For saboteurs of records that sound good because of elements completely unrelated to the artist, Ashlee Simpson's sophomore effort, I Am Me, may well be a dream disc. The production is a tight-wrapped, A-type achievement and, with sounds running from hip-hop (the unstoppably infectious "L.O.V.E.") to vintage '80s (the lusty "Dancing Alone") to Synchronicity-era Sting (the energetic, pulsing "Boyfriend") to airwave-friendly ballads that sister Jessica might have choked her way through ("Catch Me When I Fall"), the music sucks you in more reliably than a bagless Dyson. But instead of Ashlee Simpson, credit for both those things - really, for the way this disc favorably insinuates itself into a listener's head overall - belongs to producer/keyboardist/bassist/guitarist John Shanks. Ardent Ashlee-ites, of course, will beg to differ, and they won't be without their points: In addition to co-writing each of these 11 songs, some of which ("Beautifully Broken," a response to her "Saturday Night Live" lip-synching debacle) are more sophisticated than others ("Burnin' Up," a Madonna-reminiscent, reggae-style romp), she sings in a voice as artfully burnished and appealing as it was on her 2004 debut. She makes you want to la la all over again, and for that, and for finding the right guy to orchestrate this acknowledgment-heavy jewel, you've got to like her. --Tammy La Gorce

I am me? Wow what a deep title. Then I guess that makes you.....you yeah that's it. Listen people how much more of this fake crap can you take? It seems like fan's of this worthless "Semi" pop star don't care that Ashlee uses "Enhancements" to make her voice sound better. I'm sure she still does live too. Listen I watched her show I saw how bad a singer she is. The computer used to correct her voice must of blown up a couple times during the making of this CD. Listen I'm not dumb Catch Me When I Fall is a great example of this. Do you really think she can hit those high notes? I don't think so. I even watched her dumb MTV special and it was clear she still uses a backing track. But listen people, here is the bottom line. Ashlee doesn't write her own stuff. She "Co-wrote" songs on here. That means some 40 year old dude gave her songs and she added a line or two to make it sound like her own. To me that sounds like a High School student going online and taking a paper that someone else wrote and then changing some words around to make it sound more like them. Don't waste your time, the whole simpson family is worthless but at least Jessica can sing.

What a wonderful piece of garbage. Ashlee if this is the best you got then I would invest in a pair of clear plastic high heels or just live in the dark shadow of your sisters soon to be over career. Oh, one must wonder the intellectual songwriting genius of "Boyfriend" and L.O.V.E., it reminds me of the classics like "Over The Hills and Far Away" and "Misty Mountain Hop".....NOT!! Lets face it THIS ALBUM WOULD HAVE TO GET BETTER JUST TO SUCK! I would rather listen to my 3 year old niece sing twinkle, twinkle little star, while somebody scrapes their fingernails across a blackboard. The losers on American Idol have more talent than this "never will be." It probably true but there will be more from Ashlee as long as her pimp of a father has something to do with it. Because we all know he'd rather humiliate his daughter and convince her that she has talent cause "he ain't goin' back to preachin'" to make a living.

First of all I'm dissapointed to see that people who bought this album bought Fiona Apple long-awaited and acclaimed "Extraoridnary Machine", which by the way would make a MUCH better purchase than this.

Now on to Ashee herself. She's back, and trying harder than ever to be "herself". What a load of crap. We are supposed to feel sorrow for this girl because she made an embarssment of herself on national TV? I refuse to sit back and support an artist who can't even sing her own music when there are 1000's of talented artists who would love some exposure. But no, she's shoved down America' s teenage girl's throats.

"Boyfriend" could possibly be the worst first single I've heard from a recent pop princess, just horrible melody, maybe some of the worst lyrics of 2005.

MAN, Ashlee Simpson can't sing. She sounds like a sick horse. If you appreciate any sort of music whatsoever, DO NOT BUY THIS CD. Simpson's voice is shockingly raspy and hoarse in contrast to clueless sister Jessica's operatic (in comparision) shriek.

And don't worry, she doesn't seem to have developed much as a songwriter, with lyrics such as: 'Well I'm sorry/That he called/ me/And that I answered the telephone'. But the worst song on the album has to be Hollaback Girl rip-off 'L.O.V.E.'. Simpson's vocals are more horrendous than ever, combined with a nightmare-ishly cheesy melody and goofy lyrics.

I feel bad for Ashlee. No one will ever take her seriously as a performer and she is stuck with that grating voice for her whole life. She should stick to doing hoedowns.

i really hate joe simpson, for always trying to shove his "talented" daughters down our throats. ashlee simpson lips sync, and she made up several different lies explaining why, now she has come back to make another crappy album? joe simpson has got to stop being so obsessed with fame.

do not buy this album. i have heard it and there is not one song that is memorable enough to be remembered. as soon as you finish listening, you just regret wasting your past hour listening to this crap.
