    Editorial Reviews:

    Amazon.com
Since Toby Keith's commercial success and canny image manipulation show how shrewd he is, perhaps the best explanation for songs as lackluster as "Note to Self" (a generic Rolling Stones arrangement with a hokey lyric) and "Runnin' Block" (about bedding an unattractive woman for the benefit of a buddy) are either laziness or pandering. On White Trash with Money, his first release on his own Show Dog imprint (and without longtime producer James Stroud), Keith occasionally appears to be stretching himself--on the string-laden balladry of "A Little Too Late," the tender "Crash Here Tonight," and perhaps his finest vocal performance to date on "Too Far This Time"--but often seems to be coasting. "Get Drunk and Be Somebody," "Grain of Salt," and "Brand-New Bow" are never less (and little more) than dumb fun, while "Can't Buy You Money" is a clever twist on the "money can't buy you love" adage. The most contentious track here, "Ain't No Right Way," is just waving a red flag at those who refuse to reduce complex issues to simple black-and-white. Keith insists that he only writes as many songs as he needs to record; this time, some quality control might have required writing a few more. --Don McLeese

5 out of 5 stars Another driving TK record   April 11, 2006
43 out of 63 found this review helpful

Toby Keith now has his own record label, a new producer, a new movie--and, obviously, a new batch of songs. WHITE TRASH WITH MONEY is not his best record ever, nor is it quite as enjoyable as its predecessor, HONKYTONK U. Yet, there's no denying that this album will satisfy Toby's legion of fans...and maybe win a few others over to the fold.

The songs on WHITE TRASH fit nicely into the mold Toby has carved for himself. Some songs--especially "A Little Too Late" and "Too Far This Time"--reach into new territory (the strings that keep popping up sound wonderful), but you can tell it's not a whole-hearted effort...just enough to please critics. Fine. I'm not a critic, I'm a TK fan. Thus, I absolutely love the rollickin' "Grain of Salt," the raucous "Get Drunk and Be Somebody," the drivin' "I Ain't Already There" and "Note To Self," and the tender balladry of "Crash Here Tonight." I love the three new "bus songs" (not authentic bus songs, since they were obviously written to be recorded, but whatever), despite the fact that they don't live up to the previous two, or even the rest of the album's tracks. I love the honest (not arrogant) lyrics, the frequent tongue-in-cheek references, and TK's formidable songwriting skills (not to mention those of sidekick Scotty Emerick, himself a talented singer/songwriter). I love WHITE TRASH WITH MONEY because it is pure Toby Keith--honest, true, and most importantly, rockin' country music. With some attitude. And alcohol. And women.

Now, some people are going to hate this album on principle. "Toby Keith," they'll say. "Hate him. Never listened to his music, but I hate it just the same." Well, for those of you who fit into that category...leave. Or buy this ablum and find out what you're missing. Those of us who are die-hard Toby Keith fans don't care. Waylon Jennings was criticized for his brutal honesty...so was Johnny Cash...Willie Nelson...Kris Kristofferson...David Allan Coe...need I go on? Honest music has always been honest music, even when it is commercially aimed, as in Toby Keith's case. Is this the greatest record of all time? Of course not. Is it pretty darn good? You betcha.

1 out of 5 stars What Have You Become?   October 12, 2006

First of all I do think Toby Keith has talent. There are songs from his previous work that I like and prove his skill and talent as a songwriter and musician. With this album I fear that he is continuing a slide into self-parody and risks the possibility that he won't be taken seriously and he will become a caricature. One of the things I have respected about him was that early in his career he had the integrity to be himself and do the music he wanted to and not what the executives in Nashville wanted him to do. That's artistic integrity. But I fear that the niche he carved for himself might turn into a grave for his career. He found his place in country music as the rebellious macho outspoken country boy. But now that has become the formula which sells a product and he seems to be milking that formula for all the profit that its worth But he is losing his soul in the process and becoming at some level the very thing he rebelled against. Now he panders to a certain fan-base and risks encouraging every country/red-neck/hick stereotype, prejudice and cliché that can be so detrimental, divisive and harmful. The testosterone filled music which he helped popularize and is currently being played by artists such as Montgomery-Gentry will run's its course and fizzle in popularity. When that is done will anyone want to listen to Toby Keith anymore? I hope he gets back on track and instead of trying to please a certain demographic for temporary gain he looks within and writes music that has the possibility of becoming timeless.

the large number of 5 star reviews for this piece of flotsam
explains alot about what's wrong with this country.
it explains why george w is president; it explains why are
school system is like 9th in the world; but what it really explains is the large number of morons who inhabit this country.
all of you who gave this waste of cd space a favorable review
all worship at the temple of stupidity. you think "american
idol" is classic television; you think nascar drivers are geniuses because they know that a straight line isn't the shortest distance between two points; you think books are for leveling a couch or a table, or for burning.
i'm by no means a genius, but i'm smart enough to know that
toby keith, or as bill mahar refers to him, koby teeth,
is a talentless redneck, which is redundant. in a smarter world mr. teeth would be cleaning out septic tanks.
btw, amazon, you must allow for a zero star rating; i feel dishonest
    giving this 1 star.

1 out of 5 stars It takes a stupid man to have a stupid fan   May 24, 2006

Proving once again that talent is not a requirement to appeal to the most uneducated, bigotted segment of the country fan base. Ignorant isn't just cool with Keith's fans, it's the standard of achievement - and they're proud of it! YEEEE-ha!
A total loser playing for all the other losers who will pay anything to feel associated with a "Grite Mercan". Little do they suspect that Keith would go brokeback, Dixie Chick or whatever trend he could if it would make him more money.
