5 out of 5 stars One of the best albums of all time   August 10, 2004

Not only is this probably the best release of 2004, it's also one of the best I've ever heard. Empiricism was an awesome album too and they expand upon the sound heard on that album. Vintersorg is even better on this album and gots a less operaic sound than last time, much more memorable though. Whenever I listen to this the vocals get stuck in my head the rest of the day. Where I almost want to shoot myself when I have the misfortune of getting Britney Spears or something else I accidently heard stuck in my head, I almost enjoy this because its' memorable without being cloying or irritating. Vintersorg also shows off his death metal growl in addition to his black metal one. Otherwise it's pretty much in the same direction as Empiricism except not as much (though still quite a bit) emphasis on the keyboards. As for whether they've gone more mainstream or not, I can't really say yet. Some of the songs seemed to be devolping upon their more gothic influences heard on the last couple songs of Empiricism, while some seem to be going in a much harder direction. Still easy recognizable as Borknager and should please most fans except those who like absolutly no change. If you enjoy symphonic, keyboard driven extreme metal you've got to get this. Also check out Vintersorgs solo project, Ram-Zat, Agathodaimon, and Darzamat if you have the time.

3 out of 5 stars Borknagar could do much better   August 23, 2004

I'm a big fan of Borknagar and own The Olden Domain, The Archaic Course, Q and Emperism. I was really excited when I purchased Epic. While I enjoy the vocals of Vortex and Garm, I really liked the vocals of Vintersorg on Emperism. I just don't care for the clean vocals and musical structures on Epic, but that is not the only complaint I have with this release. When I listen to Epic I feel like I know what's going to happen before it happens. The musical change of pace and vocal changes seem very repetitive. I love the actual music with all its wonderful layers of melodies, but the formula never changes from start to finish (slow passage - fast passage and clean vocals - Black Metal vocals). After awhile this becomes very boring. The clean vocals on Emperism were much more appealing to me as well. Don't get me wrong, there are some very good songs on Epic, but I would still suggest getting the older albums over this one if you don't already have them.

    2 out of 5 stars meh...   August 25, 2004

borknagar have always been one of those bands, while they are talented and vary their sound from album to album, never really seem to release anything that you will go back to over and over again. Q is really the only borknagar album i enjoy while only disliking 2 or 3 songs.

don't get me wrong, vintersorg is an amazing vocalist and i love his work with borknagar, and the musicians (especially the drummer) can obviously play, but the problem is that they seem so focused on creating "epic" songwriting, that most of their songs come off as completely boring. what i usually find is that the first 2 or 3 songs are really strong and i can go back and listen to them over and over, but the rest of the album just seems lost and boring. epic is no exception, in fact, sometimes many of the songs seem to blend together, which is nothing i would expect from borknagar.

as much as i really want to like this band and "epic", i can never get past 'traveller.' if you are a hardcore borknagar fan, you'll probably dig this, but i think this is a step back from their past works.

2 out of 5 stars A good band that pulls too hard in both directions...   September 2, 2004

All these guys have the talent. Vintersorg has an amazing voice, he truly makes my skin crawl in the screeching and his singing is a blinding sunlight from the despairing storm. I really can't stomach the unnecessary double bass blast beat druming that is carried out through the album. Its overkill and doesn't flow with the melodies. Rather, it conflicts with the keyboards and the riffage. With this being said I would much rather listen to EMPIRICISM or ARCAIC COURSE (with Vortex of Dimmu Borgir on vocals.)

4 out of 5 stars YES!!!! A RETURN TO THE TRIUMPHANT SOUND!!!!   November 30, 2005
2 out of 4 found this review helpful

4 stars is a great album. an album that i'd love to be listening to at almost any time.
5 is reserved for very few albums. "Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk" by Emperor, With Fear I Kiss the Burning Darkness" by At The Gates, and "The Archaic Course" by Borknagar are three.
This album is better than Empiricism by leaps and bounds, but is still inferior by a great degree to The Archaic Course and The Olden Domain. It could be said to be on par with Quintessence, but is a highly different album.
The biggest difference is the guitar and synthesizer. The overall sound of the guitars is much much tougher than Empricism. While there are some flute synths and other stuff like that that you wouldn't call Metal, they are tucked away in places that actually make sense.
BUT BEYOND ALL THAT, The melodies and riffs for the songs are highly memorable, even amazing and incredible. Several of the songs are a great mix of Hard fast guitar playing with other more melodic parts. Many bands strive for a good mix of that, but Borknagar has such great success because of the quality of the guitar riffs and backing synths, in the heavy parts, and the inventiveness of the melodies in the melodic parts.
Vintersong's singing is a little less in your face in this song, and fits better with the overall feel. His style for this album is still his own, but it blends better. Relate (Dialogue) is a good example of his range and depth.
I don't know how the album is lyrically, because after Empiricism I vowed never to read the lyrics to a new Borknagar album, for the most part I haven't heard anything too bad, and have heard a few good things.
In Conclusion if you loved Borknagar, but hate empiricism, BUY THIS ALBUM.
