Tim McGraw's second greatest-hits collection in six years is also his ninth consecutive debut at #1 on the Billboard country charts. That means he must be doing something right. But what, precisely, aside from keeping up his hunk factor, and maturing his voice? Well--choosing dynamic songs that resonate at the very core of most folks' emotional center, for starters. So it's no surprise that this 16-song package kicks off with "Live Like You Were Dying," his ten-week #1 crossover hit. In addition to chart-toppers dating from 1995 ("Not a Moment Too Soon"), McGraw fills the track list with two smashes that never appeared on his own albums: his Grammy-winning duet with wife Faith Hill, "Like We Never Loved At All," and "Over and Over," the soulful Nelly confession in which McGraw, his voice technically altered, essentially serves as the rapper's tortured psyche. Of the four new songs, a cover of Ryan Adams's "When the Stars Go Blue" emerges as a stellar example of the pained loner ballads McGraw does so well, and brings to mind the faint desperation inherent in his interpretation of Elton John's "Tiny Dancer." And "My Little Girl," one of two rare McGraw co-writes here (joining "I've Got Friends Who Do"), draws on his experience as a parent and promises to flatten any father who's ever tucked in his daughter. Through the years, McGraw's on-record persona has evolved from the wimpish underdog ("Don't Take the Girl") to the strong, sensitive alpha male, both in his take-charge delivery and his sometimes edgy repertoire ("Red Ragtop"). All in all, this lengthy, hooky offering isn't just a "value pack" for McGraw fans--it's reason to hire a skywriter. --Alanna Nash

    Album Description
Tim McGraw Reflected: Hits Vol 2, his second collection of greatest hits. Showcasing a body of work bookended by 1994's "Not A Moment Too Soon" and 2006's "My Old Friend," it is a reminder of the consistency and depth that have made him such an icon. Several of the songs are drawn from two albums he recorded in a mountaintop retreat with his touring band, 2002's Tim McGraw & the Dancehall Doctors, and 2004's Live Like You Were Dying. Together, they sold seven million copies, and between them they produced hits like "Watch The Wind Blow By," "Red Ragtop," "She's My Kind of Rain," "Real Good Man," and the ten-week #1, "Live Like You Were Dying," all of which are included here. The project also includes "Everywhere," from the CD of the same name, and "Grown Men Don't Cry" and "The Cowboy In Me," from 2001's "Set This Circus Down."

5 out of 5 stars Reflected Shows Where McGraw Has Been and What is Yet to Come   March 28, 2006
13 out of 14 found this review helpful

During the course of 12 years and nine albums, the breadth and depth of McGraw's material has grown significantly as demonstrated by the 16 cuts on his second hits compilation. The previously released material is all here since Vol. 1 as well as a couple of suprises, notably the title tracks from Not a Moment to Soon and Everywhere. There is one glaring omission from this collection..no Angry All the Time. As a track that ranks among his best (as well as a multi week number one) you wonder why it was not included and the likes of Like We Never Loved at All was. This small thing aside, this disc excels in a way few compilations ever do.

The album contains four new songs, all potential hits should the Curb choose to release them (and they should). The sweetly paternal "My Little Girl" is culled from the upcoming film "My Friend Flicka," and is one the most well written songs I have heard in a long time. If the line "When you were asleep I would whisper I love you in the moonlight at your door...as I walked away I would hear to say Daddy, love you more" does not bring any father to his knees then he should have his pulse checked. The observant and positive "Beautiful People" is the absolute antithesis of Marilyn Manson's song of the same name and shows once again that McGraw believes in the inherent goodness and strength of the human spirit. Even better is the empathetic anthem "I've Got Friends That Do." which McGraw co-wrote (a first for him) and which evokes a theme more and more present in some of his songs of late-God. To me though, the best of the new stuff is McGraw's well-rendered take on Ryan Adams' "When the Stars Go Blue," showcasing surprising range and the instincts that have served him so well.

The collection as a whole shows why McGraw is developing quickly into an icon. He has obvious talents and undeniable gifts which make him the artist of his time-foremost among them his ability to evolve both as an artist and a human being while continuing to raise the bar musically. Songs like the abortion-themed "Red Rag Top" and the Nelly collaboration "Over and Over" prove McGraw is not afraid to take risks, and, as ever, the risks are paying off.

Finally, though fans and critics alike are hesitant to anoint people as legends until they are dead or at least 50 plus, McGraw is quickly reaching that level. Many pointed to his last album as the CD of his career but I beg to differ. With the new music here alongside what came before, it becomes instantly clear that McGraw, who has his 40's still ahead of him, is an artist who, should he choose, can go the way of George Strait and continue to be a valid if not dominating force in his genre well past most artists "prime".

5 out of 5 stars Reveals the Maturation of McGraw over the years   May 16, 2006

McGraw's second hits collection contains 16 tracks, half of which come from 2001's Set This Circus Down, 2002's Tim McGraw and the Dancehall Doctors and 2004's Live Like You Were Dying. Those albums found a more mature McGraw appreciating life ("Live Like You Were Dying"), a buddy ("My Old Friend"), and his woman ("Watching The Wind Blow By," "She's My Kind Of Rain"), plus exhibiting an increased sensitivity ("Grown Men Don't Cry").

