Not A Dance Album October 18, 2004 8 out of 14 found this review helpful
So yeah, you hear "Gia", and "Opa Opa" and you're convinced this Greek vixen is the next dance diva. Or...not. A lot of her double CD sounds like traditional Greek music...no thumping dance beats, no synths..."real" instruments, and a very typical Greek swagger. The album boasts only two english tracks..."Gia" and "Opa Opa" (which later are also in Greek)
Not that there's anything wrong with this. The album itself is good, but my rating is low based on dashing of expectations.
If you're looking for a dance album, don't pick this up. If you're looking for a decent album that expresses the country the singer is from, perhaps think about getting Despina Vandi. It's definitely interesting.

What is Greece offering next to the world? After successfully hosting the Olympic Games and mesmerizing the world with the opening ceremony show, the follow-up comes in the form of a greek goddess of pop, Despina Vandi. A double CD entitled "Gia" which was also the title track to catapult her into the international scene. 24 songs in total ranging from pure pop, to beautiful ballads to soft rock, as well as her signature hip-shaking oriental beats. The music and atmosphere of the cd really stands out from anything out there in the market. There are only two english songs on the album, Gia and Opa Opa(which is the 2nd single), the rest are all greek. However, the real essence of the songs are captured in the music which are masterpieces all penned by Greece's no.1 hitmaker, Phoebus. In other words, you dont need to be greek to enjoy this CD. I dont speak or understand a word of spanish, but i still go out and buy every cd that Juanes puts out (which I think are amazing). So if u r looking for something different, with more heart and humaneness, then this goddess from the meditteranean is your answer! Favourite songs: 'Gia' (Hi), 'Opa Opa', 'Lathos anthropos' (Wrong Person), 'Thelo na se do' (I wanna see you), 'Olo lipis' (You're always away), 'Ola odighoun se sena' (everything leads to you), 'Anavis foties' (firestarter), 'Deste mou ta matia' (blindfold me), 'Marameno' (withered) and my alltime favourite 'Ela' (Come).
She's meant to have an international career, u know... April 19, 2005 7 out of 12 found this review helpful
" Gia " , one of the best-selling albums in Greece for the last decade , is a rather shallow proposition . Intesively promoted by Greece's largest record company , the record displays an obvious lack of any kind of personallity in Vandi 's music .
All tracks here are written and composed by one man , high-profiled Foibos who has been supplying easy listening pop tracks to two dozen other young greek artists. That fact alone displays an essential problem of the greek music scene : how can one songwritter maintain a creative relationship with so many perfomers all at once . The answer is he can't and the listener can sense that while listening to the various offerings of Mazonakis , Lebesis , Kokkinou , Tsalikis and others . His ideas feel recycled , his copying of foreighn hit singles is embarrasing , his lyrics never concern something more than boyfriend troubles .
Vandi herself doesn't help the situation improve . She keeps chasing after high notes , often shouting instead of singing . Her style and singing technique are way too similar to Anna Vissi's ones - it makes you wonder if there's any kind of artistic ambition in her at all .
Gia's strength is suppose to be it's dance-tracks . The tittle track sounds a bit exotic and at least not as irritating as other past hits of hers like Ipofero while Anavis Foties screams 'copy of some syrian or lebanese or (anyway )arab number one song of tha last few years' . The slow compositions also fail with Thimisou pretentious drama being a characteristic example .
Gia is not the first nor the last bad pop album to be released and Vandi is not the worst singer in the country yet one thing is for sure : she is the most artificial one . How can a woman with so unspectacular talents be one of the Greece's most famous ones is a question still looking for an answer .

World Class Greek Trance-Dance Pop perfection!!! April 3, 2005 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Man, am I glad I 'discovered' this artist! This flirtatious young lady selling Greek music at our annual Greek Church festival enthusiastically recommended this CD. Despina Vandi is a beautiful, versatile vocal powerhouse that can belt it out with the best of world class divas! This is a very tasty, well arranged and produced CD with catchy, original songs. She also showcases her great vocal range on some of the more traditional and slower Greek songs. After listening to this CD, all I can say is I definitely WANT MORE!!! If you're into great contemporary Greek music, this should be in your collection. Despina Vandi is without a doubt, a 'breath of fresh air' and an asset to Greece's music scene.
