If Nirvana's Nevermind heralded alternative's ascendancy into the mainstream, Creed's mega-successful 1997 debut showed just how quickly--and craftily--alt.rock's musical hallmarks could be utterly co-opted by it. Fueled by vocalist Scott Stapp's Weiland-inspired growl, Creed rode the Seattle pop-suffused string of hits included here to become one of the 90's most successful rock acts--if one whose level of critical revile nearly matched its multi-million sales. This CD/DVD combo features 13 of the band's signature performances (including all eight of its number one singles), songs that often turn on a Christianity-inspired message that could be as opaque (the anthemic "Higher") as it was overt ("My Own Prison," "What's This Life For"). The accompanying DVD completes the career retrospective, anthologizing nine of the band's videos along with previously unreleased live performances of "Torn," "Higher" and "Weathered." --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars Creed is the perfect "greatest hits" band   November 23, 2004

Creed made 3 albums, all one bigger than the other, between 1997 and 2001, and then called it quits. The Florida band came out of nowhere with 1997's "My Own Prison", which truly was a classic album, with not a weak track on it, the perfect soundtrack to alternative rock in its heydays. The other 2 albums (1999's "Human Clay" and 2001's "Weathered") were far more mixed bag.

"Greatest Hits" (13 tracks, 63 min.) is a straight-forward compilation of Creed's biggest hits and best known album tracks. The songs run chronologically, 4 tracks from each of the first and second album, ending with 5 tracks from the last album. Admit it, Creed had an amazing string of hits in that 5 year period: from "My Own Prison" to "One" to "Higher" to "With Arms Wide Open" to "My Sacrifice" to "One Last Breath", just to name a few, wow. Nevertheless, I cannot rate this compilation "higher" than 4 stars for a couple of reasons: (1) the first album, by far the band's best, is underrepresented with only 4 tracks. Where is "In America", a genuine radio-hit? (2) there are no rarities on here. Why not add the Doors cover "Riders on the Storm" (from the Doors tribute album "Stoned Immaculate"), which also was a radio hit? At 63 min., both of these songs could've easily been added without exceeding the 80 min. capacity of a CD. The bonus DVD brings all of the music videos, along with some live performances.

In all, "Greatest Hits" does a pretty good job, although it falls *this* short of the perfect compilation of Creed. Meanwhile, 3 of the 4 Creed members have gone on to different things (forming "Alter Bridge"), but who knows what has become of lead-singer Scott Stapp, who seemingly has vanished from sight.

5 out of 5 stars Creed: Testaments of Success   February 18, 2005

Whatever your take on Creed, one must admit they were a successful band with a steadfast and passionate fan base. I brought this album for the extras only. I have all the albums. Whilst rehashing on the 'hits' of Creed on the audio CD what I really wanted was the bonus DVD and watched the video clips and the live performances of this once great band.
It indeed is the greatest music hits collection of Creed and the bonus stuff is well worth watching.

4 out of 5 stars Creed, we shall remember you   November 24, 2004

I am so sick and tired of seeing you people downgrade this band. They had some great songs, and yes, it does seem as much they had influence from Pearl Jam. Just like Puddle of Mudd sounds sort of like Nirvana. Look, bands get influence from other bands, that is what starts them. Use your head. This cd is a great compilation of their music over the few short years together.

I do like the addition of Myles Kennedy in Alter Bridge, but I have nothing against Scott Stapp, I, just like most everyone else didn't like the all political route they were going.

I do not like people who spend their whole post telling us what greatest hits cd's to buy. Not everyone has the same taste as you, nor should they. They have every right to like whom they want. I, for instance, do not like the Red Hot Chili Peppers nor do I like the Rolling Stones. I'd never spend money on their "greatest hits" cd's.

People should buy this album if they liked Creed. I don't respect people who haven't bought the album and just come on this section just to rip the band, like most of you critical people have done.

As the famous quote goes "To Each His Own."

People should be able to choose their own types of music and not have to be put down by the likes of most of you anti-creed people.

This cd is quite good, and if you are a FAN of the band, I would reccomend getting it.

And for those, who do in fact come on this section just to rip the band, GROW UP...

    1 out of 5 stars Uh.....Creed had hits?   November 30, 2004

Creed released a "Greatest Hits" package after they broke up? How can you release some as a "Hits" package when it is nothing more then a bunch of garguling, Pearl Jam-wanna-be, trash that shows no musical talent at all. If you want some nice coasters, buy this package.

5 out of 5 stars What If?   November 24, 2004

What if nobody cared about all the negative things said about this band and their music? What if the fans who were truly touched by Creed's music, whether it be from the My Own Prison days or later, ignored the hate for the band and just kept with them the way they felt the first time they heard the music? I became a huge fan of Creed when I first heard "One," and I never looked back...to the disappointment of so many naysayers...whose other musical interests ironically were very similar to my own. I went out and got the Greatest Hits CD despite owning all 3 cd's. Although there a number of great Creed songs that are not on this disc, it obviously does a good job of documenting the band's musical journey from their My Own Prison days through the Weathered era. Some live editions, or b-sides would have been nice, and some more live performances on the dvd would've been appreciated, but Wind-Up has never been very good at releasing such material. So to those who enjoyed Creed's music over the years, or simply want a record that marks the large impact that Creed had on the music world (and it was large....just observe how many haters there are), this is a worthy selection to add to your music library.
