Amazon.com Not only does Jessica Simpson know how to light up a room (and a TV series, various awards shows, and a flurry of magazine covers), she's also got a gift for warming up rooms. If you have yet to feel the heat, look no further than Re-Joyce, on which things get roasty-toasty in the space of a few tracks. Simpson's is a crooning style that's carol-ready--she toboggans her way through opener "Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow" effortlessly enough to make us wish we were riding shotgun; vamps it up on "Baby It's Cold Outside," a duet with husband Nick Lachey; and pounds out the rum-pa-pum-pums impressively with sister Ashlee on "Little Drummer Boy." On more heartfelt numbers like "O Holy Night" and "What Child Is This" the odd vocal quirk that makes it sound as though she's choking back a song rather than singing it surfaces, and at times her singing is a little too Amy Grant-clean, but on balance Re-Joyce, named for Simpson's late grandmother, supplies welcome kindling in a winter wonderland overgrown with deadwood. --Tammy La Gorce

Re-Joyce is proof that they don't make divas like they used to. This is a flat and spiritless Christmas release with tired vocals. Even with a somewhat joyful track "Baby, It's Cold Outside" with hubby Nick Lachey in the Easy Listening mode, this album cannot carry itself. This album - named after Jessica's late grandmother - tries to be cute but comes out empty and sordid, much like its artist.
Trying Too Hard, but Decent Christmas Album. November 23, 2004 35 out of 44 found this review helpful
I've always been a fan of Jessica Simpson, and have always thought she was a wonderful singer. However, lately she has gotten in the habit of singing in a breathy child-like voice, riffing way too much, even for her, and not announcing her consanants. She continues this on her new Christmas album. I wish she would just sing these classic Christmas songs they way they were suppose to be sung. I truly believe she has an amazing voice and she would be so much better if she didn't over do everything. On a positive note, she does have some of my favorite Christmas songs on here and they are the strongest songs on the album. She goes all out for O Holy Night, turning in a rich powerful vocal performance. What Child is This is stunning, and Hark the Herald Angels Sing has a gospel choir backing which adds alot to the song. She does sound like shes having fun on such tracks as Let it Snow and I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus. Her duet with Nick, Baby It's Cold Outside, is OK but nothing memorable. She also does a duet with sister Ashlee, and surprisingly the two's voices blend well together. Finally, there is one song that I've never heard before. Breath of Heaven. It's a beautiful song. I do recommend this for Jessica Simpson fans, but if you're not, then I'de look for something else.

Unless you're a Jessica Simpson fan who must own everything she appears on, I suggest skipping this CD. Jessica has a good voice when she decides to really sing, but like her last CD, here she has decided to forego real singing and opted instead to do whispery, breathy, childish, trying-to-sound-sexy interpretations of her songs. That may work in pop music, but it is the opposite of the way classic holiday songs should be song. It is obvious that Mrs. Simpson has no idea of the meaning and emotion that underlies these classics. O Holy Night in particular is just an atrocious rendition. On more lighthearted fare such as "Let It Snow" she does an OK if rather unremarkable job, which is the reason I gave her two stars instead of just one (I would really have given it 1.5 stars), but the more solemn songs are destroyed almost beyond recognition, and the duet with her sister is particularly cringe-worthy.
If you absolutely adore Jessica Simpson, then this may be for you. If you're looking for a classic Christmas CD or a fun holiday album for the whole family to enjoy, you should save your money and buy something else instead.
Pathetic December 3, 2004 21 out of 38 found this review helpful
This is such a lame excuse for an album. All this idiot does is cash in every opportunity she can and she has proven herself to be the most useless and least credible "artist" in the industry. Once "Newlyweds" is over, her career will be too.
Christmas music to strip by... November 23, 2004 20 out of 27 found this review helpful
JSimp's breathy voice evokers cozy nights at Shaker's, cuddled next to your favorite scantily-clad companion.
Just what Christmas is supposed to be? I think not.
These overly sexualized tracks kill the beauty of these holiday favorites. Christmas music should be pretty, or moving, not scandalous. Her hubby Nick sounds great on "Baby, It's Cold Outside"; however, they don't strike the balance of the male voice persuading the female to not leave so quickly. Instead, the producers (probably under duress from freaky Pa Simp) make JSimp's voice louder and more promounced, practically drowing out Nick. Sad but true.
Oh, and she breaths something out with Ashlee, who was no doubt doing a hoedown dance in studio while recording. Sigh.
Get Mariah Carey, Jewel, or something classical this season. Not. This.
