    3 out of 5 stars Eh   March 17, 2006

What do you get when you mix old-school thrash with European death metal? If you guessed "an album that every metalhead has heard a hundred times before," then you were correct. Kataklysm's eleventh record, "In the Arms of Devastation," is in the running for the most boring album of 2006. It begins on a strong note: "Like Angels Weeping (The Dark)" is powered by a fast guitar lead, jackhammer drums, and monstrous vocals. Unfortunately, after that, the music's novelty wears off rather quickly, and the album goes downhill. It doesn't take the listener long to realize that everything about this disc (from the title to the blast beats to the screamed vocals) is generic. Granted, "ItAoD" sounds quite awesome when it's fast, but when Kataklysm start slowing things down and recycling the riffs (as in "Crippled & Broken," "It Turns To Rust," "In Words Of Desperation," and "The Road To Desperation"), the songs become downright tedious. To make matters worse, some of the songs (see "Let Them Burn") just don't go anywhere. "In the Arms of Devastation" may be super heavy, but it's also as predictable as Trapt's new single. If you're new to this genre, you might find some enjoyment here; but if you want a metal album that's the slightest bit interesting, look elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Kataklysm have become the greatest Canadian Death Metal band!   March 23, 2006
8 out of 9 found this review helpful

While other Death Metal bands have stuck to formulaic gore lyrics and the same technical guitar sounds and growling, Kataklysm has managed to escape the cliche while continuing to produce heavy Death Metal that will satisfy any fan of the genre. Anyone who is a fan of At The Gates, Vader, or Morbid Angel will love this band. It will also appeal to fans of the heavier type of Melodic Death Metal (a.k.a. Dark Tranquillity, Nightrage, or Callenish Circle), as there are more melodic parts to this CD. Bottom line, this is band you must check out if you like any of these bands, and is worth a listen if you like any extreme heavy metal. These Canadians never seem to put out dissapointing releases, check out "Shadows and Dust" by them as well.

2 out of 5 stars And the award for overhyped death metal of the year?   April 6, 2006

The promotional sticker on this album stated that "Kataklysm have become true innovators in the death metal scene". This makes me wonder how much Nuclear Blast had to pay someone to say that. Either that or the comment was taken out of context, originally reading "Kataklysm have become true innovators in the death metal scene...just kidding". This is about as far from innovation as you can get. Not only is this a complete rehash of the style of the last few Kataklysm albums, it's also considerably more boring and predictable.

A previous reviewer got it right when he asked what you get when you mix thrash with european death metal. This sound is so stale, it's hard to believe people are buying it. Kataklysm treats us to an alternating pattern of rehashed melodic death metal riffs and slow, simplistic thrash breakdowns. By death metal standards, the Kataklysm boys are some of the most underachieving in death metal.

The first four songs on the album are all solid, if not particularly impressive Kataklysm tunes. If this quality had been continued through the cd, I probably would have given this a 3 star review. The last couple Kataklysm albums being 4 star material, I could subtract one star for the fact that Kataklysm have merely repeated their past work. "Like Angels Weeping," "Crippled and Broken," "Let them Burn," and "To Reign Again" are all decent Kataklysm songs, the problem is that they could have easily been on any of the past few Kataklysm releases.

Unfortunatly, the album takes a drastic turn for the worse starting with the incredibly boring "It Turns to Rust". It's immediately a bad sign when you have the singer of Kittie guest singing on a death metal cd. The song consists of boring, mid tempo, rehashed thrash riffs that I've heard a hundred times. Then we're treated to "Open Scars," an uptempo thrash number which consists of more ripped of Gothenburg riffing and boring thrash riffing. I'm not even going to grace the reamining three songs with a comment, all I will say is that they bored me to tears and were all extremely ill-conceived.

Needless to say I was extremely disappointed with this album. It's weaker, slower, more predictable, and more boring than their last few albums. Consider the fact that this was supposed to be a big improvement on those, and you've got one of the most overhyped DM releases of 2006. Undoubtedly a lot of people will love this, but I would never accuse the masses of having good taste in extreme metal. I rarely say this, but this is Kataklysm trying to appeal to the MTV2 generation...and it seems to be working.

This will definitely be the last Kataklysm cd I buy.

First song I heard from this album was "Like Angels Weeping," on TV.. I immediately pursued the whole album, and was astonished.
Great riffs and vocals are downright amazing.

Excellent Album, I need to check out some more of this band. :)

5 out of 5 stars One of the better albums   June 2, 2006

While this album did not have the earth shattering effect as Serenity in Fire did on me - Kataklysm continues to deliver a heaping host of pure hatred in this realease.

A long time listener of most death metal genre - many bands have become a tired regurgitation of each predicessor. Not these guys - while some of the earlier realeases were a dissapointment Devestation pleased the ear of many a critical commrades - including many a folk down at Mosh Pit records - a local host to the non-divine sounds. The album is composed quite well without a single track that I skip. I make sure to drive by Focus on the Family whenever I can with the windows down and the volume blaring!
