie Chaplin silent movie.
The best thing Ashlee can do now is the color her hair blonde again and change her name, and get a real band that can actually play music.
Bottom Line:
The Band is fake, Ashlee is fake.
Ashlee "Sold Out" her band in a heartbeat. The fur is flying. Heads will roll.
Monica was Bill's legacy, SNL is Ashlee's legacy. Especially the incredible Charlie Chaplin Footwork. Unsurpassed talent.
