2 out of 5 stars Dane had his day. Next?   July 28, 2005

Alright, with "Harmful If Swallowed" well behind us, "Retaliation" comes as a somewhat pleasant follow-up, but one of questionable progress. Cook appears to have progressed very mildly if at all since his first album was released, and compared to other stand-up comedians, not just those like Dave Chapelle, but those like George Carlin and some of the guys that pioneered stand-up as a form of comedy, Dane's recent batch of kicks and giggles falls short. Comedians like Lenny Bruce and Mort Sahl helped transform stand-up from, as Wikipedia says, "the practice of telling jokes to an intelligent form of entertainment." Dane Cook seems to be stuck on just telling jokes; which is fine.

I saw Dane Cook live at Villanova this past April, where I heard most of this material live, and it was hilarious - I'll give him that. Since seeing him, though, I've realized a few things:

    (1) the delivery of the jokes on this double LP/DVD release are not nearly as good as the delivery he gave at Villanova, so I'm not sure why they chose the ones they did for this release.

    (2) Dane Cook is funny, but he's not outright clever. He hasn't made me think, or re-evaluate anything, or done anything really, besides providing me with some slap-stick humor, which is fine, I guess, if you're looking to be left wanting more. His jokes are funny, and generally delivered decently, but they're also painfully pointless, in that he tends to exagerate so much with each joke that it seems like he's really trying to provoke laughter than earn it. In other words, Dane Cook is funny because he delivers his jokes comically, with ridiclous voices, set in unusually odd situations. His jokes aren't necessarily what gets me to laugh so much as the fact that he's running around on stage making funny faces.

All this is not to say Dane Cook is garbage, but "Retalation" falls short of his first release, and his routine falls short of what, for other comedians, were freshman efforts. Still, Cook seems to be wildly popular, especially among the college crowd - which affirms my conviction that his work belongs more in the genre of "Pop Humor" than other destined-to-be-remembered stand-up.

1 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing   August 29, 2005

Standup comedy has always been treacherous ground. For every Richard Pryor/Bill Hicks/Billy Connolly/Robin Williams there are a thousand duds. Having read some good reviews of Dane Cook in the tabloid media, I purchased this 3 disc set for, what I thought, the low price of $15! I have listened to it twice and I found it to be just plain awful. There is an art in having the ability to tell a story about almost any subject and have the audience perceive the absurd and humorous side of the tale. For example, Bill Hicks used the idea of having terminally ill people play the role of stuntmen/women in violent movies! Not exactly idle chit chat for the dinner table, you would think. Yet, Hicks managed to use the premise to not only make his audience laugh but, to raise the issue about the elderly being abandoned. Comedians like Pryor and Bruce were masters at using the standup to raise issues that had to be addressed. Dane Cooks contribution to society is to advocate defecation! One or two of his ideas got a smile from me but, they were the exceptions. This cd doesnt even belong in the bargin bin.

1 out of 5 stars The biggest thing in comedy!? Lord, help us...   September 14, 2006

Man, have I given this guy a chance. Multiple chances. Listened to the CDs, saw the big HBO special. I mean, his career is red hot now. He clearly has lots of fans. Mostly college age (perhaps this should be a warning to some of you). All I can say is "maybe they'll grow out of it." He is NOT funny. His act has no bite, no point of view, no opinion/viewpoint at all. His comedy consists of spewing observations his audience can relate to (the "this is all happened to us" or "has this ever happened to you?" school of humor). He runs about manically, acting out every little word that comes out of his mouth (for those in the audience that may not be so good with words). His fans acknowledge that, yes, they can relate. "Yeah! That's happened to me!" "I know that reference!' They laugh, cheer, clap, and plunk down their hard-earned dollars for his vanilla wit. He never actually COMMENTS on the things he discusses in any intelligent, interesting way. He has no edge. He's not outraged by anything. He's cute 'n' cuddly. Richard Pryor must be rolling in his grave at the very fact that Cook is classified as a stand up comic. "Pryor? The guy writing this must be OLD!' Okay, try this on for size: Chris Rock is good comedy. Same with Dave Chappelle. Carlin. Laura Kightlinger. Kinison. Rodney Dangerfield. Bob Saget. Gilbert Gottfried. Dom Irrera. Lewis Black. Robert Klein. The late Mitch Hedberg. Jim Norton. Patton Oswalt. Brian Posehn. DeGeneres. Jon Stewart. Bob & David. The UCB. I'm not even a big fan of Sarah Silverman, but at least she's trying to bring something different to the party. Anything but this! God help us. Let's hope he goes the way of Carrot Top and Dice soon (don't forget, Cook fans, Mr. Top and Mr. Clay were once as popular as your boy here).

