Amazon.com You hear a lot of echoes throughout Ashlee Simpson's Autobiography, but her big-eyed, bright-smiled sister Jessica isn't behind a one of them. That'll come as no surprise to fans and anyone who has caught the "darker" Simpson sister on MTV, which is responsible for hurtling the hard-edged "Pieces of Me" onto radio playlists across the country and creating a mini frenzy over this CD's content. Stoking the gossip-fueled flames is track three, "Shadow." On it, 19-year-old Ashlee spills her childhood resentment over her sister's attention-gulping career, ending up on a conciliatory note that has the surprising effect of making the Simpson divas' drama seem believable ("Everything's cool now
and the past is in the past," she sings). But serious music fans ought not to dilly-dally with the celeb stuff and dive right in, because this disc dishes up more than a lot of us bargained for. "LaLa" revs up the unsuspecting by way of out-and-out lustiness, "Love for Me" lays on the lovelorn angst thick, and the title track is a take-no-prisoners, love-me-or-leave-me rock anthem. Rippling throughout are cunningly malleable vocals, bending here for a kittenish Gwen Stefani effect, stretching there to sound Christina Aguilera-cathartic. Sweeter moments call to mind the indie sensibilities of Jill Sobule. More than others of her reality-show insta-star ilk, Ashlee Simpson's is an autobiography that shouts, "bring on the sequel." --Tammy La Gorce

unbelievably bad January 6, 2005 A. Coleman (Winston Salem, NC, USA, Earth) 29 out of 29 found this review helpful
I can understand how middling performers insulate themselves with sycophants and yes-men so they become out of touch with their own relevance, but I am bewildered by all of the favorable reviews here! This young lady has mediocre talent at best, and anybody with a producer can sound OK with enough tweaking. But is this really the best we can do? People at the Orange Bowl were right to boo her. I saw her show on MTV & caught her talking about "Bible stories" (the storyteller was Jewish & trying to explain Yom Kippur). Ignorance may be bliss, but that was offensive. We are all dumber for having been exposed to Ashlee Simpson.
Ashlee Simpson has no talent. November 3, 2004 Average Joe (USA) 26 out of 27 found this review helpful
There are actually some music artists out there (mainly underground ones) who actually produce good music. They don't rely on their family member's success, they're not friends of another band to get signed, and they're not good buddies with the label. Those bands, or artists, actually play good music to get signed. True artists sure don't lip sing either, then blame it on their band or lie about an illness they have *cough acid reflex disease cough*. Ashlee Simpson was never a good artist, and she only became popular because Jessica Simpson is her sister (thus putting her into the spotlight), MTV played it all day (while the brainwashed masses ran to the stores to pick up tihs album immediately), and the radio stations and media didn't tell people that she has "talent" and that shes "punk" (actual quotes from an AOL music guide). Ashlee Simpson was always a truly bad artist with no real talent before, and only got signed because of the reasons I have already told you about, but now she just dropped the ball. She got CAUGHT lip singing, in public, on Saturday Night Live (SNL), then later on she blamed it on the band! She obviously coulden't think of a better excuse at the time, so after a few sleepless nights and worried filled nights, she told sources such as MTV and Yahoo! that she had acid reflex disease! Actually, she probably just paid someone like she does to write her songs! I bet she could never think of any of those lyrics herself, even though they aren't really that good and are not from the heart. Ashlee Simpson disgusts me, and even her band thought it was funny when she lip sung in public and was caught! This is whats truly wrong with the music industry today, and if you buy it, you are promoting a fake, a liar, and a truly horrible "artist". Thats my word.
the definition of lack of talent January 7, 2005 shortbear (St. Louis, MO) 24 out of 25 found this review helpful
if you look up no talent in the webster dictionary you will see a nice picture of ashlee simpson.
If you buy this album, you're only encouraging her! January 7, 2005 Josh Smith (Athens, GA) 24 out of 25 found this review helpful
Ashlee is your typical dime-store pop star and this album is hyper-produced. I sadly bought this trash on a whim because it was on sale. The tracks all sound alike. Ashlee is clearly trying to copy sound of Courtney Love from Hole. Sadly, she has no talent which shows through the album. The worst part is the tunes are catchy, so you embarass yourself at work or school singing them. We had to endure her struggling to sing each track on this album, in three-second clips at a time, on her MTV show. Then we had watch her get caught lip-syncing on Saturday Night Live because of, according to her, acid reflux! Then she got what was coming when she got booed following her unbelievably bad performance. DON'T MAKE YOURSELF ENDURE ANY MORE OF HER WAILING AND DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY!!!
Pathetic January 7, 2005 Amy (United States) 24 out of 25 found this review helpful
I am sick and disgusted with the state of the music industry. All these TV stars want to be singers. Ashlee Simpson can't sing live and she is a terrible performer. Maybe thats why the lip syncs, she sounds like a dying donkey when she sings. Did you see the Orange Bowl halftime? The was the worst vocal performance I have ever watched/heard in my entire life. It was so painful listening to Ashlee Simpson perform live.
