Amazon.com With its rich film catalog, Disney has a natural advantage when it comes to expanding into musical theater. But 1999's Tarzan wasn't the very best choice for a stage adaptation. Unlike, say, Beauty and the Beast, whose score was written by show-tune vets, Tarzan was associated with a musical-theater newbie, Phil Collins, who expanded his original score for the show, writing nine new numbers in addition to the five from the movie. But while he does come up with agreeable pop melodies (as, for instance, the hit "You'll Be in My Heart" and the new "Waiting for This Moment" and "For the First Time"), his greenness shows in the lyrics, which tend to spell things out way too much ("In learning you will teach/And in teaching you will learn," etc.) This CD certainly is kid-friendly, but unlike the best Disney material, it lacks that extra layer that would entice adults as well. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Some high points, many low ones... June 28, 2006 24 out of 30 found this review helpful
First of all, I have to say that I love the movie soundtrack. Ironically, the movie songs here are by far the best ones. And, surprisingly enough, Tarzan's singing (Josh Strickland) is the strongest. Kerchak's (sp?) voice is plain annoying and Jane sounds like a past-her-prime Julie Andrews. Frankly, I'm disappointed with the voices of the cast.
Awful November 18, 2006 11 out of 22 found this review helpful
Phil Collins has written a banal, stupid, unmemorable, often uneven score for this Disney dreck musical, Tarzan. His lyrics do not rhyme at all. They often try, but do not work. His music is bland and highly unmemorable. The actor playing Tarzan, Josh Strickland sounds like Cher and Jenn Gambatesse as Jane needs to work on her English accent. The orchestrations sound incredibly synthesized. Nothing acoustical, nothing brassy, nothing remotely good. (Poor work by a usually wonderful Doug Besterman). The show itself is far worse than this CD. The costumes and scenic production are incredibly tacky and lame looking. The book is highly cliched and structured quite poorly. This is a cast album filled with awful music from an awful show. If you wish to hear unmemorable music, bad performers and dreadful lyrics, buy this album. If not, please do not. You won't regret it.
TARZAN-KING OF THE BALLADEERS June 28, 2006 10 out of 15 found this review helpful
The score for "Tarzan" has some good songs but..... The real problem is the inconsistency as the music has no flow and is all over the map. A ballad here, a peppy song there, and a lot of rock everywhere-and even a touch of Jamaican calypso, although I can understand why since Tarzans' hair-do makes him look Rastafarian. There is even a number called "Trashin' the Camp" which sounds like Cab Calloway Hi-De-Ho-ing at the Cotton Club. Another problem is 90 percent of the songs are so generically pop they could be sung outside of the show without any obvious connection to "Tarzan-the Broadway Musical". The songs range from fair to good to great but Phil Collins as talented as he is has much to learn about constructing a score for a Broadway show.
There are two stand-out numbers "For The First Time" and "Everything I Am" These songs are gorgeous but Tarzan-"Lord of the Apes" singing Broadway-like power ballads?
"Everything I Am" as good as it is is burdened by a ridiculous book-scene as it is at this moment that Tarzan realizes his mother was human and not a monkey.
This Cd is worth listening to despite the fact that muscular, jungle-raised Tarzan-defender of his family of apes-conquerer of killer leopards with his bare hands, sings in a voice less than masculine.
I just don't understand.. July 7, 2006 9 out of 11 found this review helpful
I just don't understand why this show got so many bad reviews... I went in NY to see it with my 12 years old daughter, and we loved it! And we are not alone, for sure. The theater was full and everybody there had obviously a great time.Every songs got their strong applause! Standing ovation with a long and strong applause at the end! It was a amazing beautiful and touching show. The songs are just perfect and so brilliantly written by Phil Collins. We bought the cd as well and we just love it.
Tarzan - The Broadway Musical July 9, 2006 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
I went to go see the show in NYC and i thought it was amazing however i thought that after the first couple of scenes that were a bit slow i thought that the remainer of the show was wonderful. Josh Strickland has a great as Tarzan and other supporting characters had pretty good voices as well. Overall, after listening to the soundtrack i feel that i would enjoy the show so much more because the show is very fun and entertaining and although some people feel that the singing is bad or weak i thought that musically the show was awesome. Chester Gregory II stole the show with his songs and was also very entertaining. Don't let anyone tell you that this show isn't worth seeing because it is very good and is a great show for the whole. I want to see the show again. It is worth the support of viewer. Go see it and make a choice for yourself. As an actor i can enjoy it, others should be able to as well.
