4 out of 5 stars Waddya know? A charming Disney film for kids and their unwitting parents   January 29, 2006
David Pearlman (Arlington, MA United States)

As a 40-something adult, this is the kind of movie that would usually send me running from the room. Of course, things change if you have a target-aged young daughter who comes home and tells you that her friends told her this movie is a MUST WATCH!! All right, so with much trepidation I agreed to sit and watch this with my daughter.

And what do you know? It turns out to be charming. No, there are no surprises here (except maybe that it IS charming and not just treacly pap, as are so many for-kids morality movies). Someone had the clever idea of making a musical for kids--a series of music videos tethered by a thin plot, really--and it works. I have to admit that I was fully won over when the basketball practice turned into a music number (Get'cha Head in the Game), with the stock sounds of basketball (squeeky shoes, etc.) cleverly mixed into the song.

There are a number of pretty good songs/videos in the movie, though my favorite is the Breaking Free duet that basically serves as the climax.

Much has been made about the question of whether the actors who sing these songs are really all that musically talented. It's hard to say without seeing them perform live, but most of these songs have clearly been enhanced by an autotuner, which suggests these may be actors with very modest singing ability (typical of the modern Disney stable, think Hilary Duff, Christy Carlson Romano, etc.) rather than singers who can also act.

But who cares? The songs are catchy and worthwhile within the context of the film and they sound fine and in-tune and catchy on the soundtrack album. I don't expect that these actors will be taking the production on the road anytime soon, so it really is irrelevant what studio trickery might have been used to get the songs to their final state. This album is a fine sourvenir of the movie, and is eminently listenable (and often a lot more than that).

5 out of 5 stars Best DCOM Soundtrack!   January 22, 2006

I am an avid Disney Channel watcher and I tend to watch some of the new DCOMs that come out. Most of them are eh, so-so and rather predictable. However, High School Musical "bops to the top!" All of the actors are magnificent and the songs vary in the style. There are some ballads, hip-hop, "show tune" style, and so much more. I also think the dancing is AWESOME!!!!

The acting is great. Ashley Tisdale, Lucas Grabeel, Vanessa Anne Hudgens, and Zac Efron all star in this musical. And they all sing their own songs (pre recorded yes, but still great!!!!). Their dancing is wonderful as well. Kenny Ortega directed AND choreographed the movie.

So, what you need to do is watch the movie on Disney and buy the soundtrack...I have listened to it several times now and have yet to get tired of it. It's a worth while purchase.

Many people refuse to even take a glance at this movie and soundtrack because they hear that it's a cheesy musical. It's a shame that they are missing out on something great just because they may think that it's cool to ignore it. In some cases, they just hands down don't like it, but i can guarantee you that most people just won't give it a chance or are too embarrassed to admit it. But they're entitled to their own opinions, so I'll leave it be.

I am entitled to my own as well, and I'm here to say that this movie and soundtrack are very impressive. The cliche moral of the movie (to break free from what you're used to & to follow your dreams) seemed to somehow be a novel concept because it was taught with songs and music, but maybe it was just me. Kids can really relate to this movie and the humor in the movie was not that of regular Disney movies. It was actually funny in a way that didn't involve pratfalls or forced laughter. Old Disney movies were great, but they started to get pretty bad. I'm a sucker for musicals, so I watched this movie. I'm proud to say that High School Musical gave me hope for a better future in Disney Movies.

This soundtrack will bring cheer and a sense of comfort to most people who listen to it. The young voices of Zac Efron, Vanessa Anne Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale, and Lucas Grabeel are fantastic and compliment each other very well. The songs that were written are more than appropriate for the movie and the catchy beats make you want to listen to them again and again.