2 out of 5 stars OY! Is this what comedy is now?   December 1, 2006

Quick story, everyone where I work is a fan of this goof. They talk about him all the time and I had yet to hear a funny line from any of it. I did still have an interest in him since I've heard other people say the same thing. I relented and BORROWED this CD and after an excrutiating test of my wills at listening to this peice of crap TWICE I found a chuckle here and there but I did walk away from it with 2 good feelings.

1 I'm glad I didn't waste any money on this
2 I'm glad I won't waste any money on any of this guys wares at all in the future and that includes his lame Wal-Mart movie with that Simpson idiot.

The problem is that this guy is just too cutesy and sweet. It's WAY too easy comedy to get into and theres nothing to sink your teeth into. Dane takes too long to get his jokes anywhere and I could care less when he finally did. Good one, on the disc he makes a joke about growing up and meeting someone strange and makes some weird sound with his mouth. He paused long enough for me to finish his lame joke, which I said a full second before he did, "Thats the sound of growing up" and he damn near said it word for freaking word.

One of my co-workers (actually my boss) said that part of his act is watching his body language. Oh! I guess I'm completely turned around on the subject now! I need to picture body language going on while listening to A STUPID CD!! CARLIN has body language too but...I don't NEED to picture it to make some of his discs funny!!

Too cute for his own damn good, this guy puts me off my dinner and I really wanted to like him at first but that hope is dashed against the rocks now. I will stick with old Carlin (which is to say young Carlin) Bill Hicks, Dave Attel and yes all you weak kneed people out there LARRY THE FREAK'IN CABLE GUY, before I even think of letting this frat boy idiot poulute my radio with his sillyness about wanting to battle monkeys and getting his twisty ice cream cones.

5 out of 5 stars Consummate Cook   July 26, 2005
13 out of 14 found this review helpful

To claim that Retaliation, the double CD plus DVD has been much anticipated would be a gruesome understatement. Dane Cook has been blazing to astronomical heights in the stand up comedy world as of late, selling out 5,000+ seaters around the nation, and is soon to break into the mainstream with a performance at Madison Square Garden, a substantial role in the upcoming comedy Waiting... and a television pilot being shopped around Hollywood. A loyal and growing fan base has been writhing in anticipation for Cook's comedic nexus, their eagerness ballyhooed by surprise website announcements and message board hype.

Finally Dane's knockout punch has landed and this monumental double comedy CD delivers the hysterical megaton blast as promised. His comic arsenal has evolved significantly since Harmful if Swallowed and Cook has pumped up his cool yet frantic, observational style on steroids compromising some of his polish and timing for a more bulldozer barrage of stream-of-consciousness tangents and absurdity which dares the audience to keep up. This is an even bolder, more confident Dane Cook unleashing the fury of his creative id onstage, exploring his limits with complexity of language, ("...in my periph." "BAMF"), concepts ("...a mythical creature poking holes in my exhaust") and structure (including an anecdote told backwards, "Tarantino style"). It is a marvel to experience a less inhibited Cook flourish within his own boundless mental agility and successfully infuse an audience with his highly acute uniqueness. Dane's brilliant vulgarity also persists and garnishes his bits along with hip references to Tekken, Transformers and He-Man. This is a virtuosic Dane Cook and he's hitting on all cylinders.

The DVD includes the remainder of his Comedy Central endeavors including the Bar Mitzvah performance, animated versions of older bits from Shorties Watchin Shorties, a more disparaging Dane chiding fellow comics from the roast of Dennis Leary and perhaps the highlight of the DVD, his improvised prank phone calls from Crank Yankers brought to life with puppets (watch Dane morph from a befuddled foreigner into a sardonic homophobe and dupe a sleazy car salesman to blow him a kiss over the phone).

Retaliation indeed establishes itself to be Dane Cook's chef-d'oeuvre and will satiate his legion of hungry fans. Aside from being an ultimate assertion of Cook's undeniable talent it marks a step in the development of his comedy and may possibly become a landmark in the turning point of his career as he transcends from popular comic to star of film and television.
