Even when Hilary Duff is at her most un-Lizzie McGuire-like, it's impossible not to like her, as she proves on this reinvention-themed, girl-grows-up album. Free her from the constraints of the teen-queen slumber party scene and she'll crank up the guitars and "Fly," as she does on the feel-good first single; give her a minute to reflect on life as a multi-hyphenate (in her case TV princess-movie star-pop goddess) and she'll come clean with "Underneath This Smile," an introspective winner not lacking--and yet not reaching--for sunshine, or "Who's That Girl," an unapologetic embrace of self-contradiction. Songwriters Diane Warren ("I Am") and Charlie Midnight, whose contributions to Duff's last album don't seem so yesterday as yet, pitch in, as does Hilary's star-in-her-own-right sister Haylie (the boyfriend-blasting "Mr. James Dean"). If there's evidence of the mixed-up lovable kook millions of teens once modeled themselves after here, it is only in the title: Hilary Duff may be the follow-up to the 5 million-selling Metamorphosis, but the real metamorphosis for Miss Duff takes place here. --Tammy La Gorce

4 out of 5 stars A notch behind Metamorphosis, but still good   December 27, 2004

While Hilary Duff's sophomore album is a notch below her wonderful first effort, it still has some gems on it, and is overall a quality CD that is worth owning if you are a fan of Hilary or of the teen pop sound.

The strongest songs are ones from her movie, "Raise Your Voice"-"Someone's Watching Over Me" and "Jericho." Both have beautiful melodies that are very well suited to Hilary's voice (she does much better with the sweet ballads than with the harder rock and roll stuff), and inspiring and upbeat lyrics.

Other good songs on this album include "Fly" (a higher energy song, like "So Yesterday" from her first CD. But which is still melodic enough to work well with her voice), "Do You Want Me?," "I Am," and "Underneath this Smile" (all of which address in some way the paradoxes and contradictions that are part of being human...and especially a part of being a teenager), and "Shine" (another one that is more towards a rockish sound, but still slow enough to work for her...nice lyrics about the power of true friendship to raise our spirits).

There are a couple songs that I have to skip over because they're a bit unpleasant to the ear: "Mr. James Dean" and "Haters." These songs pull Hilary out of the style that works so well for her, and she yells more than she sings. I'm not a big fan of this style with anyone singing it, but it works particularly poorly with Hilary. The lyrics of these songs, too, are more petty and trite than the others. Still, the rest of the album is strong enough to overcome these two.

    4 out of 5 stars A Much Better effort.   January 7, 2005

Hilary Duff's sophmore album does have its ups and downs however this album shows growth in many ways.
Overall the song choice is better than her first. You will never convince me that this is a more "rock" album as it is simply a fun pop cd. She has decided to make music that it seems she enjoys rather than what the average viewer of her tv show might enjoy, while not abandoning that audience.
There are far less computer effects and alterations on this album than on the first. Hilary is not a great singer. On her first album this was hidden under layers of touch ups. On this album, you can tell she worked on her vocals and the result is an album where we finally hear her sing without many aids. There are a few bum notes even on the album, but that is a far better way to go than the way of her former album.
As I said the song selection is superior. The true standout track for me and it seems many other reviwers is "The Getaway". This song is the best so far in her short career. Its is catchy and somewhat raw. Very enjoyable. I also enjoy "Weird" for its over the top chorus and overall likablity. The dramatics of "Who's That Girl" are very good as well. Maybe having an acteress sing is a good thing. She can make you feel. Other highlights include "Rock This World" and the much hyped "Haters."
I would say fans of Hilary are constantly growing. And she seems to be growing with them. I dont see any reason that she can not transition from tween sensation to a true pop star for all ages.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing. Incredible. Perfect.   October 11, 2004

Hilary Duff's follow-up to her multi-platinum Metamorphosis is much different from its predecessor. It's also about 10 times better.

Unlike Metamorphosis, the songs on Hilary Duff are much more mature. Hilary actually found time to co-write some of the songs herself. Unlike Metamorphosis, where each song was all positive, happy, and had such a "life is wonderful" feel to them, the songs on her new album relate much more to the real world, which isn't all sunshine and rainbows. Some of the songs are about heartbreak, some are positive love songs, and some just talk about everyday situations that everyone deals with. The songs are very well-written, as opposed to the songs on Metamorphosis, where some of the songs had some very amateur lyrics to them.

Among the album's whopping 17 tracks, my personal favorites are Do You Want Me?, I Am, The Getaway, Haters, and Rock This World. Most of the songs have a heavy-rock feel to them. Thus, I believe it would make sense to classify Hilary's music as Pop-Rock, since that's basically what it is. No, she is not turning into Avril Lavigne... she's just getting older.

The songs on the album are very meaningful and many will find that the songs relate to them, regardless of age or gender.

Nonetheless, this album was truly worth the long wait.

1 out of 5 stars WHAT THE FREAKING HELL!!!!!!   October 23, 2004

I can NOT believe she released a 2nd album. What a waste of plastic! It's sad, she can't sing for crap, and the recording people give her a contract because she's a freaking ACTRESS, and she's not even that good. She must need about 5,000 computers to cover her awful voice, and it's still really bad and it sounds processed. She makes more that a million dollars a year for being terrible, but what about the really wonderful singers who are hardly ever noticed because they didnt recently work for Disney? Those singers actually HAVE TALENT and work for peanuts! I don't know what the hell is the matter with society today, but one thing wrong is this. She is NOT a good role model for kids, the lyrics are retarded (she didnt even write them), she cant play an instument for crap (she probably cant even spell instrument), and look at the cover on this CD. She looks like a caveman...and she looks like she is mentally ill. Say NO to this review, I don't care, as long as you say NO to this Cd. This CD is like drugs: stay away from it! Use your $14 or whatever for food, clothes, whatever, anything BUT THIS CD!!!

PS I did listen to the album. That was the most torturous hour of my life.
