5 out of 5 stars in short: highly recommended to anyone   June 18, 2005

First, a few facts about the album: male singer, 11 tracks, 47:08 total running time, mixed and mastered at the famous Finnvox Studios, something was engineered or something by Timo Tolkki, there's one short epic, 3 fast songs, 3 ballads, and the rest are sweet rock-like songs. At times, you'll think you're listening to Sonata Arctica or one of those Italian power metal bands, but at others, you'll think you're listening to plain old rock. Its this variation from song to song that makes me love this album so much. Also, the sound quality on this album is the best I have ever heard. And this is my 409th CD. (Albums this beats in terms of sound quality include Once, Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia, The Dark Secret, Revolution, and Elements 2 - all bands who have a contract with Nuclear Blast (except Rhapsody) - the best label in metal if you ask me.)

The lyrics are easy to follow and the singer is easy to understand, therefore, you'll get a lot out of your first listen through the album. The songs aren't specifically happy, sad, or angry. There's a little bit of everything, but nothing too extreme. I'd especially recommend this album to someone looking for a good starter's album for euro-metal. The only thing that's not on here is a love ballad, meaning there's no song like Stratovarius's Forever, Supreme Majesty's Until the End of Time, KenZiner's Like a Paradise, or Dream Evil's Forevermore. And yet, once you finish listening to Difference, you don't recognize that the album doesn't have one of these kinds of songs.

There aren't constant keyboards like there is in Norther and like there was in Nightwish, but what's there will certainly please you very much. The music always seems to sound just right, and yet, everything here is new. This all sounded very original to me. When you've heard over 400 CDs, originality becomes very important - believe me. This is why I'm into albums like this one, Medusa's Coil by Highlord, and Northern Twilight Symphony by Virtuosity - they're all original! They don't copy the popular bands! I can't stand bands like Imperanon. Also, I remember hearing a lot of acoustic sounds.

I'd recommend this for fans of any rock or metal, but I'd particularly recommend it to any fan of Altaria, Sonata Arctica, Virtuosity, Thunderstone, Highlord, Labyrinth, DGM, pre-Hellfire Club Edguy, or modern Amorphis. I can't praise it enough. And I don't want to start doing what half of amazon's reviewers do: "This is my favorite album EVER!!! Buy it now or die!!!" I don't do that; that doesn't help anyone who reads the review. You guys all want to know WHY people love the album they're reviewing. And I hope we all know by now to NEVER believe anyone who says "this sucks. For anyone who wants to hear REAL metal, go get the new Limp Bizkit album. peace out." I'd love to - ... never mind.

While I think of it, what is it with bands who have "dream" in the title somewhere??? Or at least have albums or songs with the word "dream" in it??? Dream Evil, Dreamaker, Dream Weaver, Dream Theater, Dreamscape, now Dreamtale, DGM's album "Dreamland"...

Anyways, anyone who has been waiting a long time for an album that will really surprise him/her to be released, wait no longer! This is the album for you!

When and if you get the time, please go read some of my other reviews and say if they were helpful to you or not. Thanks for reading; hope I helped!

3 out of 5 stars Worth it if you like this type of music   June 6, 2006

Dreamtale's Difference is an uncomplicated power/symphonic metal album, in the same vein as Sonata Arctica, Symphony X, Rhapsody etc. And they're not bad, displaying some great moments of musicality. Its all fairly light hearted stuff, with very cheesy lyrics.

The singer is very much like the chap from Rhapsody, but with a stronger accent. He's a good singer, but has such a haughty, odd tone that its hard to treat the music as anything more than good fun (which i presume is the idea, but you can never be sure). To put it another way, he wouldn't sound out of place on Eurovision.

If you like this type of music then Dreamtale will not disappoint, they have some wonderful melodies and choruses, and there is the ususal abundance of drumming and fast riffing. As such, i wouldn't rate them any better or worse than the above mentioned bands. And I still get a laugh out of the song 'Secret Door'(a metaphor for that which is not appropriate for discussion here!).

Just don't take it too seriously, otherwise you'll hate it.

3 out of 5 stars Mediocre power metal   December 16, 2006

When I first heard Dreamtale three years ago, I was instantly hooked. Here was a band that did not have the most amazing musicians, but did have some of the catchiest and most awe-inspiring melodies I had ever heard. Beyond Reality still stands as a pinnacle of power metal excellence, and is still an album that I regulary listen to. Shortly after I acquired Beyond Reality, Ocean's Heart was released, and I was excited to hear some new stuff. After hearing a few samples of the tracks, I learned that Rami Keranen was no longer on vocals, and for me that detracted quite a bit from the music. The new singer really didn't do anything for me, and I never paid the high import price to get Ocean's Heart. For awhile I forgot about Dreamtale. One day while browsing Amazon, I saw a copy of Difference, the newest Dreamtale CD, used for a decent price, so I decided to pick it up. Granted, my expectations were quite high for this album, because Beyond Reality was so amazing. I figured that I just wasn't giving the new guy a fair chance, and I told myself that the music is probably just as good. So, I tried to like it, I really did, but it's just nowhere near the caliber of Beyond Reality. Dreamtale fell into the dreaded sophmore slump with Ocean's Heart and in my opinion, never recovered. The music seems so uninspired on this album. The melodies are not really that great, and a big part of my dislike has to be the singer. Keranen was so much better on vocals. None of the tracks really stand out as anything special, and after awhile the vocals become somewhat laughable. If you're thinking about buying this album, be warned. Give it a listen before you do. If you like Beyond Reality, I would suggest purchasing Grand Illusion by Nocturnal Rites, Beyond Earth by Oratory or Delirium Vale by Twilightning before you invest in this one.

5 out of 5 stars A paragon of power metal.   April 11, 2008
I ordered all of Dreamtale's albums at once, as I heard a few of their songs and their type of music (straight-up, no bull power metal) is my thing. This album is by a little bit (tiny bit more than Beyond Reality) my favorite of Dreamtale's albums. The singer (whether he's a different guy or just better than he was in Ocean's Heart, I dunno) is pretty damn good, not particularly unique in this genre, as a high-hitting counter-tenor is a perfect fit for power metal. The band itself is solid, heavy when they need to be, always melodic, soft when needed, but always good. Songs like Wings of Icaros and Fly are solid power metal songs sure to pump you up. Softer songs as Sail away and Green Fields get your emotions going. All-in-all this is an extremely well made and produced albums worthy of a spot in any power metal fan's collection.