McGraw also reaches back to the era of the first hits collection to include the chart-toppers "Not A Moment Too Soon" (1994) and "Everywhere" (1997). Eight other top five hits have yet to be anthologized, including number ones "Angry All The Time" (2001), "Unbroken" (2002), as well as McGraw's strongest vocal performance to date, "One Of These Days" (1998). The other omitted hits include "Refried Dreams" (1995), "Can't Be Really Gone" (1995), "All I Want Is A Life" (1998), "Back When" (2004), and Do You Want Fries With That" (2005).

Two collaborative hits are making their debut on a McGraw album and both sound out of place: the rapper's delight "Over And Over" with Nelly and the Faith Hill-dominated "Like We Never Loved At All." Much better are the new four new recordings, two of which - "My Little Girl" and "I've Got Friends That Do" - McGraw co-wrote (his first self-penned recordings). Hopefully, as his musical horizons expand, McGraw will provide us with more quality compositions in the future.

    4 out of 5 stars Dependable   April 29, 2006

Tim McGraw is one of the most reliable hit makers around, and his CDs are good value for money, running 50+ minutes in length of mostly good quality music. This second volume of hits collects another 12 of his hits along with four new songs. Two of the hits "Not A Moment Too Soon" and Everywhere" predate some of the songs that were on GREATEST HITS V1. Also the hits are not in chronological order, jumping back and forth. The most recent hits "Drugs or Jesus", "Back When" and "Do You Want Fries With That?" are missing, which makes sense since the label doesn't want to prematurely kill off sales of Tim's most recent CDs but there's no excuse for leaving off "Angry All The Time".The CD leads off with the immortal "Live Like You Were Dying", one of his finest songs, and thus far his biggest hit. At least 7 of these songs were Billboard #1's ("Live Like You Were Dying", The Cowboy In Me", "Real Good Man", Watch The Wind Blow By", "Grown Men Don't Cry", Not A Moment Too Soon","Everywhere") and all except "Over and Over" were top 5's (this song, sung with rapster Nelly was a pop hit but really doesn't fit with the rest of the CD and is by far the weakest track on the disc).

I have mixed feelings about including new songs on a "Greatest Hits" collection. I guess the labels must do something to get the most devoted fans to shell out for a collection of songs they've already purchased. All of the new songs are good - "When The Stars Go Blue" is already at #15 and rising and I expect "My Little Girl" to become a big hit.

4 out of 5 stars Could have been better, but still top notch   March 30, 2006

Tim McGraw is a dependable artist. He always makes memorable songs. This second collection of his music includes 12 of his biggest hits (from where the first collection left off) and 4 new tracks. My main quip with this CD is that there are some notable hits missing, mainly the #1 hit "Angry All The Time", "Drugs or Jesus", "Back When" and a few others. Hopefully they are on the third collection, as they definately deserved a place here. To include his collaboration with Nelly entitled "Over and Over" makes sense because it was a huge hit on the pop charts, but it seems out of place next to McGraw's country hits. Those hits include "Live Like You Were Dying", "Everywhere", "She's My Kind of Rain", "Real Good Man", and many others.

The new tracks are good. The first single is a cover of a Ryan Adams song titled "When The Stars Go Blue". Ryan Adams is my favorite artist, and I feel a little upset about anyone covering his work, especially since so many have covered that song, but Tim does a good job. "Beautiful People" is a nice song too. "My Little Girl" is a beautiful ballad from a movie Tim is starring in later this year, which he co-wrote, and also wrote "I've Got Friends That Do", with the Warren Brothers.

    Overall a good collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellence must be Tim's middle name   March 30, 2006

Once again Tim proves why he is here for the long haul. Over 13 years since his first album and he is still getting better, taking risk and growing in his music.

He nevers fails to deliver an album that you can enjoy not just for a few weeks, but an album, they you will fine yourself listening to years later. That is the hallmark of a Tim CD, it becomes like your favorite sweater that just grows dearer as time goes on.

I am very happy that he included Everywhere on this album, since that to me was one big omission from the first Greatest Hits, It is worth the price alone.

The new songs are excellent and My Little Girl will be used as a song for a father and daughter dance at weddings for years to come.

If you are a parent and especially a father and don't get misty eye with this song, I would be worried about you. The line, "Sometimes you're asleep, I whisper I love you in the moonlight at your door, as I walk away I hear you say, daddy love you more" will make you melt.

The song Beautiful People is just real, about real people, real life that happens everyday. People that love their kids, take care of their parents in their old age, go to work, raise their kids, do it right without the fanfare and glory. The everyday people that are the beautiful people that you don't hear about in the magazines and press.

The song, "I've Got Friends That Do" is powerful and can and IMO will change someone's life for the better. It can have the impact of his song, "Live Like You Were Dying".

These lines speak volumes, "This is for yours truly, just a little verse to remind me, we all got somewhere to turn, and I may not know what it's like to send my only son to save the world and watch him die, and I may not know how it feels to hang there on the cross, to prove that love is real, but I've got friends that do".

A song about hope and redemption, that speaks to the trails and tribulations all of us face.

Once again Tim delievers with honesty, the words and feelings all of us have.
