Amazon.com What's a woebegone wall-crawler to do? Arachnid-powered superteen Peter Parker's all-too-human foibles are never far from the heart of director Sam Raimi's second installment of the Spider-Man saga, giving it an emotional resonance that sets it smartly apart from its summer blockbuster competition. But while Raimi and star Toby McGuire help emotionally ground the film, its stunning CGI effects -- and this robust, aggressive orchestral score by Danny Elfman -- insure we never forget this is no mere soap opera. The composer returns with a vengeance to the larger-than-life, crowd-pleasing sensibility of his acclaimed work on Batman and its sequel, though he occasionally seasons it with sparing dashes of the post-modern flirtations of his Hulk score. Elfman conjures his formula masterfully, bookending a suitably moody, rhythmically anxious new theme for Dr. Octopus with a brassy reprise of villainy-past on "The Goblin Returns." Though leavened by more emotionally bright passages, it's a score largely dominated by the dark, brooding comic book melodramatics that are the favorite of so many Elfman acolytes. --Jerry McCulley

Short and Sweet and now I know why August 9, 2004 Anthony Thurman (The United States) 9 out of 10 found this review helpful
I recently purchased a copy of the Spider-man 2 score. By the way, it was hard to find a copy in my city, but I eventually picked up one in Chicago. The CD is really nice with a lot of what I heard in the theater except a few cues that were used in some key moments of the film. Some of these cues are the unveiling of Doc Ock's machine (the one with all the choral sounds), Peter trying to deliver his pizzas on time, and all the cool cues we heard during the train fight/train stopping sequence. I knew this was the case before I bought the CD, but was still a little disappointed even after I bought it anyway. I'm not disappointed I bought the CD, just disappointed that I can't hear those cool music cues on my home speakers. I wondered what the reason for leaving such great song moments off the CD was and then I read a Film Music site and it explained that during post production, some of the movie was re-edited and that Danny Elfman was more than likely busy working on another project by then and they needed a few parts of the movie to be rescored. These parts that were rescored were done by John Debney and Christopher Young. That's the reason they call tracks 10 and 11 bonus tracks because they're the original score that Danny Elfman had planned on being used in the edit of the movie that he saw. They didn't put the new rescored tracks on the CD since Elfman wasn't responsible for those. Well, hopefully they'll put an isolated music track on the Spider-man 2 DVD when it comes out.
Replacement cues January 1, 2005 Elastic Planet (Los Angeles, CA) 9 out of 10 found this review helpful
This is a good Elfman score, but I wished they included the replacement cues written by Christopher Young, John Debney, and Joe LoDuca. Christopher Young wrote the train scene music for those of the other reviewers wondering why that track was not included on the CD. On the one hand, it's interesting to hear the original score and try to guess why Sam Raimi didn't like it. On the other, it would be nice to have the music that was actually used in the film. (note: Young, Debney, & LoDuca are not listed in the credits, but are in the crew list on the IMDB)
Great score!!! July 17, 2005 Spider-man freak 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
This score wasn't just beautiful music, it also puts you in the mood of superhero's. The beginning theme is probably the best. I was suprised to find that the next one after that,(2), is also very well done. Peter Parker's theme with Aunt May is also very nice. #9 and #10 are also very good themes and have alot of action music in them. The last theme, #14, is also one of the best on the cd. And of course, there's #15, Raindrops keep falling on my head, which is a true classic. All in all, I'll say that this cd is definately worth buying. My only complaint would be that it is too short. But trust me, buy this cd if your a true fan of Spider-man!! ;)
No new Batman, but very close August 1, 2004 G. Kroener (Bamberg, Bavaria Germany) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Danny Elfman is still the man to approach when you're making this kind of movie; he's the number one, even before John Williams, and he clearly proves it in Spidey 2.
Elfman uses the same themes he composed for part one, and it would have been foolish not to do that.
There are many parts I really love. The main titles, of course, but also Doc Ock's theme and music. "Angry Arms/Rebuilding" brings back the wonderfully light, Edward Scissorhands-style choir. The string glissandi are a fantastic addition and create a feeling of mean deceptiveness and seduction, used for Ock's mechanic arms.
I especially welcome the return of the Goblin's music in "The Goblin Returns".
Spidey's theme is used a lot more in this one, and also in different ways.
So many good things to say about this score, so why only four stars? Well, as other reviewers mentioned before, there's about 50 % of the score missing. I really don't get it; they release a Soundtrack with some songs, that don't even refer to the film, one months before the movie, and they release a score album one months AFTER the movie with only 45 minutes. Where's the point? Another thing I don't understand is why they labeled tracks 10 & 11 as bonus tracks. They're in the movie, aren't they?
Good score-better movie July 29, 2004 Travashamockery (Moore, OK) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
It's sad when such an amazing score gets brutally whittled down in its transition from theatre to cd. There is alot that is noticeably missing (and I am sure even more than I am aware of). The scene where Peter delivers the pizza and Doc Oc unveils his machine have been eliminated completely, and the train scene has lost some choir work that would have made it the best cue on the cd. As it stands, the CD is still very good despite these faults, and the fact that there is less than 45 minutes of score music on the cd. The CD could have easily competed with "Batman", but instead we are left with a good, but not great cd.
