Album Description After 2004s showcasing of both his heavy side (Kings And Queens) and his lighter touch (The Ballads III), Axel Rudi Pell is back with guitar shredding vengeance on Mystica! Joined by Johnny Gioeli on vocals, Ferdy Doernberg on keyboards, Mike Terrana on drums and the heaviness of ex-Steeler bandmate, Volker Krawczak on bass, Mystica adds yet another classic to the Axel Rudi Pell legacy.
Album Description 2006 solo album from this German guitar wizard, formerly a member of '80s metallers Steeler. Features the tracks 'Fly To The Moon', 'No Chance To Live', 'Valley Of Sin' and more. Steamhammer.
Album Details Axel Has Been a Firm Fixture in the German Melodic Hard Scene. In the Musical Microcosm Axel Rudi Pell Has Always Had Everything in Its Traditional Place, on the Other Hand He Moves it Continuously. If One Had Supposed that after the Early 90's Albums "Eternal Prisoner" and "Between the Walls" (At that Time with Singer Jeff Scott Soto) that Axel Would have Nothing More to Offer, One Quickly Assured with the Knowledge that Axel Has Always Stood High Level Hard Rock. "Black Moon Pyramid", "Magic", and "Oceans of Time" Cover the Detailed Possibilities of the Genre, Without Crossing the Line, but at the Same Time Remaining Interesting and Entertaining Musically, which is the Trademark of the German / American Band. The Spring Into the New Century was Made Energetically and Easily with "The Masquerade Ball", "Shadowzone" and "Kings and Queens". He's Ready to Rock Again with "Mystica".

Axel should promote himself in the states!!!! October 3, 2006 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
In December of 2005 (Boneyard...yeah!), I bought myself an XM satellite receiver. Soon after, I heard this great song I thought was the Scorpions. To my surprise it was this guy/band called, "Axel Rudi Pell" and the song was "Only the Strong Survive". There was no comparison to Schenker...this was BETTER! I ordered a couple of Axel CD's. (Shadow Zone, Kings and Queens.) They were GREAT! Since then, I have amassed a collection of 11 CD's and 1 Live DVD (Knight Treasures...highly recommend) and not a dud in the whole lot. I never thought that Axel could beat his 2004 release of "Kings and Queens". I was proven wrong! This is his greatest work of all. The older he gets, the better and more mature his music gets and so does his composing/song writing. Hey, and I'm 50! But,if you enjoy some good melodic rock, guitar wizardry, with a great supporting cast, this is the band for you. Mike Terrana (drummer), he is awesone. Johnny Gioeli...what I can say for his vocals and Volker, Ferdy. When I share these works with my friends, they wonder why they never heard of them. I wonder the same. Please Axel, promote yourself more in the states. Maybe a tour?
Axel has, in my opinion surpassed his mentors/heroes...Blackmore, Schenker brothers, Deep Purple, Dio, etc. (I know, blasphemy to some) Give Axel a listen. You won't be sorry if you like true MELODIC GUITAR ROCK. Exellent production, riffs, shredding, vocals, drums, composing. OK, I'll shut up. 3 Thumbs up!
An Arizona Axel fan, Dave
"Dreams turned to nightmares and Heaven turned to Hell" July 31, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Fans of Melodic Metal will rejoice when confronted with the incredibly solid musicianship and excellent production value found on this release. But be warned...(pause for dramatic effect)...many of the lyrics are horrible! I was actually laughing at times. Now I don't mind the occasional cheesy lyric, but this album gets downright embarassing at times. Other than the title of my review, taken directly from "The Curse of the Damned" and is completely cliche'd garbage, here are a few examples:
The chorus from "Rock the Nation": "We are a wild creation/and we will rock this town/We gonna rock the nation/so shout it out loud" (yikes!)
The second verse from "The Curse of the Damned": "We sailed across the seven seas, lighting candles in the wind/Moving on to the midnight sun, rising up again/The twisting and swirling, we're losing ground, running out of time/The execution of your mind sent shivers down your spine" ('snicker', as the final line is most appropriate)
The first line from "Losing the Game" (prepare yourself for this one): "Running and hiding, out on the run/Fast as an arrow or a firing gun" (whew!)
I am saddened by all the poor lyrics amidst such strong performances by a very solid band. But if you can handle "Rock the Nation" in all its cheesy glory then the rest of the album will be easy to digest. For myself, all this cheese makes me a bit constipated. What a disappointment. Hire a lyricist already!
Axel keeps the fire burning.... October 7, 2006 I have to say that I am amazed that Axel Rudi Pell still continues to make great music & like the reviewer before me says....he's better with age! Seriously, Axel shows no signs of slowing down! He's pretty much stayed true to his musical formula throughout his career & even though each album is predictable, it's good to know that you can count on a great album & it will be worth it. This could be his finest work in years...truly power/progressive metal in it's finest.
Great Album October 13, 2006 This is an album equal to Kings And Queens. The title song Mystica and The Curse Of The Damned being the two best songs. All Axel Rudi Pell albums are very good. And this one is one of the best. I wish more people would have heard of this guy. The only way I heard him was on the DIO tribute album. After that I started buying A.R.P. CD's.
Oceans Of Time II November 5, 2006 Synopsis: Mix between Oceans of Time and Kings & Queens with touches of Shadow Zone.
Like clockwork, Axel Rudi Pell releases a new studio album every two years, and 2006 was no exception. Does this album stack up properly and meet the requirements of being a proper ARP album?
Atmospheric intro - Check Several great up-tempo rock songs - Check Required tear jerking power ballad - Check An epic-length song or few - Check
All appears to be in order. Just like when buying an Yngwie Malmsteen album, you already know what to expect from a new Axel Rudi Pell album. The formula remains the same, but Axel manages to throw in a few extra spices to keep things interesting without spoiling the recipe.
The Mysterious Return - short, atmospheric piece, a mix between "The Curse Of The Chains" and "The Arrival", however it never quite seems to flush itself out as well as it could have.
Fly To The Moon - A great heavy hitter to start it off, with a wicked solo. Very beginning of piece sounds a little too close to "Nightmare", though, but still one of the best tracks on the album.
Rock The Nation - Another good up-tempo song along the lines of "Nasty Reputation" or "Fool, Fool".
Valley of Sin - Mid-tempo heavy song, sounds like it would have fit in well on the Shadow Zone album.
Living A Lie - A close cousin to "Only The Strong" from the "Kings & Queens" album.
No Chance To Live - A song about the abuse of animal laboratory testing, very emotional and some of the most powerful lyrics on any ARP album.
Mystica - The requisite power epic song, and my favorite song on this album.
Haunted Castle Serenade - It's been a number of years since we've heard a song like this from Axel. Similar to the previous two Opus songs from Oceans Of Time and Black Moon Pyramid as classically-influenced instrumentals.
Losing The Game - Another good mid-tempo song that could have been on Oceans of Time - a cross between Ride the Rainbow and Living On The Wildside.
The Curse of the Damned - This is the sleeper hit on this album, which features some slow, but heavy rhythms, but speeds up into some ferocious keyboard and guitar dueling, a la Ashes From The Oath.
Any Axel fan should be pleased with this latest addition. While not every song is a 5-star hit, there are several amazing songs, and the album is quite strong.