I felt the need to write this review because people seem to be so harsh on everything Disney related. Before you get all offensive, just remember that we are all entitled to our own opinion and I chose to acknowledge some of your harsh ones, but still accepted them. This soundtrack is very good, and I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars I love it! You will too! Incredible!   June 4, 2006

I'll resist the temptation to review the movie as well, but if you like this music, you will definitely like the movie.
I'll start by saying, this is basically all I listen to on my iPod. I listen to it while I'm on the computer, going to sleep, I just can't get enough of it! It's so great and catchy, I even hear adults singing it!
This music will only appeal to kids, right? Wrong! I'm am 14, my sister is sixteen and we are both absolutely obsessed. Everyone I know my age loves this. Everyone I know loves this! Most teens will enjoy this music (especially girls) The music pleases a wide audience, from babies (yes, my one year old cousin bops around to this music) to grandparents. Seriously, everyone of all ages will love this.
The singers (Zac Efron, Vanessa Anne Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale, and Lucas Grabeel) are very talented. They have unique and pleasant voices. The songs are all very good songs too. You know how a lot of times you will only like/listen to a couple of songs on your CD? Well, on this one, I absolutely love every one!
As a long time pianist I love the piano and instrument part, and I can't wait to get the book of piano music!

I love every single song on this album, so I won't bother to include "I love it!" With every track. Here's a description of them, though.
    1. Start of Something New: It's very pretty and nice. Not too fast, and not too slow. Great track. great way to start off with something excellent and set the standard for the rest of the album. Sung by Zac Efron and Vanessa Anne Hudgens.
    2. Getcha Head in the Game: This is more hip hop, but even though I'm not into that music, I love this song. It gets you pumped up and makes you want to dance. (As it is sung during a basketball practice in the movie) the phrase "Getcha head in the game!" is commonly heard yelled at teenage sporting events and practices. Boys are most likely to like this track best, but girls will like it too. Sung by Zac Efron and his basketball team.
    3. What I've Been Looking For: Catchy and peppy (in a good way,) this fast song is a lot of fun to listen to. This track is pop. Sung by Ashley Tisdale and Lucas Grabeel.
    4. What I've Been Looking For (Reprise): This is sung by Zac Efron and Vanessa Anne Hudgens, where as the previous is sung by Ashley Tisdale and Lucas Grabeel. This is the slow version, and absolutely beautiful.
    5. Stick to the Status Quo: Fun, and good one to dance to. This is a group number. Hard to describe, but very likeable, and a favorite among many.
    6. When There Was Me and You: A slow ballad sung solely by Vanessa Anne Hudgens. It's very pretty, and she does a good job with it. It's so good that even the toughest critics admit they like it.
    7. Bop to the Top: This is soooo enjoyable to listen to. Another good dance one, this is just lots and lots of fun. My sister's favorite. Sung by Ashley Tisdale and Lucas Grabeel.
    8. Breaking Free: The climax. Soooo beautiful. Just WOW. You will love this one. Excellent. Sung by Zac Efron and Vanessa Anne Hudgens.
    9. We're All in This Together: Great to dance to. This is a group number with solos by each of the four main stars. A favorite of many. I love to dance to it. Very Catchy. It's the way they end the movie, and it's and excellent way to do so.
    10. I Can't Take My Eyes Off of You: Not included in the film. I wasn't sure if I'd like it as much, but I do! Pop, and very nice sounding. A mix of pretty and fun. Has an interesting sound to it. I'm glad that they included it on the CD even though it isn't in the movie. (It's still sung by the four main stars)
    11. Getcha Head in the Game (by B5): OK, I restart the CD before this. I contradicted myself, this is the one track I don't love, but I don't really count it as part of the rest of the CD, as it's sung by different artists, B5. I don't like them and they change the song so it's not one I listen to. Other people like it though. Even if you don't like this track, the CD is still completely worth the value, this song is just not my style. I have a hard time with change, lol. You might like it though, so judge for yourself.
12 and 13 are Karaoke of Start of Something new and Breaking Free.

I highly recommend you buy this CD. It's great for all ages. I completely love it. It's my favorite CD, one of my most used purchases ever. You will not be dissappointed!

What do you get when you get a great cast emsemble to sing in this Disney Channel movie? You get something amazing! Here's the main cast: Summerland's Zac Efron as Troy, Thunderbirds' Vanessa Anne Hughes as Gabriella, Catch That Kid and Flight 29 Down's Corbin Bleu as Troy's best friend, Chad, The Suite Life of Zack and Cody's Ashley Tisdale as Sharpay, and some guy from Halloweentown High as Sharpay's brother, Ryan. These kids can sing! If you love the soundtrack, then wait 'til you see the movie! ROCK ON!
