Amazon.com A treasure-trove for Dream Theater fans, Live at Budokan presents an entire three-hour performance at Tokyo's famed Budokan arena on April 26, 2004, along with a bonus disc rich in supplementary material. Disc 1 finds the metallic progressive-rock quintet at its awe-inspiring best, plowing through its catalog of dramatic epics and jack-hammer instrumentals, including five of the seven songs from 2003's Train of Thought. Disc 2 features an extended drum solo from percussionist extraordinaire Mike Portnoy; gear tours from guitarist John Petrucci and keyboardist Jordan Rudess (fascinating for lay people and downright revelatory for musicians); and a half-hour documentary on DT's 2004 stint in Japan punctuated by tantalizing snippets of band rehearsals. The shooting and editing for the concert are a music lover's dream, with lengthy shots that linger on the performances of individual band members. Disc 2 takes this even further with a multi-angle sequence of the 12-minute "Instrumedley." Production values are extremely high: it's a widescreen presentation shot on high-def video and nicely mixed for multichannel Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound (with a thinner, collapsed version of the same for Dolby 2.0). It must be noted, however, that the center, subwoofer, and surround channels get jumbled right at 1:35:30 on disc 1. The front left/right channels remain in place, but the signals for the other four speakers play non-musical chairs. People listening in 2.0 will experience a brief dropout at that point. --Michael Mikesell

If you will only buy 1 Dream Theater DVD, GET THIS ONE! December 19, 2004 23 out of 26 found this review helpful
this DVD show Dream Theater (DT) live at the historical japanese avenue, the Budokan, at their finest. i think DT have taken their music at another highest after having Rudess on keys, he is much more than just a keyboardist, combining speed, technique, musicality, together with Petrucci, Portnoy and Myung, they expanded their musical level to somewhere that no one had done before. and this DVD show what the best the fivesome can probably do (not the last one, Metropolis 2000, though that feature Rudess as well but the whole DVD is badly produced).
the concert footage consist of 18 songs, 5 from the lastest ablum "Train of Thought" (As I Am, This Dying Soul, Endless Sacrifice, Stream of Consciousness and In the Name of God), and some old stuff, also a new "Instrumedley", a combination of some their highly technically instrumental medley from their old songs, neck-breaking solo, breathe-taking unison, head-turning drum works, what else can i say about this... i really can't find one second from the performance that's not satisfying, their performance is no doubt at their finest.
and on disc 2, you'll be amazed that they are much more that a player/musician, they have so much knowledge on their instrument, Rudess's "turnable" keyboard setup is mind blowing, he even considered about the emergency power supply, and Petrucci's guitar setup is just as stunning, he take care of his instrument to a very subtle detail, not to mention Portnoy monster drumkit and his drum solo......
DT is no doubt one of the most influential band nowadays, not only because their superb music and musicianship, but also on their devotion on their instruments, fans and the business as well... this DVD will become one of the classic live DVD of all time, don't miss it!!
Another superb Dream Theater release! October 12, 2004 20 out of 25 found this review helpful
Do these guys every stop getting better? I've been a Dream Theater fan since I heard "Metropolis Part 2: Scenes From A Memory." This band is utterly amazing. The technical brilliance of this band is not of this world. The sheer power and beauty of their music lies within the hands and hearts of four memebers: Mike Portnoy, John Petrucci, John Myung, and Jordan Rudess. James LaBrie's singing, in my opinion, is just a diversion. NO OFFENSE TO ANYONE WHO LIKES JAMES!!!! I like his singing, but I think he's there to satisfy those fans who believe you must have vocals in the music for it to be music. Oh, how stupid people are.....just kidding!
Anyway, on with the review of this concert DVD. This DVD absolutely smokes!!!! From start to finish, this DVD is jaw-dropping. I think the whole concert is very well done and put together. The audio and video are tight. Very crisp picture and audio. Good seperation of the instruments, which I'm very happy about.
The content of this DVD are also something that any DT fan should get excited about. One true highlight for me was the "Instrumedley," which absolutely blew me away. Dream Theater are probably one of the best bands I've ever heard. I mean I rank them up there with other progressive giants like Genesis, Yes, and King Crimson. These guys can pull out all the stops in the studio and live. They are a fantastic live band.
The bonus material is also worth watching. There is a very cool documentary of the band on tour in Japan. John Petrucci, Mike Portnoy, and Jordan Rudess take us into their worlds and show their equipment setup. There's also an interesting video history of the band that takes us back to the beginning where it all began!
This DVD is inspiring and at the same time makes me realize that these musicians are some of the best in the world and anyone who don't know who they are need to pick this DVD up.
Did ppls rated it 5 stars actually see the DVD October 13, 2004 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
My rating is for the show... for the 5 great guys in the band... but not the greedy record company and the worst DVD production team.
The production is crap regarding 5.1 surround sound. The half of show after "New Millenium" is unbearable. It seems that the DVD mess up with the 5.1 channels. How come there is major sound problem for a concert DVD? Did the production team really see/listen the DVD sample before mass production?
I just wonder why it is still selling and not recalled. I really warn you not to buy this crap before record company fix the problem. BTW, I suggest to mail back the flewed disc to record company after u get the new version.... hope it will go stright to the responsible person....
Truly Incredible! October 6, 2004 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
This DVD tops them all for a live concert release. I am a huge DT fan and this DVD truly blew me away. It is light years ahead of their previous DVD releases. The technical ability of the band just never stops getting more and more ridiculous. All five of the band members display on this concert that they are at the top of their respective musical classes. The song selection is excellent. The video quality is superb along with the sound quality. I have noticed that in the last year or two, James Labrie's voice has gotten much better. He seemed to get tired on the last few concert dvds and started missing a lot of high notes about half-way through the concert. At Budokan, his voice is actually better live than on some of the studio recordings! Very passionate singing, great range, and knows when not to overdo it. If you are even a quasi Dream Theater fan, you MUST get this DVD. I promise, it will blow you away. DT is at its zenith.
Dream Theater : "Live At Budokan" March 31, 2006 6 out of 8 found this review helpful
Let me start by saying this. I'm not a huge DT fan, in fact I only really like one of their CD's{"Images & Words"}. I've tried buying and listening to other releases, but none of them really turned me on much. That said, I never gave up on DT because I respect them as creative muscians, and they are an incredibly talented group....
The CD that really steered away from these guys was "Scenes From A Memory". Although interesting and creative in it's own way, it just didn't do anything for me overall. Even the DVD for the "Scenes" tour was mediocre considering what this band is capable of....
Well onto the review shall we???
"Live at Budokan" really took me by surprse, and this is the Dream Theater I was expecting to see on the "Scenes" DVD. This is so much better than "Scenes". The quality, the bigger production, and the sound is just spectacular. It seemed like more of a natual setting for DT, and they really played an almost flawless show on this night....
"Live At Budokan" simply smokes. I'm so glad I never gave up on Dream Theater because this is what true musicianship is all about. Highly Recommended......
