    Editorial Reviews:

    Amazon.com
Reality show star, amateur porn hobbyist and regular party fixture; hotel heiress Paris Hilton has decided she would also like to try her hand at being a pop singer. Just because you suspect she hasn't had any formal musical training, never paid dues by belting her heart out with the Mickey Mouse Club, or that she quite possibly bought her way into this whole racket on an expensive whim shouldn't stop you from spending a few frothy minutes with her opening shot, Paris. The single "Stars Are Blind" has a nice breezy faux-reggae vibe, producer Scott Storch sprinkles several tracks with his billion-dollar beats and there's even a tuneless version of "Do Ya Think of Sexy" that actually makes the original sound good. Pulling that off takes some talent, right? - Aidin Vaziri

1 out of 5 stars a perfect representation of the current state of music   August 24, 2006

Something interesting I've been noticing is that many people (some of my friends included) are saying that they are surprised by how much they like Paris Hilton's new single. You shouldn't be. Someone with her infinite wealth can easily afford to hire the right team to make her album as addictive as possible. This is the same tactic that allowed Britney Spears to achieve huge success so quickly. She had powerhouse producers behind her to make her music extremely infectious, causing just about anybody who didn't know any better to think to themself, "Wow! This girl's a great artist!" No. There's a difference between being a great artist and someone with the right team of producers working on their side.

This music is addictive because of its simplicity. Simple tunes are easier to hum/sing/remember, which is very appealing to some people. They contain "safe" harmonic and melodic structures where scale degrees and chords proceed to predictable locations, which are very immediately pleasing to the ear, yet not very rewarding (especially in the long-run). Paris' music is just that: predictable melodic/hamonic structure, geared toward making people think that she is actually a surprisingly valid artist, when she's actually deceiving them so that she can gain even more fame and fortune. How predictable...like her music.

On top of it all, there's a magical device that the music industry has tried to keep hush-hush over the years, but is now becoming common knowledge to the public. Referred to by producing veteran, DJ Premiere, in the video that accomopanies Christina Aguilera's new Back to Basics album as "auto-tune", this aweful technology allows producers to adjust the pitch of someone's voice after it's been recorded. Wonderful. At least before, people with minimal talent had to re-record over and over until they got it right, hopefully learning a little bit about relative pitch in the process and forcing them to slowly learn how to sing in the process. Obviously, Paris has used this. Her "interpretation" of the melody in this song is so terrible that she obviously has had little or no vocal training, and thus, has no more of a concept of relative pitch than anybody else in the country.

Paris said in an on-set interview for her video that she does not want people to think that she is just making an album just to do it, but that she has dreamed of making one since she was very young. Well guess what, Paris? Just because you want to make an album doesn't mean you should. Leave that to the dedicated, intelligent musicians of substance like Sheryl Crow, U2, Alicia Keys, and OutKast. Go take some music theory courses and intensive voice lessons and study some of the music that came out before you were born. Read some good literature. Exercise your mind. Then maybe, even you can release a respectable album.

1 out of 5 stars Worst album I've heard all year   August 24, 2006

Paris Hilton's CD is less of a record than a digital creation. She may have hired big-time producers, but even they can't make Paris sound good. And I felt that the producers wasted any little bit of pop potential that these songs had, as the record sounds fake and joyless. But then, Paris's whole attempt at an album was egotistical. Paris still gets most of the blame here. Her version of "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy" must be one of the worst covers ever. While I'm not a Britney Spears fan, she does have some fun guilty pleasures. No such luck here.

1 out of 5 stars A reflection of my generation.   September 4, 2006

Twenty years ago, 2 years before my birth, no label would have signed a "singer" like this. It is just trendy basically. It also shows you the horror that is the music buisness. Not only that they could sign a horrific atrocity like this, but that people are so desperate to make money that they would overlook talented unsigned bands for this trash. Now, I won't push the music I do love on you the reviewer, like most would (including myself) because no matter what you like, rock, jazz, blues, REAL rap, metal, folk, whatever. You will understand where I am coming from. Music is about passion and talent. The only thing paris has a passion for is money and her only talent is spending it. Don't support this. Support real music.

1 out of 5 stars What kind of world do YOU want to live in?   August 24, 2006

There are millions of songs out there, hundreds of thousands of musicians working hard everyday on their craft, working to make the sounds in their souls come to fruition through audible music, this person is not one of them. She is an heiress and has never had to work a day in her life, it has all been handed to her on a silver platter and yet we are buying her CD? What for, to promote this selfish behaivior, to promote these values and ideals? What kind of kids do you want, what kind of a people are we?

1 out of 5 stars Unfortunately, it seems like we'll always have Paris...   August 24, 2006

It seems to me that all of the reviewers here fall into one of three camps: The "I hate Paris Hilton" camp, the "I worship the ground Paris Hilton walks on" camp, or the most prevalent of the three here on Amazon, "Paris Hilton isn't bad, give her a chance". It shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone who has read my reviews to know that I proudly throw my hat in with the first group.

To the second group: I don't understand why you idolize someone like Paris Hilton who is a horrible role model. She spreads her legs for someone different every night, always parties till the sun comes up, is very self-serving, has had everything handed to her on a silver platter (including her recording deal), and thinks she's the greatest thing since sliced bread. You people call her "hot", but that is a purely subjective term, one that I totally disagree with. All she has done during her time in the spotlight is start the irritating trend of carrying a chihuahua around in a purse and repeatedly using the phrase "That's Hot". She has contributed absolutely nothing of any worth to society and clearly cares about no one other than herself, and you should not be rewarding her for this. Ignore the people that the media puts on a pedestal, and learn to think for yourselves.

To the third group: Why should we give Paris Hilton a chance? She hasn't had to work for a thing in her life, and that includes this recording contract. Musicians and singers usually have to toil for years on the road working at their craft, and either self-release or independently release their recordings before they get a shot at mainstream success. I doubt Paris Hilton has even performed at a karaoke bar. Even if she did, the crowd would have jeered her out of the joint unless they were too inebriated to know what they were hearing. Even with all the advantages she has had, she played it safe and recorded a bubblegum pop album. Yes, maybe it's no worse than Ashlee Simpson, Hilary Duff or Britney Spears, but it's still part of the worst genre of music out there. I guarantee you that no one will be listening to this in a year or two, except for the cultish Paris Hilton followers addressed in the last paragraph. This type of music always has a brief shelf life, and people will only be purchasing it for the curiosity factor, not because they expect to hear good music. Only people with disposible incomes (much like Paris herself) will waste their money on this waste of space.

The album: Surprise, surprise - it's the most lifeless, vapid, shallow pop garbage out there. Some might commend her for making an album that sounds like Britney Spears and the Simpson Sisters - others will realize that the only reason these people are stars is because they're photogenic. The music is completely synthesized, the voices are all kept in tune with vocal correction technology (there's a good reason why these people don't sing live most of the time), and the lyrics are utterly devoid of any wit or imagination. Paris Hilton's album is pure product that shouldn't be listened to by anyone: Either you are old enough to know better than to support this rubbish, or you're too young to be following the example of this spoiled trollop.

In summary: Easily a front-runner for Worst Album of 2006. If you must hear this album, then you must be a masochist ... either download it for free or wait a year or two when it takes its deserving place in the bargain bin next to all those Brian Austin Green and MC Skat Kat CDs. Paris is truly an audio atrocity for which there is no parallel. It's terrible pop music made worse by Paris Hilton's tone-deaf warbling and childish, self-congratulatory lyrics. If we ignore lame hacks like this, that will open the doors for the true talents that have struggled for years to get noticed. Don't waste your money or your time.
