    Editorial Reviews:

    Album Description
With his energy driven and distinctive performances, Ray J is one of R&B music's hottest upcoming superstars. Although the heavy influence of hip hop in his life led him to enter the music industry as a rapper, he has since answered his true calling as a multi-talented artist, not afraid to show his tender side through his impressive vocal skills. Raydiation is plainly and simply, a collection of masterfully executed tunes ranging from grimy southern influenced selections to the more infectious dance club influenced tunes. The collection and diverse tunes on Raydiation include the production of such notables as R&B's superstar producers R. Kelly & Rodney Jerkins. Both Rodney and R. Kelly bring their on unique blend of synthesized bass laden drum beats and unforgettable melodies to Raydiation. This Ray J release pushes the boundaries like no other Ray J release has in the past, and it does so with catchy, commercial club appeal.

The album features appearances by R. Kelly, Fat Joe, Mya, and Brandy.

    Album Description
UK edition to have an earlier release than the US pressing. 'Raydiation' marks a reinvention of sorts for Ray J, who is stemming away from rapping and showcasing his singing and songwriting abilities. ''It really shows a more mature side of me," he said. "I put my heart and my passion into it. ... The album takes you in and out of relationships, just everyday relationship problems ... then it goes into the clubs and into the bedroom. It's all in the album." Features 11 tracks, including the first single 'Quit Actin' (feat. R. Kelly) and also has appearances by Justin Timberlake and Ray J's big sis Brandy. Sanctuary. 2005.

2 out of 5 stars Steer Clear From This 'Raydiation'!!!   October 2, 2005
6 out of 15 found this review helpful

Raydiation is Ray J's latest attempt at establishing a formidable singing career like his big sis Brandy. His first album Everything You Want in 1997 was looked over entirely, and 2001's This Ain't A Game garnered a little attention with his one hit song "Wait A Minute" featuring Lil Kim. Besides that, Ray J has had to rely heavily on his acting career and hosting duties on BET for anybody to be aware of his existence. His unsuccessful albums of the past will have little to do with the success of Raydiation considering nobody even bought the albums to remember how bad of a singer he truly is. But if Raydiation is the first time hearing his "vocal prowess," then you're in for a huge surprise (and not one of those good surprises either).

It seems Ray J is styled after a lot of soul singers that have had success in the R&B world. But no matter who he's compared to, practically nobody sings as bad as Ray J. He enlists the help of R Kelly for "Quit Actin," but that proves nothing except that R Kelly is the only person who can succeed at sounding like R Kelly. He tries in vain at getting philosophical on "War Is Over" featuring Brandy. But I think Ray J's main problem is trying to sound convincing enough to believe any of the sexual suggestions that he puts on his songs. Like the songs "In The Mood," "Exotic," and first single "One Wish" might be good if somebody else sung the songs, but unfortunately they are all done ineffectively by Ray J. Straight garbage songs like "Sexy" featuring R&B has-been Mya, "Unbelievable," "Let's Play House" and "Keep Sweatin" with Fat Joe should have never been included on the cd at all. "Blue High Heels" is his attempt at being seductive like Chico Debarge and "Centerview" sounds like his vocal equal TQ when he sung about being on the "Westside"

The only good songs on the album are the ones where he sounds like Ralph Tresvant, namely "Anytime" and "Melody." If he was smart, he would release one of these songs to trick some of his doubtful fans into purchasing his cd. But no matter how you look at it, by no means are these two songs enough to even consider buying this album brand new. On the other hand if you like "One Wish," this may be worth paying $3 when it hits the cut-out bin or the clearance rack in a few months from now (yes, I said months...not years like most albums!). Like the medical treatment that some people have to endure, this Raydiation is something nobody wants to ever deal with in their lifetime.

4 out of 5 stars little Ray has come along way   September 20, 2005

I listened to this album it surprised me. The intro was an innovative testament to the way he used to live his life and why he has changed. I thought that to be a unique way to start an R and B album. The first song was a Dark Child produced Crunk and B club banger. It's definitely something that DJ's will be spinning. The next 3 songs are melodius woman worshipping songs that you would expect to hear on a teen movie soundtrack. The almost humerous yet reminescent track "Let's Play" shows his lyrical diversity. The syllables bounce off one another like nursery rhyme. The melody floats over the guitar rift like a petal floating on water. The next song "Blue High Heels" made me queestion my listening to his album. It sounded like Micheal Jackson, singing a Prince song on top of a track almost identical to Kem's "Love is Calling My Name". After that terrible excuse for a song I almost stopped listening to the cd. "Melody" the 7th track on the cd redeemed him. It was an ode to the beauty of a melody that blew my mind. Reminescent of Musiq's love it is a song that praises the quality of a simple yet untangible object. The next song is a soulful duet with his sister. The next 3 songs are typical upbeat almost pop songs. His duet with Mya and his song "In the Mood" are not very good at all. I don't feel "Sexy" or "In the Mood" when I listen to these songs. The last 2 tracks "Anytime" and "Centerview" are only okay. "Centerview" is a great song to end the album with because it gives it closure. If a 4 is an 80 percent out of 100, roughly a B- that is what he deserves. It's better than the average R and B cd but not one that I would tell all my friends to go out and buy.

4 out of 5 stars This is a surprisingly solid album   October 2, 2005

For those who see Ray J on BET he comes of a lil corny, but don't sleep on this album. I heard mix reviews about his other albums and truthfully the title Raydiation is kind of lame. But after I heard One Wish i decided to pick this album up. Now Ray J Doesn't have a strongest voice but he does have good enough production and writing on this album to make up for that. The low points on this album are (Quit Hatin', Sexy, and Unbelievable). Other than that the album is solid.

2 out of 5 stars What happened to this man?   September 25, 2005

I previewed this album, and although some of the songs are pretty off the hook, I really have to ask: What happened to this man?

I remember first hearing him sing on an episode of his big sister's hit sitcom "Moesha" about 10 years ago, and he was terrific. Fast-forward to 2005, and I hear "One Wish." He whined and cried his way through the entire song.

Although the songs are pretty good, his voice has just deteriorated some how. I'm not sure what happened.

1 out of 5 stars what's up with his voice   April 3, 2006

Even though I never listened to Ray J's music I always thought he could sing. When I heard "One Wish" on the radio I liked the song a lot because of the beat and overall sound to it. When I found out it was Ray J, I was shocked because the vocals sounded kind of horrible. Very recently he was on that show, "Showtime at the Apollo" and let me tell you it was embarassing. This boy couldn't sing a lick. It looked like he was in pain and his voice kept going out. He was frontin like he was really doing something but you can tell he strains a lot when he sings and I bet the audience noticed it to. This has got to be one the worst singers in music history. He makes mediocre singers like Mario and Usher sound good. I really don't know why he got a record deal with any company because his vocals are bad. I guess because he's related to Brandy, who can actually sing. When you have that instant name recognition it usually gets you in the door rather you have talent or not. Even though I don't own this CD I just had to write a review because his singing is so bad it's hilarious. His songs sound nice, but it would be a plus if he can actually sing. So why would anybody waste money on this. I don't care if the music is nice. When a bad voice accompanies it, it can be quite annoying and unbearable.
